Photographing majestic mountain scenes and exotic locations is cool and all, but you know what's really cool? Strip malls. Strip malls in Fullerton. Oh, and donut shops. Yeah, that's way cooler.
And that's why for this "Photography On Location" video I ventured out into my proverbial "own backyard" to capture some lovely old buildings and snapshots of daily life in Fullerton, California. You may see a junky donut shop or a janky thrift store, but I see potential, baby. Potential for some killer photos on 4x5 large format and 6x17 panoramic Kodak Portra 160 film.
This stuff is kind of like "architectural street photography". It's your classic tripod-mounted architectural photography with lens rises and film standard shifts but with a dash of the decisive moment. That makes it both fun and frustrating.
On this outing I put my Shen Hao HZX 45-IIa 4x5 view camera to work as well as my Shen Hao TFC 617-A. The images contained herein were made with my Nikkor 210mm f/5.6 and Rodenstock 115mm f/6.8 lenses. This equipment offered the aspect ratios and lens/film movements that I needed to bring these images to life. Then it only took 2 early mornings and 2 middays (with very specific weather conditions) to complete the package.
Thanks for watching!

Working late on a college assignment, head absolutely wrecked. Need to take a break before i go insane. Open youtube. Nick Carver video uploaded 5 minutes ago.....perfection
If I can take just one person away from doing work, I feel I've done my job.
@@nickcarverphoto it's probably more than one, at least two !!
@@nickcarverphoto No matter how busy I am I always find a way to carve out a little time for ol' Nick Carver, our large format analog Jesus.
I will now forever be in search of the analog photographer’s trifecta. The infamous *hat-trick.*
Legend has it that you'll also find a pot of Kodak Gold there.
Pp
@@nickcarverphoto LOL!
I like everything about your style, self-critique, and artistic appreciation. Great entertainment for a senior wannabe photographer.
Much appreciated, thank you.
Well said, Kenneth.
Absolutely Kenneth
You hit the nail on the head, Kenneth.
You know your business is basically done and belongs to the history if Nick Carver shows up to take a picture of the building. Great video as always.
Or maybe its the beginning LOL
New Mercedes at the laundry Matt makes perfect sense. It’s the owner who showed up to collect all the quarters. :))))
I also love that Mercedes, Forrest Haggerty! A beat up old junker is what expect in the launder mat and liquor store parking lot. The Mercedes becomes the story in this composition. I think you're right-on-the-money, Forrest. All those poor locals bought that Mercedes, quarter-at-a-time! I hope Nick sees the same as we do and shares the same love of the real story here. Glenn
@@mnragnar that could be the name of the composition, “A quarter at a time.” :))))
Nick, you're reading my mind. Let's record these glorious structures before they are gone, gone, gone.
Really underappreciated blgds.
Yesss love these on location videos.
Thank you!
Ohhhh I felt the frustration waiting for the cars to align. Also, it's amazing how often you'll be set up for a shot then someone will wonder into the frame, stop, and start looking at their phone. Sometimes they look up, see you waiting behind your tripod, then go back to looking at their phone. I'm with you about cars too. The newer the car, the more it ruins a shot. ('New' starts at around 1990 for photo purposes.)
The funny thing is, I am not really interested in doing film photography myself, but you tell such a great story on each of these on location videos that I keep coming back. I also like how you do a deep dive on the composition of each frame. Great stuff as always.
About to go sleeping - checking CZcams once again - nick carver on location Video - not going to sleep
What's sleep ever done for anyone?
you are funny, witty, eloquent and obviously great.
"Discussing" a picture is nice. But when the photographer says what he doesn't like and does it better and the result and the better image effect can be seen, it is even more exciting and instructive! Sharpen the eye. Especially when you put so much time into exactly the picture, then everything has to fit! Thank you!
Love your on location films! An the way you dissect them afterwards, superb. Thank you for sharing your passion and art with us x
Thanks for watching!
😱 ⬅️ my face when parking lot lights went off... U r so lucky 🤗🤗🤗🤗💕💕💕😍😍😍
New obsession with Nick Carver videos 🤲
Love the thought process behind the images and huge fan of the pano stuff
Monsiour Carver, you've done it again! Another excellent video. Please do more videos of perfectly framed shots of liquor stores.
I'll keep my eye out for another one worth photographing 👍🏼
I love the first pic of the doughnut shop. I would go back and try to get it with neon light sign on with building lights that with a little less depth of filed would be perfect for me. I agree with you on the laundry mat/liquor store. That last one was gorgeous. Great video proving that patience and persistence is what you need to make great photos'
Thank you!
Not seen: Nick running across the street to remove the cones for his 2nd shot.
And driving the delivery van out of shot, hitting the garbage bin in the process
I love how you find stories in the photos you take.
I love your photography of these small businesses holding onto time. Absolutely stunning photos, Nick.
Finallyyy, I was in serious withdrawal for Nick Carver videos!!
I always get a big smile on my face when I read "Photography On Location" in my inbox and I get ready to hear some sliding guitars.
