- Today we have completed the Worlds 1st Mystery Tackle Box SLAM (MTB SLAM) on a fly rod and reel! It took 4 days to complete this fishing challenge, and we caught fish on a crankbait, jerkbait, jig, craws, game changer (streamer), and a fluke. This was one of our hardest fishing endeavors to complete as these baits ARE NOT made for the fly rod, and are designed for conventional fishing gear like a baitcaster. Enjoy!

I use my flyrod with corn for carp so using a MTB isn't that bad. Can't wait to see a crankbait on a flyrod though.

When you cast don't flick at the end. You need slow gentle movement for the most effective cast
Just about nothing applies when throwing these baits compared to flies I’d throw on these same outfits.

Good video. I'm glad you didn't give up. Most people don't know that the fly rod was the only game in town up until about 50 to 75 years ago. In fact the first inline spinner was cast on a fly rod.

Yeah kind of defeats the purpose of a fly rod but this was awesome. Hey nothing like thinking outside of the box!! I think I will stick to fly's on my flyrod though but definitely interesting to watch.

Haha it’s a work in progress. I found out it’s better for me to tuck under my left arm which helps me grab the rod easier once they’re hooked. On that day I threw the lipless you’ll see it’s under the right arm and an awkward transition to grab the reel but on the 3rd day when using the game changer and 8wt I do the left
@@WestinSmith love the double hand. I noticed the tuck on the left side. Try smaller movements with your wrist only, with pauses followed by a single quick snap strip, you should notice the Changer turn and show more profile, that’s when I usually get my big strikes. Great work and I look forward to every new video. BTW… no hate from this fly fisherman for the Slam, now THAT’S innovative content!

I've never heard of Seaborn before. Where are they located here in DFW? I'm on the hunt for a 9' to 10' ft 2 piece in an 8 or 9 wt as my next lake rod. Was going to get a TFO rod but would be happy to support a local company if they have what I'm looking for or for my next fly rod after that.
Also,d that was a sweet video! That was pretty crazy using those heavy conventional hard baits with those rods. Way back in the 30s to 50s before light & ultralight spinning gear was a thing, it wasn't a foreign idea to have hard baits for fly rods that were made for fly fishing. I've acquired more than a few in my vintage tackle collection over the years. Still on the hunt for a Heddon Fly Rod Punkinseed lure that's not over $100 to $150. I swear the smaller an antique lures get the more expensive that it gets. LOL! I should make a video throwing some of it just to piss off both the fly fishing purists & lure collectors at the same time. LOL!

1st time you used conventional baits with the fly rod I was pretty critical. On your last fly rod vid I recommended putting away the 10wt for an 8wt. Being a purist fly guy, I hate to admit I chuckled when I saw the MTB box in your hand. Throwing those hard baits and jigs would have been a lot easier with the 10wt. Looks like the two handed strip worked with the hard baits. With flies, most times a single handed strip will be more productive. The two handed strip works better with larger, faster fish, like tuna and roosters. Search "stripping fingers" for finger protection. My favorite is the Buff brand stripping guards.
As a purist I want to be a hater (but I can't!). Keep it up, and I hope my snobby fly friends can sit back and enjoy your passion.
Haha thanks William, awesome comment! On that two handed strip I plan on only using it with a handful of larger streamers or for different species but it works great with crankbaits 🤣🤣🤣

This was a fun video, but imma just stick to flies on my fly rod. One of my favorite things in fishing is trying random unconventional things because it might work, or it might just be fun, but this is just a touch outside of my comfort zone lol. Keep up the grind and I see no reason why 1M subs can't happen in 2022.

Love these vids....don't let any so called purists talk down to you...fly rods are versatile enough to handle almost any type of lure...and I can guarantee that there has been a lot of experimentation over the decades...so keep it up...any type of spinner or baitcast lure will have a matching fly version if you search for it...but... your way is very entertaining. Anything that encourages others to get outside and enjoy the sport is a win.
