My country was colonised by missionaries. The reason why I am no longer a Christian is because, I am an adult with my own mind and researching and understanding history has made me leave Christianity. Besides finding out about all the fake and plagiarised stories in the Bible, the fact that missionaries colonised my country is enough for me. Coming from Southern Africa, we have different cultural practices, my father’s family has maintained our original culture of communicating with our ancestors. My mother’s family are Christians when things are well but when things aren’t going well, they visit traditional healers and Sangomas. Most Christians do the same. Africans have absolutely nothing to do with Christianity, my culture is totally different from my husband’s but we’re from the same country. The Bible demonised our culture and spirituality because the learnt from the slaves how dangerous our spirituality is for them and sadly, most of us are lost now in Christianity.

(I'm a German atheist. I thought about your post, wrote my thoughts down, and ended up with a big wall of text. Sorry for that. Nobody needs to read it, but perhaps some people find it interesting.)
All religions are lies. The only important question is, what is the harm done by a specific religion, and what are the benefits.
Christianity, like Judaism before it and Islam after it, was invented as a political technology to influence the population of a country. (The same was true for the state religions of Rome and of the ancient Greek republics, which were polytheistic, and for many other monotheistic, polytheistic and atheistic religions.) As such it can have very beneficial effects, but if it is abused or perverted, it becomes very harmful.
The Romans were very impressed by the Jews because they were so fanatical that untrained normal Jews destroyed entire legions. To the Romans this meant that the Jewish religion was superior. If they could have a religion like this for their legionnaires, they would be unbeatable! This is why the Romans were so involved in the creation of Christianity. They wanted a religion with the advantages (in their eyes) of Judaism, but except without circumcision (which the Romans would never have done!) and so that you can eat and wear whatever you want.
Perhaps the greatest achievement of Christianity in Europe is invisible today. Have you heard of any tribes in Germany? Or in France? Or anywhere else in Europe? Probably not, because they no longer exist. Although we speak different languages in different countries and have slightly different cultures, we are all one big tribe, the tribe of Europeans. Christianity did this with two things: 1. It told people that they are all brothers and sisters and should not worry about tribes. 2. For many hundreds of years the church made it illegal to marry someone you were even remotely related to. (If you wanted to do that, you needed permission from the Pope. In practice, only nobility could get that.) That soon made it impossible for everyone to marry inside their tribe, and that destroyed the tribes. Nowadays we don't even remember them. I am sure this contributed to the fact that Europe colonized Africa and not the other way round.
Now let's talk about Ethiopia. Ethiopia became Jewish around the time of the Queen of Sheba and King Solomon, and later it became one of the first Christian regions in the world. According to Acts 8, Philipp converted a high official of the Ethiopian queen of the time who was returning from a pilgrimage to Jerusalem. The Kingdom of Aksum (in today's Ethiopia and Eritrea) even became the first country in the world that made Christianity its state religion, a few decades before the Roman Empire did the same.
There are still tribes in Ethiopia. That's because they had their own church, which didn't outlaw marriages between relatives; or at least not as strictly. But they still got a degree of national unity, and they got the fanatical fighting power that comes with monotheistic religions. Today with the fact that the Europeans found it hard to justify massacring fellow Christians in the same way as they did with people they could denigrate as 'savages', this was enough to protect Ethiopia from attempts to colonize it.
In Ethiopia and Eritrea you can see a genuinely African form of Christianity that has evolved over 2000 years with only a little bit of contact with European Christianity. As a European atheist, I watch videos from Ethiopia with wonder, as I see a form of Christianity there that combines African aesthetics and African music with the relaxed form of Christianity that is normal in Europe as well. I believe that's a good model of Christianity for the rest of Africa as well.
Unfortunately, the relaxed Christians tend not to become missionaries, and if they do they seem to be less influential. The most successful missionaries are the scammers and the nutcases that are as mad as Paul was and convert people with miracles and similar stuff. The most extreme Evangelicals from places like the US and the Philippines, or homegrown in Africa. Perhaps that's inevitable and a country cannot become Christian without going through such a phase; I don't know.
Much the same things can be said about Islam. Once it has calmed down, as it has in Turkey, for example, it's actually not so bad as a political tool.
I get your point about Christianity having demonized your people's culture. But don't think that's a uniquely African problem. Exactly the same happened in Europe, in a process that started about 1600 years ago and ended about 1000 years ago. One country after another was converted by Christian missionaries and the old polytheistic religion made illegal. The old religions left some traces in Christianity overall, and in some local customs, but we have mostly forgotten all about it. Almost nothing was written down about it, and there isn't a lot of archeological finds that would help us to reconstruct it. By the way, some of the old gods were turned into saints of the Catholic church! (That was probably one of the reasons why Martin Luther didn't like the saints.) A lot of pre-Christian religious practices in Europe survived for centuries, disguised as something Christian.
Christianization is a pity, but it's also a chance for a new form of unity.
The natural course of things is that the location of power concentration moves over the globe. The US is in a serious decline, and has been for a while. Europe is also beginning to decline. Asia has started rising a while ago, and now Africa has started as well. Soon China will play the role that the US plays today, and I guess Africa will be like Europe today. At some point, the main power will be in Africa, and Europe, with all its great past, will consist of insignificant vassal states. Monotheistic religions will likely contribute to this. Although they could turn out to be an obstacle if Africa's split between Christianity and Islam is not resolved well. Maybe they will both relax to the point that everyone agrees there is no big difference. Maybe a new religion will arise that unifies them; or an existing one that does this, such as Bahá'í, suddenly spreads like mad and takes over all of Africa.
You say your culture and your husband's are totally different. Think about it: Would you have married if Christianity hadn't already shifted people's attitudes to the point where this was possible? (Maybe the answer is Yes. Obviously I don't know enough about your cultures and their histories to know this.)
In any case, much more important than any individual religion or tradition is national unity and solidarity, and then also pan-African unity and solidarity. This doesn't necessarily mean people have to marry across tribal boundaries. Variety of cultures means that many cultural experiments can take place at the same time and everyone can learn from the results. But it's difficult to avoid factionalism if different tribes have different religions.

