Thank you so much to Rick Beato for having me. A huge honor!
great to see you get the attention - you are an *insanely* good player man
Very technical stuff. Really interesting
@@GaryCainMusic cheers Gary!
You are a cool dude and a fun guitarist to listen to. Keep up the good work. â«âȘâ«
[Rubs his hands together, grinning fiendishly; says "It's ALL going according to plan."]
Thanks for stopping by! Pleasure to have you in the building!
Great building!
Great place to go shopping! I spent 3 hours in there and it felt like 20 minutes
@@Xaion6is the the same place as rays music exchange from the đŹđ blues brothers movie đž
That's awesome I ordered an exclusive Gretsch from you online...very good service... I hope to visit the store one day.
How?! In "When I saw her standing there" he is flying through the bass line and picking out the tune at the same time. Absolutely INCREDIBLE.
Can you paste the timestamp here please?
@@anjishnu181216:00
@@anjishnu1812 15:55 or thereabouts
â@@anjishnu1812 16:07 It is mind-blowing
I wonder if he was channeling the great Laurence Juber for the arrangement.
That man deserves to own that guitar. What a player.
AND a better amplifier..........
Who doesn't love an insanely talented guitarist who is also humble and funny.
When you're THAT good you've got nothing else to prove to anyone. đ
hes not a half bad footballer either if you've seen his instagram!
I don't. _Boring._
yawn! one day he wil have his own music and style, now he is still immature as an actual artists
@@OfficialFatLip Right now he's just someone who has spent a lot of time practicing how to move his fingers fast.
People these days seem to miss the difference between an instrument player (a trade) and a musician (artist). Virtuosos tend to suck at actually _composing_ music.
Rick is slowly becoming Gandalf
Iâm here for it. đ€đ»
Guthrie beat Beato to it
Ha! I thought, "He looks like President Snow from The Hunger Games!" đ
Sure thing he's becoming Gandalf, you sd know what it means in the guitar world ,Rick ain't Rick for nothing he plays extraordinary guitar!!
funnily, the song that Nathaniel plays in the beginning (Led Zeppelin's Ramble on) references The lord of the rings
Rick is a phenominal ambassador on behalf of good music and the vast community of talent that underpins the music industry. Thank you, Rick.
This dude is a true fretboard wizard with real style and flare.
Heâs killinâ that Zeppelin Ramble On
Heard it instantly myself and thought it sounded cool.
Itâs unbelievable. Itâs hard to understand what heâs doing
â@Skwid-Lives Right??? My listening isn't as advanced as his playing.
He's doing what we would all like to do with our favorite riffs. To start with the riff but to go beyond it by playing everyone else's parts too!
Yeah that was awesome! đ€Ż
Never heard of him before watching the video.
However now I understand why EVERYONE is talking about him. That was absolutely awesome. đ
Same here. Incredible!
Then you have to watch him play Kashmir on an acoustic it's incredible
đđ this is a fun comments section
Check out his rooftop funk vid !!!!
There is absolutely nothing gimmicky about anything this man has ever done so he doesnât need to worry! Pure skill, pure class
Waaay too much thought and hours behind his technique to call any of it âgimmickâ!!! His rhythmic bounce reminds me of Chet Atkins, who was often overlooked as a âsquareâ but in fact âgeniusâ
YES mate. So happy you guys got together. Crushed it as always. Off to practice that arpeggio technique...
Youâre an absolute legend too, Mike. Iâve been listening to Boogie Shred for the last 14 years. Even bought it on iTunes ages ago.
Nathaniel and Tommy Emmanuel need to link up. Love hearing the breakdown of the arrangements
Def shades of Tommy Emmanuel
Yes!!!
Exactly!
I came to the comments to see if anyone mentioned Tommy Emmanuel! â€
đđ„
Nathaniel Murphy is a force of nature. I always loved how humour was a big part of so many guitar players back in the 40s and 50s and you donât see that anymore. The only two players I can think of are Nathaniel Murphy and Greg Koch, both play the most absurd things in such a cheeky way that you canât help but laugh.
I agree..he is a modern player but incorporates the fun that Chet Atkins or Les Paul inject into their arrangements.
