Oh my gosh, thank you so much Deb Valder. I wished I would have seen this before, I have been struggling making my Christmas cards this year. Now I can be happy to get my dies all in one piece when I take them out of the big shot. You are amazing.

I've used wax paper and the intricate dies release very easily. I had to experiment with different types of material, but the idea is to not only get an intricate die to make a good cut but to release. The unused dryer sheets work really well but I have to use several. Hope this helps.

I don't know how in the world I came across your name here, but I thank God I did! I love your tutorials. You know why? Because you "teach" while you're doing them. You're not just showing me how to assemble a card. You're teaching me a technique with each one! Thank you so much, Deb! And so amazing...I just watched this tutorial this afternoon amidst my making tons of snowflakes out of glitter cardstock. I was so impressed and amazed with this dryer sheet technique. However... I am in the process of using my Cuttlebug to cut about 175 snowflakes...and 175 little centers for my grandson's wedding next month. They are beautiful...but I think I'd go through many, many dryer sheets. So I'm just going to continue doing them the "regular" way. There's really not much cleanup with these. I'm using a shim so they're coming out really nice and clean. I'm just glad I'm not making tons of the doily thinlit!! I guarantee you I'll be using this technique in the future! Thank you, thank you. I'm taking breaks here and there...in between fixing dinner...and I've watched a few of your other tutorials...the cotton ball thing...varying your embossing folders!!! Love it all. Oh, by the way...I could use my new Cricut Explore to cut these snowflakes out, but I really think, with the details of the snowflakes, this is much faster and I'm not stressing the blade on my Cricut. I don't mind the cranking the plates through the Cuttlebug...I've just gotten over the flu and need to build muscle back up...ha ha! Thanks again. And you have a faithful follower here. And since I don't have a Stampin' Up demonstrator here I'll be in touch!

Sherri, you are sooooooo sweet thank you so much for your sweet comments. I do appreciate you taking time to tell me how you feel. Thank you. Now, don't be afraid to use your dryer sheets for your current project!!!! They go a long way, I'm not kidding, I have one set right now that I put together and I'm way over 100 uses on just these four sheets. I've been using it myself and all of my club members have used it. I will be doing another video today with this technique and I'm going to show you this very thing. So I have this big box of 100 dryer sheets and I've used 4 of them for over 100 uses! NOT KIDDING!!!! Good luck with your amazing project. I did know about using dryer sheets but not in the way you have shown me and I am thrilled to bits (no pun intended) seeing how easy you made it look , having watched it its far and away the best way to use them, I too have avoided using many of my more intricate dies because of the difficulty getting the fiddly bits out but today I am going to have a just sit and enjoy them, thank you so much for showing this video its made my day.

  • @ceciliamontanez-arce7843

Hi Deb. It was a shame I didn't see this video before. I cut more than 60 pieces last week without was paper and it was a lot of consuming time......
My magnetic platform is on my way, so I used a regular big shot.
I try your Technic three times. First, I used four used dryer sheets. It didn't work.
Then, I try three used dryer sheets and one new one on top. It didn't work.
Finally I try four new dryer sheets and it works partially. I try again moving back and forward the big shot and it really works!!! I love it!!! Now I am using it just one way and it really works very well. It is very smooth to take my piece out. I am not going to use any more wax paper.
Thank you so much for sharing this Technic. It is amazing!!!

I used only 2 dryer sheets, folded in half, and cut a brand new intricate corner die. Thank you so much! I had been afraid to use it because of all the tiny bits that I was going to have to poke out. I just had to take a little bit of care when peeling the cardstock off the dryer sheet ... and I was DONE! P.S. My husband thinks I am more than a little crazy, because I had to show him and I was hopping around and squee-ing!

Deb, I just want to say 'WOW!!" this method is 'Awesome'...I used a VERY detailed birdcage, ran it through my Big Shot ( I would have been there for awhile longer if I had to 'Poke' all those small parts out), the next pass was like this: platform, cutting pad, 4 dryer sheets/folded in half, die with cardstock (facing down),2nd cutting pad, ran it through my Big Shot, as soon as I removed the 'top' cutting pad, the die came with it...lol...I very slowly 'peeled' the cardstock with the design on it, off, and 'HURRAYYY' all the small pieces stuck to the dryer sheet, no more pokie took...lol...Thank you for the Video...this one is really going to be a 'Time saver...Keep up the good work...

Now I can go ahead and start using all my intricate dies successfully. I love your enthusiasm for sharing your knowledge and you have a lovely voice. Bless you Jo xx

