All the points are valid for long distance travelling. Am 64 yrs and drove around 6 lac kms so far.Add few more tips- a) start at 5 am after getting ready and bath is must to remain fresh and finish latest by 10 pm for safety reasons b) do not consume hard drinks before night of journey or during it c ) cotton rope of around 10 mts length must be kept with stepney as in case towing is required - how you will tie up d ) tyres and stepney must be in good condition- NSD ( non skin depth ) of tread must be more than 3 mm in all tyres as it is top safety feature e) if you are tired nothing can stop sleep and human beings take quick nap of 2/ 3 seconds and if driving at 80 km/ hr distance of 44 mts will be covered in 2 seconds, any thing can happen. So, this is most important safety aspect and driver must stop and take nap of 20 to 30 mts f ) recommended inflation pressure in all tyres including spare tyre to be kept before starting journey, do not use local garages for it and stick to fuel stations , it will make your ride comfortable as high inflation pressure makes ride bumpy g ) never keep cold drink / water bottle or similar objects below driver seat as during emergency braking such items quickly roll over below ABC pedals and can cause serious hazard h ) needless to say about use of seat belts including rear seat occupants- life of Lady Dyna could have been saved if she would have wore it i) cruise control reduces fatigue considerably and must be used j ) best speed is 80 to 100 km/ hr depending on road condition, weather, condition of car, highway speed limit , fuel economy, travel time and control on car. Do not tempt to overtake speedy cars crossing you as it is dangerous to race as it increases blood flow in the body and mistakes can happen

Just a tip: plan to service car a week before and not a day before, as in service there could be some mechanical error done by service people and that could lead to breakdown. If serviced few days before there is every chance the issue could popup in ur regular usage and you get it rectified before the travel.... and I had this experience

I would like to add a couple of points as per my comfort: A) Avoid socks and shoes and slippers, instead put up comfortable sandalas to have a ventilation for feets. B) dont keep AC direction directly on your face, it makes you thirsty very frequently, it dries your eye pupils. C) when you take a brake in the journey, do some ankle and shoulder relaxation exercise. D) When you are driving in first lane i.e. close to road divider, as much as possible avoid to tail gate to a big truck or bus with a close distance, i would prefer to keep a distance at least two cars in between. The reason is because to have a good response time to avoid surprise pathholes on the road which the truck/bus ahead of you have already avoided or digested but its a dangerous for you to maneuver your small car to avoid it being in first lane.
Most important always try to give way to speeding vehicles without any ego or anger. There is all possibility that the speeding vehicle may be in need or hurry to reach its destination or otherwise as well let him enjoy speed dont be a roadblock to him/her.

For Point D, 2 Second Rule to be followed on highways- let vehicle in front of you to cross any pole fitted on left side of highway and then immediately you start counting One Thousand One and One Thousand Two ( it takes two seconds ) and then check if your car reaches the same pole after finish of counting. If you reach at correct time then proper distance is being maintained by you for safety. If you cross the pole , it means you are fast and slow down and keep proper distance. If you cross pole late then also it is safe.

Good tips. I have similar experience as yours. Driven 4.5L kms over a span of 22 years. I have some additions to this wonderful list. 1. This is to your point 2. Never service your vehicle right before a journey. But do it a few days before. Reason is sometimes the mechanics change something which could alter something very dynamically. Like getting wheels aligned sometimes they dont do a good job and you will end up with a vehicle pulling all over. Do it in anticipation of the trip but never on the previous day. Get used to the vehicle with new parts and servicing ensure its ok then take. 2. Have a navigator. Suring long trips my wife sits next to me and NEVER sleeps. Keeps talking looks out overtakes for me if i have no visibility etc. This makes the drive pleasurable and also less stressful and safe. 4 eyes are better than 2. 3. Never sleep next to the driver. 4. When too tired its good to stop. But instead of walking up and down and washing face just push back the seat and have a power nap of 15 to 20 mins. This does wonders. Happy motoring.

Dear Jayeshji, consistency comes with experience. A good driver will always maintain a contant speed and driving in lane. One will be relaxed due to these two attributes. In India, 4 road accidents happen in a minute in which one person dies. So in an hour, 60 persons die and now multiply it by 24 and then by 365 days and you get figure for a year. Staying safe on road is top priority rather in how much less time one has covered the journey. All Mini - Alto, Santro, Go,i10, Tiago etc and Compact- Swift, i 20, Polo etc are not meant to drive at 120 km/hr and beyond. See on Yamuna Expressway ( Noida - Agra ) and Lucknow Agra Express way the speed of this category of cars ? Most of them are used to drive intra city and inter city at times and when they get chance to drive on these express ways, attaining high speed remains only motto. Now they are not aware about condition of tyres( even one weak tyre can blow out on concrete highway in summer ), brakes ( weak brake can not controll the car and absence of ABS makes it more vulnerable ) and how wind velocity at high speeds changes stability of a small car on such expressways ? So unknowingly following Mid Size SUVs / SUVs or Sedans on such routes results into severe accidents. One should know the limit of a car ? We lock our homes every day but lock a thief is unable to break once in life time serves the purpose. Similarly, safe driving habits are must and it comes handy when required the most. It is more pertinent as in India getting a DL with out obtaining any formal training is way of life. Driving an Alto and a Bolero or wide body Mecedes needs different skill sets but in our country no provision to upgrade DL is there. That is why driving at safe speed is prerequisite. Trust you will respond to it.

