      Within the past year I've been introduced to quality scotches from a group of whiskey/bourbon/scotch enthusiast. Never once has a member brought over a bottle of Macallan to drink for the evening. It seems to controversial brand. Why do you think the quality has gone down? What would be some of your top choices? (Obviously normal choices, not the $500 per bottle stuff. I personally just don't taste/enjoy the differences enough once you get past around $250 IMHO)

    • @DayKlight
      @DayKlight Před 2 lety

      @@springbranch6866 Macallen sadly sells alot with the brand. You should try to go for bottles with atleast 46% abv, no coloring. Yes they might not add coloring, but you can pour fresh sherry into the casks, let them sit some months and then age the whisky in it, it will get color, but not much flavour, compared to a heavy oaky cask or a older sherry cask etc. Maybe the cask got filled the 4th time now, the wood is tired and doesnt give any oils or character. Some good distilleries: Arran, Glencadam, Edradour, the new Glenturret, Glen Scotia, Springbank.... there are plenty, also plenty of sherried options, rich in flavour and texture :)

      You do relize E150 is a completely natural compound right? Its like E300, which is regular ascorbic acid (which we litterly cant live without) but they have to write E300 if it was created in a lab instead of extracted from ex. a fruit. Its still the same exact substance and will have the exact same effect. But in one situation its called E300, and in another ascorbic acid.
      As far as the glass goes you are correct that is a bit of a strange glass choice for a tasting. However, those kind of glasses are in fact the kind that would be the "traditional" whisky glass for consumtion in bars etc. In europe that would be considered a whisky glass. Glencairn and other glasses like it is mostly refered to as a "nosing" glass. And although those are superior for smelling, you can still smell well good in a regular whisky glass aslong as your nose isnt complete shit :P But ofc, a glencairn or similar is superior for smell since it gives you more options so you can more easily detect all there is. While a glass like this will certainly be sufficient as long as you got enough whiskey in it, its not ideal.