Wow, thanks so much for this demo! I'm somewhat new-ish to the whole die-cutting game myself, and I'd always heard talk of the "so-called dryer sheet technique" but was never overly impressed with it myself (even though I found that it *did* seem to help a *little* bit at least!)
Well, little did I know until now seeing this video that I've been doing it wrong the ENTIRE time!! I was using only ONE layer of dryer sheet... and not only that, but incorporating it as part of my sandwich!! lol So this is like a hallelujah moment for me!! :D
And I must also point out that another thing I like about how the little cut-out bits stay stuck to the dryer sheet until peeled off, is that if one wants to reuse them, then they're all perfectly laid out in the right configuration and affixed in a stable manner to then be able to easily give it whatever paint effect, inking, stamping, heat embossing, shading in with markers, glitter effect, etc that tickles your fancy... and with little fuss!
One can do an ombre effect, for example, without the frustration of all those little bits shifting around or flipping over while trying to work with them... and then when incorporated into whatever the project is, all the ombred shading will flow cohesively as they're meant to for a beautiful end result!
I think *THAT* ability alone opens up so many more creative possibilities in terms of reusing those little bits which would normally otherwise go straight into the trash or recycling bin!
Or envision, for example, cutting out a second butterfly in a different colour of cardstock, and then using the painted, inked up, embossed (or whatever you did to it) little bits from the first colour as a contrasting inlay to fill in that 2nd butterfly!...
...or even creating a dimensional effect by layering 2 or 3 butterflies together for thickness, and only using ONE layer of contrasting cut-out bits inlaid into their respective spaces to create a truly dimensional inset effect! Sure by filling it in, you'd lose that intricate, lacy cut-out effect... but for variety's sake, it sure opens up more possibilities!
So now that I've learned how to do this technique CORRECTLY the cogs in my head are spinning with all sorts of ideas!! And this considering that I'm only *now* learning it years later after this video was made... (so presumably also years after this technique had already become common practice in the scrapbooking world! lol -- though admittedly, as I'd mentioned earlier, I *AM* somewhat of a newbie anyways!!
So perhaps also this so-called revelation of mine is already commonplace and has already long since been employed by many 'o scrapbookers everywhere worldwide!... and so not *such* a revelation after all, but just that for *ME* personally, that light bulb is only *now* just finally lighting up! lol :P)
(One last note though -- and apologies for the lengthy comment! -- I also have to add that in terms of having to poke out all those little bits before, the brush tool made by Sizzix also does quite a fantastic job of quickly and easily removing those otherwise pesky bits!... but even so, this dryer sheet technique is STILL that much easier and MORE foolproof!!... plus with the added advantage of what I'd just mentioned above!)
So thanks once again for this great demo video!!

I just typed a long paragraph, which I erased because you all seemed so happy with the "dryer sheet" method. As I read down the comments though, some problems were arising which I'd covered in that deleted paragraph. The alternative is a LOT cheaper in the long run, in countries where dryer sheets are very expensive, but are also difficult to find. I understand as someone blessed to have lived on 3 continents & as a part-time crafter of over 30 years & due to my career specialty, I long ago, discovered 2 cheap, easy methods that when one initially purchases or uses the die, need be done only once!! A quick rub with a white candle or side of a graphite pencil nib (remove any "residue" with a soft cloth, although, if you don't go crazy, you don't get that problem). One other issue you remove, are the dangerous effects of dryer sheets , cold or warm. Of the 3-10 gallons of dangerous toxins found in the average home, those found in dryer sheets/fabric softeners also (even those marked "organic") can cause health effects, so worrisome that with other methods available, simply aren't worth the risk. I loathe people who "cry wolf" but too many tests & papers prove otherwise. I hope this helps!

After watching these videos for awhile, I decided to try it when I bought a die on clearance & found out WHY it was on clearance - impossible to get it off the die without shredding it. The technique works great, I agree. I also think you would only want to do this on dies that are highly detailed. After trying it and seeing my 4 new dryer sheets pressed into a hunk of what looks like semi-glossy mush (WalMart brand unscented), I doubted the ability to use it more than once on each side. But I found that I could easily remove the scads (love that word) and pull apart the layers and then reassemble them, and I can re-use any of those sheets again. THAT is good new as I do have alot of dies that are highly detailed but I had been brushing on baby powder & removing all of it and then the die pops off easily with a few pokes. I also have that brush and foam tool set and that works even better using the baby powder & Spellbinders confirmed that baby powder doesn't affect the dies (or the cuts) in any fashion! We are so clever! I'm a new subscriber Deb!

I love the dryer sheets technique. It was originally shared by Karen Burniston of Elizabeth craft designs. She said that every die cutting machine is slightly different, so 4 sheets may or may not be the magic number, so vary accordingly. What she said to look for is if the dies cut through the dryer sheets; then 4 is too few. TFS

+Deb Valder Since watching your video again, I have learned something - when using the Cricut Explore they say to remove items by bending the mat rather than the paper. Meaning turning the mat over and curling the mat rather than the paper cut. I think this is the same for the dryer sheets too. Try turning over the sheets and removing the sheet from the paper rather than the other way round. This will prevent stretching the delicate die cuts and they will be straighter. Hope this is a tip you can use. Hugs - Julie

Never thought to use dryer sheets that way. The way I prefer is to run the die by itself through the machine, cutting side down, on the tumble dryer sheets. Run through machine once, turn the sheets over put the die on a different area run through again. When you then use the die on cardstock the bits just fall out. Saved me a lot of tears & tantrums when using a really intricate die (Crafter's Companion's Spring Garden) for wedding invites.

SUCCESS! Finally. First, do not get your dryer sheet from the Dollar store. Their version is just too skimpy. I purchased the store brand dyer sheets; the only one without fragrance btw. I used the Die'sire Christmas angel die. It is VERY intricate ... about 100 tiny little parts. I first tried it with just running it through without running the die through first. That only removed 75% of the pieces. I then ran the die through with just the dryer sheets first. I tried it again. EVERY itty bitty star and snowflake stayed on the dryer sheet. Thank you so much. You do not have to use brand name dryer sheets, but the dollar store one will not work... at least mind did not. :D

I tried this technique with the Tim Holtz Crochet dies. My first attempt was a disaster. My cardstock die cut came off on the dryer sheet beautifully but most of the scads were very stuck in the die. It took me longer to poke all the sticky scads out of the die than if I hadn't used the dryer sheet at all.
I tried again, this time I used just four layers of dryer sheet instead of 8. Much better! I think the 8 layers were forcing the cardstock too deep into the die making it difficult to remove.
Another bonus with this technique, I did not need to use the precision base plate. Once I got the dryer sheet figured out, I tried with and without the precision plate and saw no difference.

      @stampladee  Před 5 lety
