  • I have not made a lot of animatics in my time but BY FAR WAS THIS THE MOST TIRING + MOST FUN TO MAKE. Learning how to animate the serpents was an interesting experience, but it was a fruitful one indeed. Thank you all for almost 2K subscribers omg 😭🫶. Last bit was a tad bit rushed but I hope you enjoy nonetheless 🩵.

      I bet you're right. In the mythology Scyllas whole deal is 'Scylla will destroy your ship unless you give her 6 sacrifices as you pass through her territory'. The option is always there, Ody might have been trying to concoct some plan to get everyone through safely. But then the confession happens, the feeling of absolute betrayal overtakes Ody and he decides, in that moment, that some of his crew don't deserve to go home. 558 men have died, whats another 6?

    The part where Scylla says, "We only care for ourselves," always gives me chills because we must remember that this is after the Cyclops and Circe, who Eurlochus had no problem leaving men to! But now Odysseus knows that his FIRST MATE, THE MAN WHO HAS BEEN THERE SINCE THE BEGINNING, couldn't resist temptation and opened the bag after seeing Odysseus stay up for 9 DAYS to prevent anyone from opening it, leading them to meet Poseidon, who then killed MORE of their men. I wholeheartedly believe that Scylla's line is meant for Odysseus but also for Eurlochus and the rest of the crew.

    AAAAAAAA.. I loved all of this, but what really got me is the moment Eurylochus confessed to opening the wind bag. Odysseus probably thought it was something minor like that, and so he still had the shine in his eyes.
    But the *moment* Eury finished, Ody's eyes went dull, and that's *haunting*. And then the red glint in his eyes when Ody orders Eury to light those torches?
    I love it. Love it so much.

    • @riptors9777
      @riptors9777 Před 25 dny +12

      Considering that if Eury hadnt done that the entire army of 600 men would have savely arrived in ithaca without ever encountering Poseidon (who was hundrets of miles away at that point) that is quite an admittance of betrayal. This coupled with odys crumbling sanity explains his actions here and in thunderbringer to just give up on his crew who despite his every attempt of saving them have dissapointed him and blatantly ignored his orders for selfish reasons time and time again.

    I love how you make it look like Scylla is narrating/puppeteering both Eurylochus' and the crew's guilt as well as Odysseus' inner realization of betrayal to her advantage before revealing herself. I also like how in this animation Odysseus's "Eurylochus, light up six torches." Is more of an order that must be carried on instead of Eurylochus assuming that Odysseus has forgiven him. The red eyes and oppressive aura you gave Odysseus also shows that he intends to get away with murdering five members of his crew and Eurylochus instead of him looking shocked or guilty. The way Scylla says her lines while Odysseus looks up at her knowing exactly what he's doing while Eurylochus stares in disbelief, that last clip with Eurylochus looking angry at Odysseus for just sacrificing their comrades without any guilt or hesitation. Chefs kiss. Love this take on Odysseus 👏👏👏👏

    The moment when Eurylochus confessed opening the bag and the shock in Odysseus's eyes, the red in Odysseus's eyes when he orders for the torches and when he orders for them to just escape knowing well six of his men won't leave that cave alive, the way he closed his eyes when his men were being killed and how he purposely kept his back turned to them and instead focused on Scylla, looking at each other as equals, the fear and helplessness in Eurylochus's eyes as he was desperately trying to save his friends and the hard realization when he understood only those holding the torches were dying and finally that last shot where he is furious at Odysseus's decision to sacrifice them, just...EYES.

    TO BE FAIR, that was a stupid time to tell him about the bag. "Hey, my brother from another mother, i know we're about to pass through a dangerous creature's domain and you will MOST DEFINITELY be pissed from what I'm about to say, but im the reason you aren't home right now. Are we cool tho?"
    MY BROTHER IN CHRIST, THIS IS NOT THE TIME OR PLACE.
    That being said, this is definitely one of my favorite animatics for this song. I just love "phantom" Scylla singing to Odysseus. It just make sense to me she would have similar abilities as a siren