It's just one piece but listen to McLaughlin and Paco on Friday Night In San Francisco playing and playing with, Short Tales of the Black Forest. It's humor via virtuousity. Always brings a smile.
Guthrie Govan as well
John 5 is quite cheeky and self-aware in his ridiculousness.
Good call.â@@Samasiam
Nathaniel was the reason I flew from Greece to Chicago Music Exchange to buy my 2nd Martin! I love this dude! â€
I LOVE the interaction between Nathaniel's guitar-playing and Rick's remarkable ear, which recognizes every chord variation, specific harmonic shifts, and nuances. I'm in awe of you both.
You can see Ricks expression, he is absolutely blown away by this guy. I never saw Ricks face with such amazement like this.
He's never had Guthrie Govan on yet...just wait đ
â @@anthonyg7181Iâve never seen Guthrie play like this or how Mateo Mancuso plays. Great guitarist but I fail to see how heâs going to blow Rickâs mind more than those guys have.
@@jonherdman6282 in terms of style and uniqueness Guthrie is quite special. Not saying Mateo's isn't but Guthrie is astounding, Rick has mentioned him a few times. There's videos of him playing mind blowing stuff. Not to mention the original comment isn't very factual bc Rick has this same expression with many guitarists honestly. I don't even think he was "blown away" at all. He had more reactions in other interviews like Animals as Leaders and Polyphia. He's always expressive like he was in this one. Guthrie would be no exceptionâïž
Thank you, Rick, for bringing Nathaniel to a broader audience. Don't want to 'lose' our Belmullet-Manchester-Chicago lad, but he deserves this long overdue broader exposure.
I'm blessed to have had Nathaniel as a teacher and a mentor. I have never met someone in the guitar community more humble with more talent. It is so exciting to see him get the recognition in a channel such as this Rick. Amazing stuff!
God this guy makes me wanna cry, equal parts of joy, admiration, and low key jealousy. Such mastery of the instrument. Bravo Sir đđđ
As a Chicago resident and CME frequenter, this is wonderful. Nathaniel is a remarkable MUSICIAN. he is beyond just being a guitarist... but at the same time, his musicianship is inspired by the idiomatic strengths and weaknesses of the guitar. Something to strive for.
Agreed - the cool thing for me is that someone with such advanced, nuanced, unique chops, is often short on the broader musical skills - not dude, not at all. HF.
The combination of skills to do this... Amazing. Knowledge of chord theory. Listening skills. Understanding of fretboard and voicings on guitar. Arranging skills. And being able to actually PLAY the arrangement. Nathaniel is a one in a billion musical mind. Much like Tommy Emmanual, Bela Fleck and a few others.
Nathaniel is just a Natural Phenomenon âïžâïžâïžâïžâïž
Nathaniel is a monster player and the sweetest dude around. Was so lucky to meet him at NAMM 2023 and happened to run into him a few times there, and he was such a nice, down to earth, humble guy. It was such a privilege to see him play and see him get excited about the new equipment and other players. He deserves everything and more. Cheers, mate!
Holy moly ⊠this is what you get when you have 2 complete masters discussing their craft !
My goodness⊠I genuinely canât stop watching Nathaniel play. And⊠he is genuinely one of the nicest people ever. Period.
I met Nathaniel at CME while in Chicago and he was the most down to earth person I ever met. Such a cool dude and awesome player. Excellent interview, Rick.
"I'm not saying that I'm clever"
You dont have to sir we hear you.
Incredible
Dude is always musical first. He always serves the song
For sure! Hes an example for all guitarists bro. Love this lad
God Lord, Nathaniel Murphy is 2 guitarists in one! Wow!
These dudes from Ireland and England continuously and historically show up as innovative and learned virtuoso guitarists
I have had the occasion to meet Nathaniel Murphy after a concert, and have seen him around CME a few times. (I was actually at CME the day of this recording and saw Nathaniel and Rick walking around and talking.) Nathaniel truly is the kind and humble guy he appears to be. Heâs a good dude.
Enthralled for 30 minutes. Don't be so Modest Nat, "gimmicky" my ass! It's no more gimmicky than anything played by anyone ever. You are a Brilliant Player, problem solver, your dedication is unmatched. BRAVO, and thank you for entertaining, teaching, and showing us YOU all these years!!
