Dont forget to line up the gaskets on either side of the carb properly. There may be fuel inlet ports (tiny holes) that the gasket can cover up.

Thank you for the content you share. I have a Ryobi 18" chainsaw for 3 years now and love it. Truth is I have not done anything to it, but I have been thinking I should do some preventive maintenance. Best chainsaw I have ever had. @@user-sp7kt7vw7w Your welcome our neighbour has been buying the Kinetix 2 stroke alkylate fuel from us for 5 years now and all 5 pieces of 2 stroke equipment you owns fire up and run fine but he is using it on a regular basis so very expensive. Issue always was that he was mixing his fuel with too much oil and would regularly need carb cleaning which was costing him way more than the annual useage and purchase of the Kinetix fuel.

    HI Mick.
I feel like that sometimes with Ryobi machinery at times lol.
I agree about the fuel (I bought one that instead of 50:1 2 stroke mix they had put a 50/50 mix), but in the owners manual it says to get it retuned after 4-5 tanks worth of fuel it's used.
It normally just requires a carb tune (special tool required) to get it to run properly.
What you have shown is a typical example of people trying to fix things, and not realising that if you need to drill it, then you're doing something wrong e.g. the fuel pipes to big.
I've had 2 mowers come in where the owners have drilled the pop rivets out to repair the pull cord (instead of undoing 3-4 bolts)! DOH!!

I can't see how it can suck in air if the fuel line is submerged in the the petrol. All the missing grommets do is prevent fuel from leakilng out. You can run a machine with the fuel cap off.

In my experience the ryobi stuff is usualy better quality than a lot of the other cheap brands. The problem is that because of the price people don't really look after them.
Also with the tank could you not have drilled a larger hole in the middle of the 2 making one big hole for a grommet?

Ive spent hours working on these strimmers. At one stage I had one in use one acting up and one in bits for spares. The earlier models didnt have spark arrestors but one overiding issue I saw with these units was ignition coil !! Symptoms are - works for 20 min and starts fairly easily but then stops when hot and cannot be restarted till cool no matter what. Seen this happen twice after numerous carbs carb rebuilds etc etc. The non-Chinese coils are expensive and make the unit not worth repairing. After the gauze the first thing I would have tried was 1/4 turn CCW on the Low jet.

I've got a 2-stroke Ryobi strimmer I've had for about 10 to 15 years now. They are pretty cheaply made, most screws go into plastic, for example.
It's OK and starts / runs fine, does the job, but only after some fiddling.
From new, the mixture was so weak - probably in the interests of emissions - it wouldn't run at all (that certainly kept the emissions down). The adjusting screws had no slots so you couldn't adjust it, but I got round that with a Dremel, and after some setting up, it started and ran fine.
Then I found it would start from cold no problem, but not when hot, needed to leave it to cool again. Really annoying. After a some faffing around (I've done a lot of kart racing so am pretty familiar with 2-strokes), the problem proved to be no spark when hot. Hard to prove as when you take the plug out the spark looks fine.
The cause was just insufficient HT voltage. When cold, rings don't seal as well, compression is lower, necessary voltage is lower, but when hot, it all goes up and the coil couldn't generate the voltage. Probably if I had managed to spin it over fast enough to get the voltage up it would have been OK.
Used to have this many years ago on small cylindrical CEV kart coils when they started to breakdown due to vibration.
In the end I got around it by making sure the magneto coil to flywheel gap was as tight as possible, and that the spark plug gap was on the low side. Since then it's been fine, but it's undoubtedly marginal. Possibly a replacement coil would be better, but it's OK at the moment - and maybe it would be a waste of money.
    Maybe that'll help someone.
Cannot say I like the quality much, but you get what you pay for. I'd much prefer a Stihl, but you pay Stihl money.
