Thank you so much Gaynor, I saw your video just in time. You saved me $$$$. I won't need to purchase those expensive cutting plates again. Cheers from Betty in Australia.

  • @greetingsfromswitzerland7403

There will be paper stuck in the mat in time and if you use another one as a top plate it will also warp in time. If you put the mat in hot water (doesn't have to be boiling) the paper will soak and you can rub it out plus the heat will cause the mat to resume its original form.

Just checking out the Sizzix Magic mats and seen your video pop up too. They stole your friends idea. Thank you so much for saving me some money. This is awesome and will save so many people money. Also they showed how to use one of the cutting boards on top and bottom so you never need to buy the clear plates again.

I can't believe it took me 2 years to see this! I rushed right out to Dollarama and found the exact same set of cutting mat and knife for $4 Cdn. Got my husband to cut it down to size, and tried it out right away. Perfect cut, stayed in place with the magnetic plate. Wonderful! Just when I'd totally given up on the warping, cracking, messed up plates! Thank you!!!!

This is brilliant! I have used a self healing mat for quilting since they were first introduced, many years ago, but now they will be repurposed! Just a note, always store your self healing mat flat because they will bend/bow if stored other than flat. Love your sweet personality!

Thank you for a really helpful demonstration. So good to find someone who is in the UK and can recommend products that we can buy here. It seems that the quality/material of these self healing makes a difference to its performance in the Big Shot. I have cut down and used one from The Works but after a very short time that, too, buckled/bowed like the plastic plates supplied with the Big Shot. As you say, it's due to the pressure from the roller which is greatest in the centre of the 'sandwich'. I'm not one to be easily defeated when it comes to crafting and am about to order a different brand of self-healing mat so I hope the result is better. Thank you, again.

This is such a useful tip and I've used it a lot. I bought an A4 size cutting mat from The Works (£3) and my husband cut it in half for me. It works very well as a cutting (bottom) plate although I found it works better with a piece of thin card as a shim - if I use two real cutting plates I don't usually need a shim. Even if you use a cutting mat on the bottom and a cutting plate on top, it will still save a fortune - you won't have to replace your cutting plates nearly so often. You might need to experiment a bit with shims but it's definitely worth a try.

I can’t buy plates for the machine anymore, but love the little machine. I have the Gemini go and my cutting plate and plastic shim are so warped, I don’t use the machine much because the plates won’t straighten out. Good news! As i mentioned i bought a X Cut A5 cutting mat from Amazon and used a pair of kitchen scissors to cut it to size and tried it. WOW its fantastic. I’m so happy to come across this video!!! Oh my God u r awesome! I came across Magic mat video from scrapbook.com this mrng and it made me curious to know what it is all about. When they mentioned that the mat is self healing I was wondering why it is any different than a regular self healing mat which costs so much lesser than a Magic mat. So before I make up my mind to buy it, I browsed through the internet if anyone used a regular self healing mat on Sizzix. And here I’m !! I wish I had seen it before when I was struggling with those plates ! Better late than never 😀 I tried using my does on my self healing mat and magnetic platform and viola! It works like a charm. A perfectly sized one is being sold on Mercari and Scrapbook.com is selling three sizes, regular, extended and small for the side kick ......People are saying that their husbands use their power saws ro cut the self healing mats to size. So you can buy one that’s the perfect size or make it yourself.

Hi Gaynor. I have been playing this morning and I only had 1 piece of thin self healing mat. I looked for the other piece but no joy so........ I have a GoPress and foil machine and had a look at the metal plate that comes with it and it was thin so I gave it a go and its worked. I now have the one thin self healing mat and the metal plate. Please everyone who reads this be careful as each machine is different.xxx

I am going to give this a try - I would think this might cut the dies better because the mat has give and it would make the pressure points easier without using shims

i cut into the precision plate( which i have never had to replace.) and the top one is a clear plate, thats my sandwich.. the top plate ,it still curls. i hate having to keep buying new plates. i use mine til they are curled so bad, no matter that i flip them everytime. idea is great. i wish it worked for me.

So your bottom plate is the
base,, then magnet page plate, then the paper shims, then the green mat, then the die, cutting side up, then put your paper one , then clear plate. Is that right?

Denise Woodley, you still need the one cutting plate on top for an evenly spread pressure. (No idea if I said that right. English isn't my first language)

Hi Gaynor. Thank you for this video I am always having to buy cutting plates and did try this but stupidly didn't put any shims so I had an embossed pattern. I have only been die cutting for a short period of time so don't know all the in's and outs yet. Can you please tell me how you cut your mat it looks so neat mine looks like a hungry mouse has been at it. Thanks again. Hugs xxx Wendy

lol, I have a gorgeous hubby who cut it for me, and it was trial and error to get the shims just right, I used about 3 sheets of photocopy paper and folded them in half and it works perfect, I hope this helps my angel x x

Stamp with Joy thats awesome! I would love to know if a few months from now it was still working as well! I’m going to buy a mat to try this! The new chrome precision base plate is pretty awesome too! It never gets any marks and stays nice forever too! I want to try this first before I buy it. But it’s only about 20 US dollars for the chrome plate.

Thank you for all your time with this! I bought an Olfa self healing mat and I think it is not as thick as yours. Had to experiment until I got the right amount of shim. Used 3 pieces of the card tag paper we get with DSP. Glued them together and they work great. However my self healing mat is already showing cuts from the word dies. Just curious what brand your mat is.

Thank you for your reply. It makes me feel a little better that the lines are there but not going through. I think you are right that the dies cut even better with the self healing mat. Maybe it is because of the give as you suggested. So glad I stumbled on your video. Now I am subscribed!

Hi Gaynor. Just found this this morning as I was flicking through You Tube. I have a question not really about this well it is sort of(that's welsh). I am having problems with the cutting plate patterns transferring onto the card or it looks like fiberglass pattern on the reverse of the card. What am i doing wrong? Is it time to throw the mat or should i put a piece of paper between or is there another explanation? If i use this method i know it probably wont be an issue but I would like to know. I have only been die cutting just over a couple of years and still finding out things. Sorry cant explain it much different so hope you understand. Hugs xxx P.S. Its a great way to cut out leaves as the vein pattern looks great xx

    • @StampwithJoy1967
      @StampwithJoy1967  Před 5 lety

I would pop some paper in between and see if that helps my angel, if not then buy one new plate and the self healing cutting mat and only use the plate on the top so it never gets cut into, that way you will keep the fibres away from your project....hope this helps x x

Hi Gaynor, thank you for replying to my question. Glad you understood what i meant. I saw some lovely coloured ones the other day so will get some but will try your suggestion first. Thank you once again xx