Yeah, Oshay went Full Jordan Peterson and all his arguments were what ifs with no solid answers one way or another. His plane analogy was a strawman because man invented planes nor did they exist at the time of his answer. Oxygen exist but was not recognized as oxygen. You could say wind exist because you experience it, but not say oxygen because it was not recognized as oxygen in his example. God would have to follow the same logic. You can't say it exist unless you experience or able to point to evidence of it's existence. This is the fallacy of faith powered by emotions. You will defend it despite not being able to point to evidence. I know I butchered my arguments as they require more discussion than a bunch of run on sentences. 🙃
Edit: Around the 57 min mark Oshay starts talking about benefits of religious community and lack of beneficial atheist community. The Church of Satan is a civil rights organization that welcomes all beliefs and actively help people find resources to various social and economical problems. Of course the name is a dig at religion.

Most of our peoples are under Religious Delusions The prevalence of the biopsychosocial model in psychiatry highlights the importance of investigating the clinical significance of religiosity in patients with psychotic disorders. Due to the spiritual and supernatural nature of religious beliefs, distinguishing them from religious delusions is a challenging endeavor. The self-referential nature of the beliefs, the presence of concomitant psychiatric symptomatology and the effect on functionality seem to play a key role in differential diagnosis. Religious psychotic symptoms are common in clinical practice. The study of these symptoms often becomes difficult due to varying definitions, the fluctuation they present over time and space and the strong influences of the social and cultural environment on them. There seems to be a positive correlation between religiosity and the occurrence of religious delusions in psychotic patients, but it is not clear that this indicates a causal relationship. The content of religious delusions seems to be significantly influenced by the immediate social environment rather than cultural background of the individual, as well as by the beliefs and attitudes of the patient's family environment. Religious delusions are characterized by increased conviction and pervasiveness, permeating to a greater extent the individual's whole experience. Their presence is associated with more severe symptoms, higher medication dosage, and poorer prognosis. The increased severity of psychosis with religious content symptomatology seems to be associated with Religious delusions some time. You need to listen, the brother never said he dont believe in god. Faith is the substance of a mere belief which can be attributed to anything. A thing occurring or being perceived doesn't give credence to a god or any other unseen "power." Those who have only a mere surface understanding of any belief system and it's actual origin have no idea what they "believe" in and whether or not it has viable legitimacy. Those who have the beliefs, language, and culture of their colonizer are unfortunately misguided, foolish, and will without question will obey their masters methodology of control. How can one serve the same god that favor one people over the other and justify this. Those who have adopted this thinking are still the slaves of their colonizer in their mind, body, and spirit. "Believers" will always use short scripture they memorize to even justify their plight at the hands of their colonizer/god due to training and conditioning by their own leaders put in place by their colonizer. Believers are taught that even if their life is terrible, if faithful to their colonizer god they will go to heaven. Foolishness. Answered prayer is nothing more than a matter of luck or chance. Nothing more. If Two people standing next to one another and the believer suddenly died, other believers will say it was just his time. If he lives and the other dies, the believers will thank god for living and not being the sinner that died. The concept of "god" is not understood at all by a people who does not understand your original concept of creation.