Also try to lift small weights. All family members should get up and freshen-up by 4am; Driver should be last to wakeup and freshenup. Start your trip latest by 4.30am & escape city traffic. On such journey one should be responsible on the road and no need to rush.

Valuable tips. Nice info. Just one concern, starting a journey at 2-3 am is a bit cautious approach as you actually drive in the mid of WOCL (window of circadian low). You may be rested good but can't be sure about other drivers, especially on two-way roads So I try to start the journey around 4:00-4:30 am. But it may work for an experienced driver like you...
Though you travel with co-passengers (maybe family and friends), please make a video for tips on driving long distances ALONE. Sometimes we require to travel really long stretches without any co-passengers. A lonely trip of 500 km is actually equivalent to 800 km (if not more) of traveling with co-passengers...

I eco your thoughts and experience when we drove from
    Delhi->Nagpur->Chennai->Kanyakumari->Kerala->Goa->Mumbai-> Rajasthan->Delhi
The trip was entirely an amazing experience. There were two cars - Maruti Brezza and Tata Nexon. We ensured to start the journey as early possible and reach the resting destination before it's late. The idea is very clear the more you are cautious about your vehicle and your driving the more it will be safe for you and the family. We need to be very sure and careful because it is not only who is on the road but it they may be people who may not be very confident in driving. So we need to keep your eyes open because an accident may be averted due to assertiveness.
We always chalk out plan, stuff snacks and eatables, co-navigator, safety gears and services vehicles.
Wishing everyone a safe and enjoyable journeys!

1What is your opinion on age and long distance driving. I have entered my 70th year and still want to drive myself for long distances. So far I have not faced any major problems while driving. In fact when I retired at the age of 62, I drove all the way from Nagpur to Ahmedabad. I started at 4:30 am and reached Ahmedabad at 11: 30 pm that is 19 hours of driving with some stops. There was four lane between Nagpur and Amravati, then from Amravati to Gujarat border the NH 6 was basically two lane and then from Gujarat border to Ahmedabad it was again four lane. You suggest use of GPS or google maps. I have found that as far as highways are concerned google maps is very accurate but when we have to maneavour in villages or towns or cities or when we have to navigate on state highways or district roads or link roads, it gives very confusing directions leading to wrong destinations many a times. Your video was very informative and I will definitely now be more strict with the points mentioned.

Many years ago there was a Himachal roadways bus travelling up to Simla.Enroute on the hills the driver who had had very little rest was falling asleep at the wheel and requested the passengers that he would like to stop for a 15 minute nap. They refused to allow him the break. A short while later the bus went over the side killing most of them…..

    100% Agree on Point No-7
if you drive 120 km/h + for a long journey then you will get tired. High speed need more attention

Drive at night only if you are comfortable being awake whole night. It takes a lot of stamina and energy and rest to ensure you are attentive in night and also safety can be concerning on lonely stretches at night. If u can manage all that, then the plan is OK..

      Online bookings ...जायदातर make my trip या go ibibo से।

Every point is very relevant. When travelling solo it’s even more relevant. I’d also like to highlight the state of road hypnosis- something even i experienced after driving nonstop for almost 6 hours. Stopped for a while drank water washed face then started off again.

All true that’s how long drives should be done. One point nobody has written, never overtake without a clear vision ahead and always keep some distance between your vehicle and the vehicle ahead, for the emergency brake

I usually do long road trips with my kid and wife, the longest distance I have covered in a day 1700 miles. Few of stuffs I want to add that try to utilize night time maximum, something like start at 9:00 -10:00 PM and drive whole night all other people except driver will feel less stress. Do not eat fried snacks or heavy meals it may cause gas as you will awake at night and remain seated for long time. Do not stop your car at place for tea/food where you do not see few people (security reason). Keep comforter and pillow in car and other than dedicated seat try to have atleast one person less than seat capacity ( like max 2 people in back seat). While people are slipping at night make sure everyone put on seat belts even people at back seat. Carry full spare wheel if your car doesn't come with one get one. Don't get engaged in argument with anyone on road during break, for any concern contact local authorities. Most important thing if you feel sleepy stop at hotel if hotel is not available near by stop the car at side/ rest area / in parking let it run and take a nape for couple of hours but do not get out of car, leave doors open or sleep in turned off car.
