      I'd recommend learning Photoshop and Illustrator! There are many tutorials on CZcams and Skillshare. Best of luck!

    Hi Lauren, can you give us an insight on the textile design industry right now during COVID? Do you see any slow down in hiring designers, licensing needs, reduction in product design, etc? Do you think home/kitchen accessories design are affected by this? Thank you!

    • @LaurenLesley
      @LaurenLesley  Před 3 lety +1

      Hi there, I don't have access to data or actual numbers around how the textile industry has performed during COVID. My personal experience is that there's less buying / selling, but I think it probably depends on the company. Sorry I can't be more helpful!

    • @annoif8

      @@LaurenLesley Thanks Lauren! You are very helpful. One of your other videos gave me an idea to research on other trade fairs that are in Europe too. Checking them out and seeing what's planned for 2021 gives me hope for the future. You're right, there is less buying/selling now in the midst of the crisis, but I think in some areas and depending on the company, there is an increasing demand for furnishing and decoration, and people are still looking forward to meet new designers, in person interaction during fairs. And when the situation improves, there will be room for the textile industry to restart on a good note.

    Hi Lauren, thank you for these useful tips! Your free workshop link seems to be about finding ones style. Is there another one about how to get into textile design ( i also went to school for graphic design). Did I miss something? thank you!

      Hi there, and thanks for watching! I used to teach a textiles workshop and a longer course, but both are currently closed. I may reopen it in the future so if you'd like to be notified, make sure to join my email list over on my website, LaurenLesley.com. For now, I'm focusing on the style course. ;) Have a wonderful day!

    Hey Lauren, I'm like you, I was a graphic designer... I bought a book to learn more of the printing process etc .. but I saw that some people studying with a textile degree actually makes things on a loom, etc .. how did you get around not having that?

    • @LaurenLesley
      @LaurenLesley  Před 3 lety +2

      Hi Doris! The thing about being a textile designer is you need to understand fibers and constructions, but you really don't need to know how to weave. In a textile design job, designers are not weaving materials themselves - that would be far too time consuming. Instead, they request and receive samples of different constructions and techniques from vendors and go from there. It's the designer's job to piece everything together... A similar analogy would be how an interior decorator doesn't actually design the furniture itself, but she designs the room by choosing pieces that go together. In a similar way, a textile designer chooses the fiber, the construction, the design, the color, and any additional techniques (such as adding fringe or tassels in places). But they do not weave these materials themselves. Let me know if that makes sense! :)

    • @LaurenLesley
      @LaurenLesley  Před 3 lety +2

      My experience in Graphic Design was enough of a foundation for the company to train me on the rest. I first joined a rug company. I was cheap to hire and they were willing to train our design time in rugs since it's a particular product. Again, it wasn't necessary for me to know how to weave, but I did learn the basics of woven, loomed, tufted, machine made, and knotted constructions. I learned the limitations of each construction on the job and I feel lucky in that way. I do teach a course called Textile Star that teaches everything you need to know to get a job in Textile Design. Buying a loom and weaving things yourself isn't a part of the curriculum. ;) let me know if you're interested!

    I have designed tartans for over 10 years. Of the more than 900 tartans I designed, I kept about 60. Should the thread count and color scheme be included in my portfolio?

    • @LaurenLesley
      @LaurenLesley  Před 3 lety +1

      I'm not an expert on tartans, but if you think this information is relevant to the people who are interviewing you then I'd keep it! 👍🏻

    • @johnorr8094
      @johnorr8094 Před 3 lety

      @@LaurenLesley I only started designing tartans 10 years ago. There is a lot that goes into designing a tartan. Every part of a design has a name; like the sett; or the pivot; or the reverse, and repeat etc. But the rules for choosing and arranging colors is universal in design. Your advice on posting a portfolio website is a great idea. I might even publish a complete catalog of my original designs, including the design details.

    Having worked primarily for large corporations, I haven't had to have a physical portfolio since perhaps the '90's! Having a Digital AND PHYSICAL port sounds so absurd to me! Everyone asks for LINKS to you port., they no longer request you SEND it in!! I can't believe any Creative Director asks to see BOTH in this century. Have they not heard of going "PAPERLESS"? Crazy they'd want both, where are these CD's? Thankfully I've never encountered them.

    • @LaurenLesley
      @LaurenLesley  Před rokem

      Haha, I know, I wish we didn’t need a physical portfolio anymore, but I literally showed up to an interview without one thinking my online portfolio should be fine and the Creative Director started printing out my designs on basic white paper during the interview! Needless to say, they did not offer me the job. From then on, I always came prepared with a physical portfolio. It was expected and was always looked through.

    How many portfolio types do you suggest to tailer to specific company styles?

    • @LaurenLesley
      @LaurenLesley  Před 2 lety

      It depends on the type of work you want to do! I would tailor your portfolio to fit the company's product. But having more than 2-3 versions would probably be too much and would probably start to lean towards jobs you don't really want anyway. I hope that helps!