When he plays those muted arpeggios at around 22 minutes in, he reminds me so much of Les Paul and he plays with the same joy as Les. Brilliant stuff!
Nathaniel is one of the nicest & most humble guests you ever had on the show Rick. I love this man.
Wow this fella is Chet Atkins,Les Paul and ERIC Johnson all in one!!!loved his use of harmonics and chord inversions!
Love watching him play. As a guitar player I can appreciate just how good he is and his unique style. Thank you again Rick for bringing us the best!!!
Great video Rick, as a Chicago native this makes me smile.
Thank you
And given the Bears great picks in this year's draft (Round 1 25 April), Nathaniel should have some great football to watch while practicing his craft. Wow! My next door neighbor in north Idaho came from Chicago, and is a fan of the Cubs and Wrigley Field, too. I became a fan when our local cable company had WGN as its feed in Cordova, AK.
Wow. What an interview. Such a beautiful interaction. Seeing Rick giggling at the absurdity of Nathanielâs playing at the same time as myself. Wonderful â€â€â€
We need more Nathaniel! Pure genius!!!
Great interview Rick! Nathaniel's playing just floors me. He is so humble...nice to see!
Unbelievable playing - Nathaniel you've just become one of my favourite guitar just in one video clip. AMAZING
This episode was so fun to watch! Two awesome musicians chatting and having a good mood. Thank you bothđđ
I found this guy in a video on Rhett's channel playing a Gibson acoustic with a B bender and he blew my mind that day. This is an entire new level of genius
Rick, can we get Nathaniel and Matteo together in your studio for a video? That would be epic.
I've told Nathaniel several times over the years via direct message on Instagram that he makes me want to throw every single bit of my gear in the trash.
What an absolute juggernaut of a player. My favorite pure guitar player hands down
Thank you so much Rick, for that amazing and inpiring interview. It was a lesson in many ways. Not just the guitar playing. Greetings from Villarrica, the south of Chile.
It's amazing to see you on Rick's channel mate. Super proud of you. Always been a phenomenal player. â„
Really nice to see so many young players these days... â€
I love it when guitarists think out of the box and actually use the guitar in totally unique ways.
Yet another great interview with such a fantastic musician and humble guy. I sat and watched/listened with a big smile. đ
Guy won my heart when he busted out âCrazy Little Thingâ, incredible! Great interview
đ¶ First I've heard this approach of "independence of feel" coined by the great solo jazz guitarist, Tuck Andres (of Tuck and Patti and uncle of Berklee alum, Saint Vincent) in the 80s. He also played walking bass in legato, as a bass player would. Then at the same time he played the top note melody, then added staccato comping like a keyboardist, and then a rhythm section percussion on the strings.
So cool how he craves playing. Clearly enjoys what he does, and too humble for how good he is. Really nice dude.
Wow. First time hearing Nathaniel, I love that his biggest goal is to serve the music! Never gimmicky, just whatever it takes to serve the source material. Excellent!
This is spectacular. I've become quite a fan of Rick Beato 'cause I love music. To hear him and a master guitarist discuss music in its complexities and beauties is a real treat.
I met that guy on IG when he was playing Kashmir on guitar, the WHOLE thing. The riff, the percussion, the voice.... i was thunderstruck
Ahhh yes! I knew I'd seen him before.
I saw him on Brett Shull's show. Playing a B bender.
Look for Tory Slusher playing Kashmir, here on YT. It's different that what Nathaniel Murphy does, but also amazing.
Wonder if he could play â Thunderstruck â by AC/DC
It always amazes me how creative people can be about playing guitar, and how many ways you can play itâïž
10:23 "I'm just having fun which is the best way to describe it". That's pure love & truth đ
What another amazing interview. Nathaniel is such an amazing, talented guitarist, and so very humble . Awesome stuff đđ»
This felt like an insane Master Class! Best takeaway- be a problem-solver! Thank you both!!
First Iâve heard or seen of him, and so glad I have.
Nice interview.
I wish this interview went on for hours. I love watching him play, itâs so relaxing yet so entertaining. He seems like such a nice guy too.
Once again, the quality of your channel is beyond the realm of CZcams at this point. Always blessed to watch.
What a way to have fun playing Ramble On. Mahalo for the great video!