Thank you for that 🙏🏼
Great to see an 'on location' video again. Lots of interest and super captures. I thought for one moment you might go a bit 'Gregory Crewdson' on the photo opportunity when the car pulled up outside the thrift store with its light beams on the building and someone getting out. But you still crushed it with the final version. Terrific!
A 4x5!
You never stop surprising!
Keep up the stellar work!
We love it 😊🍻
Thank you!
Your videos are just a repeated flex of how good of a photographer you are. This is a compliment. Its crazy how much you know about photography and how much effort you put into one photo.
You are far too kind. I feel like I still have so much to learn.
@@nickcarverphoto No man, its crazy. You know too much. Thats propably why you teach others lol.
Anyway, these on location videos are my fav videos right now so i hope you never run out of liquor shops and laundromats to take pictures of!
I work a block from here! Which makes this the best and most surprising Nick Carver video ever.
Yes, bloomin loved this 1, thanks so much for sharing.
Thanks for watching!
Once in a while some artists come-up with a fascinating and an immersive way of delivering their passion to the public.
I have to confess that I quickly get sick of the reviewers and all the youtubers flashy patina they give to new products and trends coming out, 99% of big names out there... Give-or-take.
From the camera positioning, the way you talk, how you pass the details that compose your rationale to the very honest transparent commenting... I don't know if you make it on purpose or just because it happens to be... but to me it has been a while since I've seen something like this on any channel.
It happens sometimes to find content just like this, from the audiophile to the remote Japanese shoemaker, exquisit fine woodworker or the passionate blacksmith, but this time... Its an analog photographer.
You don't only make photos, you give them a story, a meaning a soul...and finally pass that to this side... to us, The Viewers.
One Big thank you
Wish you all the best
What a nice mid-week surprise - new Nick Carver video.
I live for these on location videos
Truly, i think on them often and how no idea how to capture that feeling in my own work
Like a couple of others noticed, I loved the payphone! Thanks for this Nick...great stuff
Don't see those much anymore. Thanks!
Boy was I jones-ing for a Nick Carver video. Great timing Nick. Loved the dog in the basket. Also I laughed when you referred to the gumball machines as vending machines.
"I want to shoot this building straight on, perfectly centered in the composition, because...well..."
-vaguely gestures to self-
Always happy to see a new location video from you!
Thank you!
Looking over your shoulder as you develop a new composition is so calming and relaxing, few other youtube videos can aspire to match this. Thanks for your work on every video!
I really appreciate that. There are no shortage of photography channels, so that means a lot.
Interesting vibe on the 1st building, retail do nots, big windows, lotsa lights, but no door! "You can look..."
Very cool work Nick. Love the storyline and results!!
Thank you!
A former Winchells Donuts location, maybe they knew you were comming and changed it. havent been to Fullerton in a while, good times!.
This makes me think about how we even look at photos......how often we look at the big shot and miss all those intricate small details that make the photo tell a story. Thanks for the great photography lesson as well as a lesson on how to look at ours and others photos!
Thank you for the kind words and for watching
I drove by and saw your tripod out there that morning and thought, "This is exactly the kind of shot Nick Carver would be out getting" haha. My church is around the corner and we always get donuts from this spot.
Small world!
That donut shop is gold
I really love your dedication. Not only your videos are really well made, it really is motivating to go out and shoot with a big ass camera. Thanks mate.
Love your patience and abnegation toward your artistic work. Thank you for sharing.
You're my favourite large format youtuber Nick, and that's saying a lot because there are plenty to choose from! Good to see the 4x5" getting some action again. Now if only you shot the same format I shoot (8x10)...
Thank you! And man 8x10...I'd love to work with that kind of resolution, but not that kind of expense. Haha
Nice catch of the old pay phone with the phone book hanging below. An excellent artifact describing the neighborhood.
Totally agreed with the Mercedes thing. I like the two cars beside the donut shop happened to be from the 90s and a bit worn, fits the whole thing well.
Excellent!! Having watched your early videos, I can see you .... Getting really good at this. Great voice, sense of humor, presentation. Top notch work all around. Cheers!
Ahh... Really dig the slide guitar!
I appreciate it, thank you very much
@@nickcarverphoto my mother was born there... a long family history in Orange county😎
Big fan of your work Nick. Inspirational.
Thank you!
Good to watch this the night before I go on my first long distance photo trip to Cascade Falls, GA. A7II and Bronica ETRS loaded and ready to go. I wonder what I will forget.
A wet Miserable day in the UK Until!
Nick carver to the rescue 👍😀
A wonderful Triple bill of Large format fun 👾
I too was drawn to the bicycle in the last of three Excellent images 👏
Fantastic 🙂 I did quite like the floodlit store. different strokes for different folks 😁
Keep them coming I just can't get enough of your videos.