    Aaaa I think this one might be my favorite Scylla animatic so far!
    One of the trickiest parts seems to be the "I opened the wind bag while you were asleep" - no response from Odysseus -- long silence -- "Eurylochus. Light up six torches" -- and illustrating it in a way that emotionally, interpersonally, relationally makes sense. How you did it felt *so real* to me, not overdramatized or overexpressive but also really intense! (There's an adage that emotion-held-back, emotion-not-quite-expressed, is actually way higher intensity for the audience/viewer/reader than expressed emotion, because the viewer feels it *for* the character as the character gives signals of feeling an emotion but holding it in and restraining themselves, and that's like a building pressure so that the eventual release of expression feels *so much more* powerful.)
    Using the projection of Scylla twining around Odysseus as he was processing what Eurylochus just said was *so good.* and then stalking past Eurylochus to the front of the ship, and Eurylochus just having the dread/wince/withdraw response, that was *tangible.* The feeling of "well crap now they're really pissed and it's unresolved tension simmering and stretching" while you just feel awful and know you can't do anything to fix it. oof.
    also. also. Odysseus contemplating, listening to Scylla's voice, her outine eyes flash red, and then his eyes flash red to indicate that coldness/"become the monster" mindset?? brilliant

    i think that my absolute favorite thing about this song is that as the men are being eaten, if you listen closely, you can hear there cries as theyre picked off one by one. its really sinister, but i think it adds another layer to the music, almost assuring us of what we know is happening as we hear it. (with an animatic were also seeing it, but i still like the depth it gives the song.)

    So I haven’t watched many animatics of this song but OMG is yours one of the best I’ve seen!
    The hauntingly beautiful voice of Scylla (lack of better term) ghostly image influencing Eurylcus and Odysseus action is an absolute amazing touch especially using red eyes to show the monster in Odysseus was another great touch. I could echo back same praises as other but other then few I mentioned that were or likely will be repeated from this comment. Hope you take it with stride and know you deserve every bit of praise you get from this (in my humble opinion) masterpiece that you’ve made.
    Also to anyone reading this hope ya have an amazing day/evening.

    Honestly, I love this and this one so far has been the animatic that I have seen to be the truest to the actual psychology at the center of this. I've seen so many people just kind of slide over the confession of Eurylocus opening the windbag. Like... The moment I heard that and to be fair, I strongly suspected that was coming so I wasn't even really surprised by it. But the moment I heard it on the live stream and my theory was confirmed. I just did this supercut of all of the times that Odysseus was essentially taking the blame for Eurylocus' doubts and issues and how much horror he has seen and how he has signed away his humanity out of guilt over what happened to those men and it wasn't even his doing.
    People totally just ignore the betrayal there usually. And I think that even though Odysseus is more monstrous by this point in the story and is trying actively to pull away from what makes him human, it shows very much that he obviously still cares for his men and EVEN Eurylocus throughout Mutiny and Thunderbringer as he actively tries to help them avoid their inevitable Fates and pleads with them despite them being mutineers who stabbed him. The fact that he has this internal monologue where he debates suicide and ultimately can't give up his life and ever seeing Penelope again for their lives which are already forsaken, something that he no doubt knew. He still cares about these men and he still viewed Eurylocus as a brother. In Mutiny, he even refers to him as a brother as he tells him that he knows he would have done the same (which he DID try), To me it's so obvious that although he knew even though some of his men would die, he had no intention of picking or choosing whom until he suddenly had a reason to.

      This animatic was so chilling and haunting, every frame like a gut punch in my heart, every expression perfectly portrayed. Def one of my favs!!
      I do like the ones where Ody is more stoic though, only because of everything he went through, Eury confessing to opening the bag is like...the cherry on top of all the bs he's had to deal with up to this moment and I personally believe Ody is smart enough to suspect Eury was the one anyways. He's not angry, just disappointed. He's empty. He just wants to go home.
      Besides, I feel like people unintentionally do a disservice to Ody's character by ignoring the time he doxxed himself to the cyclops in a moment of grief just to place all of the blame on Eury (which is like 85% his fault I would agree with). Remember, they wouldn't even need the bag if Ody had just killed the cyclops in the first place, or not reveal his name and address. But we understand why he did what he did, we call him a dumbass but we empathize.
      Since this is Ody's story we don't get alot of insight into other characters heads. But my anger at Eury was soothed when I imagined how much shame and guilt he probably went through, the desperation to put the blame somewhere else (and who better than the captain and king?). But it still weighed heavy and he tried to confess in Puppeteer, Ody shut it down and his courage disappeared to try again.
      I dunno I just feel alot of emotions about these two and how human they are 😓

    Having Secrets and deep down being all selfish. Is just that Oddyseus is the one who have fully accepted and admited that side to him. He still tried to save the rest of the crew, if they did't go though Scylla's liar Posaidon would have catch up or still preventing them from aadvancing. It had to be done, still wrong he didn't tell the crew and indirectly making Eurylichus pick 6 men. But for Oddyseus that was he had to do.