Another great interview Rick - first time i've heard/seen Nathaniel, damn the laddie can play! Beautiful arrangements
Nathaniel is the man. Phenomenal player - have followed him for years now and he constantly leaves me shooketh with his incredible arrangements.
You really deserved this Nathaniel. Iâm grateful for the tech bits and your IG channel.
Been seeing a lot of these âso good they make me wanna quit, but canât help become more and more enamoured with musicâ types of players lately. God I hate how good this man is, but I absolutely love it too. Fair play mate. INSANE
This guy is the only reason I still look at Instagram. Incredible player and great interview!
What a lovely interview , I first saw Nathaniel playing â In My Life â my favourite Beatles song by my favourite band , and along with watching the videos of Rick Beato at the age of 60 I have fallen back in love with music and learning to play guitar again , so thank you both very much for your time inspiration and a now happier life đđđ.
Fantastic! He and Tommy Emmanuel in the same room would be insane.
I've been waiting on someone to officially recognize this greatness
I asked my 12yo son to name the Beatles and he said Paul McCartney, John Lennon, Ringo Star and Rick Beato đđ
I hope you said "That's quite the compliment, but All things must pass"...
......nah, he left to start a print music forum, so they got Ringo......
Hari Georgeson is still my favorite đ
đđđ thatâs priceless
Man⊠I love this channel. As a non-guitar player (but music enthusiast) I still find this stuff FASCINATING.
wow this dude is solid... he is playing absolutely clean and just smashing each note and adding accents perfectly as well.. bravo!
I love the joy of his playing.
Nathaniel is one of a kind. And what a kind human being!
Holed up in the basement of Chicago Music Exchange lies this enormous talent!! Great interview, as always Rick you know every right question and share such amazing insights into the various artists.
This is one of Rickâs videos that Iâve went back and watched several times and shared in disbelief! Iâm just gobsmacked by this manâs talent!
Just remember MrB, if you're feeling overawed, you can play the Kid Charlemagne solo to the note âïž and that is impressive
World is not short of amaziiing guitarists, thankfully.
I've been following some of the greats from Segovia to McLaughlin and Paco and Al etc. What is stunning today, are the variations of technique beyond the parameters I've seen. Obviously infinitely more styles actually can be seen very early now. It's new unexpected potential and creativity. Lucky us.
@@Samasiam Truly..how about the new 'crimson line up' vai/belew/levin/carey
Great interview, amazing guitarist Nathaniel. Congratulations both for giving so brilliant stuff
Wonderful interview, what a skilled and nice man he is. Thank you Nathaniel, thank you Rick!
This guy's awesome. At one point he mentioned Joe Pass and I didn't understand why until he played something that sounded just like him. He later on mentioned a "piano-like" style and next thing he played sounded just like Stanley Jordan. He truly is a one-man band.
I love how he layers in the percussive elements
Yet another great video, Rick! Keep up the amazing work!
"It's kind of like what you do without realizing..." Right... True genius here, and refreshingly humble about it.
He's such a good player it brings a tear to my eye đą
Is it a glass eye?đ
Quite possibly one of the best talents of this generation. Dude deserves so much more fame and popularity in the music scene.
Humble, talented and genuine. He feels the music đ
Great stuff! Very happy to see Nathaniel on this channel đ
Nathaniel's technique is amazing... and so smooth!
After watching this I've put all my guitars up for sale and purchased a pickleball paddle.
Iâm just about there with you, brother damn!!đ€Ł
What a guy. Hugely talented, love it! Been following Nathaniel for several years now and always love the arrangements he comes up with. Keep up the great content Rick.
I love Rick's channel. Literally 'just' youtube videos but the recording quality is straight up album quality. Murphy on that guitar, with that amp has got to be one of the most buttery sounds I've ever heard.
I have followed him for a couple of years and have always wondered why he wasn't in a band or a studio musician. He is extremally talented guitar player and seems like a really good guy.
Rick, Rick, Rick, thank you.. This was great! I am an old jazz guy but I pulled a grin muscle watching this.. Fantastic..
I have aware of Mr. Murphey for some time just happening to catch a demo he did for the CME and was instantly blown away. He really plays like no one else and he is so humble and humorous. He SO deserves to be highlighted.
Rick, thank you so much for introducing me to this incredible talent!