This sure is interesting and controversial conversation, sometimes we forget that Christianity is not an European concept the whole of Europe was at one time worshiping idols and several gods before Christianity came to play and just because Europe colonized Africa and enslaved Africans does not make the essence of the Christ message irrelevant, even those who were the disciples of Jesus did not initially really understand the message until later…so what do you expect from those who are far removed from that moment.
The message of Christ in its Pure Absolute unadulterated approach is not to save the “form” heal it or make it feel better for the world of form itself is a lie a mirage, the message of Christ in its simplicity is to declare oneness with God and to let you know that where you the “form” appear to be is Christ albeit asleep and when you experience HIM from a first person singular perspective all these world views/doubts fall like a pack of cards and you do not cause this to happen for it is the Father through Grace that makes it happen and no matter how big or full of ego that person is, you break down and when this happens you know what or whom you have experienced, go read the experience of Saul to Paul.
Also when you look at some aspects of African Christianity there is no doubt that the old tradition and superstitious beliefs and way of life operate heavily and some leaders capitalize on this fear and vulnerability whether consciously or unconsciously. At the end of the day God is God and is no respecter of persons born in time and space.

Afrikans have held on to these colonial religions for too long. You see many black people even boasting they want to remain in ignorance when you point it out to a lot of them. Try to tell them to go back and learn their history and many will scamper off. But it has to be said whenever the opportunity presents itself because you may sow the seed that'll eventually free one brother or sister from religious psychosis. It is only then we can address a lot of the rot that's crept into our spirituality since the advent of the slave religions in Afrika.

Oshay, the reason why we believe in oxygen and electricity, even if we can't see it, is because we know it affects our lives. Without oxygen, nobody would be able to live. But, there is absolutely no proof of a god other than inside some books. In fact, the first god that people worshiped was the sun. Because since then, people understood that without the sun, nothing can grow. Later on it was the fire, the earth, the air, the water, all four elements essentials for life.

All religions are based on the movement of the heavens and the stars especially and most prominently the sun. Hence sun of god, reverse it. God of sun. Hence most religions repeat the narrative “died on the cross, Resurrected on the third day. This is what the sun does every year. From Mithra to Jesus. Same planetary story mapped out in the heavens. Satan was a comet that fell to the earth causing the great deluge. There have been many.

To understand religion in Africa you must go back in history to the 13th, through 15th century, where the slave trade and conquest of various empires took place. Religion was imposed as an alternative to death and enslavement. The people of the continent were look at as Heathens, their lives were spared by converting to Catholicism or Islam. This adaptation has continued till today.

It's interesting how people talk about rules and order in nature and still believe that people used to live 300, 400, 600 yrs. That people walked on water and returned from the dead, and survived fiery furnaces, and even built boats large enough to hold two of each animal and all the food to feed them. These things go totally against the laws of science and nature which God put in place. They can either believe in God and trust the science and order that God put in place as far as we understand it at this stage, or believe the incredibly impossible fairy tales of religion. That opens the doors for delusion like prosperity preaching, and religious interpretation spin offs.

    • @kaybeeMoAfrika
      @kaybeeMoAfrika Před rokem +1

That's a good question. However, to assume the answer must be God (Jehovah) is a bit far-fetched. The problem with enforcement is that one has to assume that there is a superpower who is actively keeping the order. Which means that the supernatural deity is constantly spinning Earth and other planets to make sure we get the days and nights. It is true that to our eyes everything looks to be in a perfect order, but is it really in a perfect order? We can tell by looking into some of the recent studies that the universe is expanding and we are learning that new planets are being born and dying almost every second. We now understand that everything in the known universe is spinning, which explains why we are in this constant spinning, and we're able to experience days and nights, and seasons as well. So if you're just looking at earth and everything that happens on it and think that that's an order, then your scope of thinking is very limited. There is so much more happening even in our own solar system that our minds cannot fully comprehend. But to assume that this one person / being / god is directing everything is in itself unfortunate and perhaps a bit nonsensical.

Yashuah(Jesus) was and is the only way to the THRONE OF THE FATHER who was sent here to give us this gift. And the JUST SHALL LIVE BY FAITH THROUGH THE ONLY NAME THAT ONE MUST BE SAVED!!! NO OTHER!!!
This Truth is not taught in no other Scriptures except the Bible Text. So blessed to all those who recieve this gift and believe it. and no more shall one live in sin, that the BIble reveal what sin is. too bad most pastors in these churches lie and teach that sin was nailed on the cross with Christ. what a damnable lie. the all lies were taught to avoid clearly in the Bible.