Man, those perfectly timed moments within photography, even more so within film photography, truly are something special. I find the architecture you’re drawn to to be rather funny. I'm a huge fan of the Bauhaus inspire mid-century modern stuff with all the harsh 90º angles myself. I totally get the draw to certain building styles, but I think its funny that you're so inspired by something I see as 10/10 boring. I do appreciate you having me take a second to appreciate the things I never dream to decipher....stack bond masonry. I always get a kick out of your On Location videos. Always good knowledge learned when watching another photographer think and do.
im a digital photographer, dont have the patience for film, though i do respect it. your videos are a solid reminder to slow down and think a little more on a broader spectrum when it comes to making images. digital or film, its a good thing to do.
Always happy to know non-film shooters can still enjoy these videos. Thanks for watching.
You did take your sweet time. But you delivered. We missed you here
King of film photography youtube videos
Right there at 2:38 the best example / explanation of view camera movements ever recorded. Thanks
OMG. THe bike with a bike photo at 23:02? That was my moment of the vid. We all have our styles and that'd be my photo.
Super detail and patience nick, thank you for your videos
Thanks for watching.
Wow. My hat is off to you!!! After years of 69 via Arca Swiss compact ( a camera I just love!), I threw in the towel and went all fuji. FX and GFX. A also use the Actus , but somehow it is not the same.
Love these pics and the approach !!!
I love me some Fuji cameras - especially the GFX line. Good choice.
you have really inspired my photography. your attention to detail has pushed me to look for those small yet influential aspects of a scene and embody the essence. I can fully say i would not be where i am today without you. it really is the small things that have made a difference in my photograhy and i really hope i can encourage you with this comment despite being one of 76.4 thousand people to see it. i am aware of the amount of time it takes to make a video like this and i thank you for being the one that does. thank you.
Yes!! Cool to see another fresh video again from the Boss! 😊😊
Nicks videos motivate and relax me at the same time.
ohhh.....yea......Nick Carver with a new video.
Always a treat to see you’ve uploaded another video. Superb work as ever.
Nick... absolutely loved the video and the images... but ESPECIALLY the dog!
I think my fav part of your videos is that you just put that awkwardness out there. Like, "So me and the chef made eye contact....so now I'm leaving." HAHA I feel that down deep.
Another fantastic video. And photos!
Thank you!
Love your videos and your sense of humour! Keep it up!
Thank you!
Another great video. Inspirational. I need to work on slowing down. Seems like I'm in a hurry all the time. Patience...like waiting for the clouds to burn off.
I hear that. I'm always in a rush in other aspects of my life. This is about the only time I slow down.
OMG when you took the first exposure I was ok with everything EXCEPT for the Mercedes for exactly the reasons you said! 😂😂😂
Thomas Heaton sent me here. Excellent recommendation! Thoroughly enjoyed this video 👌
Just what I needed to make this crappy day better! Can't wait to get home and watch it
You must have been thrilled when they came and took the construction cones. The shots are great!
Cool shots!
As a wildlife lover, I think I can confidently say that the hawk was a Peregrine falcon. It annihilated a pigeon, while you annihilated no doughnuts.
I've been annihilating enough carbs lately. Had to reel it in for once.
@@nickcarverphoto Wise choice. This pandemic has been real tough on waistlines.
I love the concept that modern day photographers are like archaeologists looking at life from the perspective of a future viewer.
You have inspired me to shake off the lockdown blues and go out with my large format camera again thank you.
Beautiful images Nick 😍😍😍
I like your videos 👍
Mihal
Thank you very much!
Always a good day when there is a dot beside Nick Carver indicating a new video.
Love it. Thank you.
Another great video! You always make me want to break out the 4x5, keep em coming!!
Nick, I cannot even tell you how much time I've spent in that HR Mart (back when it used to be a Circle K). I lived right around the corner and would take almost daily trips to grab a bag of hot cheetos or play Street Fighter 2 with the other kids from the neighborhood. That was my hangout spot (and we'd skate in that parking lot right where you had your car parked). The sav-mor thrift shop used to be a Thrifty's so after we'd get our grocery shopping done in that center, we'd head over to get a couple of scoops from the ice cream counter. Thanks for taking me down memory lane, and as always, great work!
That's some perfect '90s good times right there. And funny now that you mentioned what they used to be (a Circle K and a Thrify), I can totally see the repurposed signage.
Your location videos are definitely my favourites.
Love your laidback story telling and inspiring photos 👍🏻👍🏻
i waited almost a month to watch this in the right conditions..... half drunk wanting to experience good photography!
As a Mercedes Engineer from Germany i am laughing like crazy. Have to forward that to my product management 😄😄😄
Love your photos and videos SO much!
Thank you!
I don't want to stress you Nick but the world needs more Nick Carver on location videos! ......WAY MORE ;)
Oh man, this just made my night! Thanks Nick!
Yes, yes, yes, yes. There are no other youtubers that makes me more exited when a new video shows up in my feed. Thanks Nick!!
Love these On Locations videos Nick. I hope you make many many more. Cheers from the UK 🥃
Nice work, Nick! I'm glad that last shot finally worked out for you!
Thanks, Nick. I love these videos.

Fine work as always!