    Your art is so amazing!
    Update: I think I love this animatic over the others just because of how callous Ody is in it. He really has no care over the lives he is sacrificing. He signed their death warrants with ease because he holds no more empathy for them. He knew he was going to pay that price, already steeled himself against it, and now he feels nothing at the bloodshed he caused.
    And you can tell that he intended Eury to die. It was just luck that he didn't.

    God I love your Scylla depiction! Probably my favourite one so far! And the wisps of her influence at the beginning? Argh so cool! I also love the idea that Ody is completely caught of f guard by E's confession, like he hadn't even thought about it! It's said in the comments before this one too, but E having a torch, forsaking it to try and save another crewmates, and realising whats happening... I 100% believe Ody asked him to light the torches, intending for him to end up with one in Ody's shock and betrayal.
    All in all, great animatic, my ONLY gripe is Scyllas heads moved a little slow, but I can't animate for sh** so who am I to pick?

  • @ajerqureshi6411
    @ajerqureshi6411 Před 13 dny +1

    What I love most about this interpretation of this particular part of the story...in the original Odyssey, Scylla was also paired with another monster called Charybdis, a large creature that creates massive whirlpools that would drag down entire ships. Odysseus was told specifically by Circe that he should sail closer to Scylla and lose six of his men, because the other option would have been to lose the entire ship (and himself)...essentially the lesser of two evils.
    By leaving out Charybdis, as well as Circe's advice, Odysseus's decision to sacrifice 6 of his men intentionally comes across much more tragic in my opinion, because it feels more like a spur of the moment decision based on his knowledge of the monster...and without Charybdis, it puts his decision to question because who knows what other methods he could have thought up...but he was so destroyed and desperate at this point that he would rather kill his own men than risk delay.

  • @Sarah-Has-Arrived
    @Sarah-Has-Arrived Před měsícem

    Your animatic is what made me go back to the livestream (I screen recorded it for myself lol) and realize that Odysseus was not only planning to originally sacrifice Eury after his confession, but that Eury had given up/lost his torch to a different crew member, but by the time he realized they were going for the torch bearers he was too late to save the man who took his torch - the man who took HIS FATE.
    It’s no WONDER Eury was so mad at Ody in the next song - so many people were calling Eury a hypocrite, saying he was going to leave men behind at Circe’s island as long as it meant they could get back home safely and the siren said this was the safest way.
    I mean, he’s still kind of a hypocrite because now that it’s HIS life on the line he doesn’t like his own mentality, but still. He almost DIED and then had to watch one of his friends die in his place. YIKES.
    But then again, in Ody’s defense… like people say this is all his fault. But honestly? It’s kinda Eury’s tbh. He started doubting Ody after Polyphemus but apparently that was the FIRST TIME Ody lost men???? After a TEN YEAR WAR???? Polyphemus was a CYCLOPS but STILL Ody managed to get them out. AND he would have managed to get them home safely if Eury wouldn’t have opened the bag. Because Aeolus didn’t lie and neither did Ody.
    Like we had the “Luck Runs Out” song and that honestly should have been our cue that Eury was not as solid a support as we all thought he was. He was doubting Ody from the start. When he really had no reason to. A TEN YEAR WAR with NO MEN LOST. That’s a HELL of an accomplishment. To only lose men to a CYCLOPS but then still manage to get MANY of the men OUT, as well as get the sheep as food that they were after? Ody was a good captain and king.
    If Eury hadn’t opened the bag, they would have been in Ithaca by now. And Ody, being the smart man that he is, 100% knows that. Eury’s doubt in him caused all this pain and suffering, lead them straight to Poseidon (because no storm returning = no Poseidon reaching them), lead 558 men to die.
    We joke that Ody doxxing himself lead to Poseidon knowing him, but that wouldn’t have MATTERED if Eury had TRUSTED HIM - as his general, as his captain, as his king, as his friend, as his brother.
    But he didn’t, and this is the price they are BOTH ultimately paying.
    Sorry for the long rant - anyway LOVE YOUR VIDEO! 😅💜
