Hey, ‘member that print I made of the Joshua Trees in fog? I had it framed and stuff. ‘Member? No? Your life doesn’t revolve around my CZcams videos? Okay, fine. Well, I made a print awhile back and I filmed the process for CZcams. In this video I’ll be making 4 new prints in that same style - pigment prints on Hahnemühle photo rag paper framed in a shadow-box style.
I took these 4 photos in Anza-Borrego Desert State Park. They were shot with my Mamiya RZ67 and a 6x6 back on Ilford Delta film pushed 2 stops with a red filter. That means they are f’ing contrasty and grainy. They also have some light leaks for those extra hipster points. These photos are like Johnny Cash - gritty, rough, and dressed in black.
The negatives were scanned on my Epson V750 using an inverted fluid mounting station from betterscanning.com. It creates superior results over regular fluid mounting, but to be honest, I have no idea if that place is still in business. SilverFast Ai Studio ran the scanner and SilverFast HDR handled the processing along with Photoshop and Lightroom. The gorgeous print work was done by my peeps at Pro Photo Connection here in California (www.prophotoconnection.com). They ship all over the place, so give ‘em a try. And the framing was done by the always reliable Salamon Art in Fountain Valley (www.salamonart.com).
If you’re in the San Diego area, visit Harland Brewing Company (www.harlandbeer.com) at 4112 Napier Street to check out these prints in person and enjoy a pint. Hey! Prints and pints! Man I’m coming up with all sorts of cute phrases in this video. By the way, they have a Japanese Lager that is so damn good.
So there you have it. From RZ67 to Ilford film to Hahnemühle paper to frame to rad brewery to your eyeballs. I hope you enjoyed coming along for the process.
    Thanks for watching!

Yeah, even small prints are worth experiencing. I send a small print (11,5cm x 11,5cm) every month to my patrons and they've told me how magical it was for them to hold them. I sometimes call these prints postcards because they're similar in size and I write a short text on the back but even without said text, there's something special about a printed photograph. Especially these days, when so many are not.

I agree 100% about printing. you have to print! They don't have to be fine art quality, you just need to be able to touch them. I develop and scan my 35mm and 120 using Negative Supply gear and my Sony A7Riii. Then I convert and edit them with Negative Lab Pro and Lightroom/Photoshop. I also print the digital stuff I like. I go through my edits once every couple of months, pick my favorites, and submit an order to Mpix. Most everything is standard 4x6 for my personal photo albums.
It's such a great feeling to see my photos in albums, and my friends, family, and clients like it too. Don't just relegate your work to Instagram. Print!

Great video like always. This past weekend I received my first print of a remodeled theater here in West Texas, the Ector Theater. I will honestly say that having it on print creates such a unique sensation about the photo, I stared at it for a good while, absorbing the image, remembering the time I took that photo, the satisfaction I felt when I received the print… it’s priceless. Now it’s on a frame on my desk at work. I feel bad to say that I have it on a cheap frame I got from Hobby Lobby. after watching this video, I will definitely invest in a professional frame, the Theater deserves it… my photo deserves it.

Proud to say I've watched every second of this, and I agree, we should print our photos more often. Recently, I've printed more of my photos in C-Type at A2 standard size, and framed them in some cheap frames I could afford. The feeling of seeing a photo I've shot in a frame is much much different than staring at it on a 13" MacBook screen.

Great video of an artist at work with all of the picky details and insanity it takes to get a final product like what Nick produced here. But... from about 28:00 on that's about the finest explanation of what I feel when I see something I shot hanging on a wall. Why I keep banging away. Why I sit on the floor and stare at the work when I see the finished product. Wow. I couldn't (and haven't) ever expressed it as articulately or well myself. Thanks for the how-to, but even more, thanks for the thoughts.

That was a fantastic journey you have just taken us on! Your comments at the end regarding the satisfaction of printing & Framing your work is very real. In Feb 2020 I did a photography trip to the Lofoten Islands in Norway from here in Australia (YES it IS a VERY VERY Long way!). I had 4 images printed and framed, I look at them every day hanging on the hall in my home, & remember the exact time I took the image and the work that went into capturing through to hanging the prints. It's a unique experience indeed Nick. I would do more BUT!.... lack of wall space and objections from my good wife prevent me from doing more except if I get an order for a print. (RARE!). Pixel pepping only lead to madness.
