    Stihl fs 130 bike handle trimmer. Very hard to start. Tried everything. Problem was that throttle cable had stretched so much that when start position for trigger was engaged there was virtually no opening of carb. Only adjustment i found is a ratcheting slide in handle accessed in small rectangular opening on top of handle. Small screwdriver pushed in and pried away from safety handle will tighten it up by moving cable shroud. Carefully take handle apart to see what i am talking about. 1-2 pull starts now. I ordered new cable.

    "The coil" is an electromagnet is it? It's a coil of copper wire around a magnet which is positioned close to the big finned metal fly wheel (sorry, don't know the technical term!) which is turned by pulling the starter cord. This in turn generates the current for the spark plug. & It looks like you just bolted off the old one to have it tested & bolted on a replacement?
    I am pretty well experienced with the use of 2-stroke garden machinery but not so much in diagnosing & repairing anything more than a worn out spark plug or pull cord. This video was very informative, great job showing the diagnostic procedure with disconnecting the earth connections on the coil. I will try that next. Then a new plug (the old one sparks but very very weakly), I know my fuel is good as it's fresh. So maybe I'm looking at getting a new coil.

Just how did a weed eater that hasn’t been used develop electrical problems hanging on a wall if that’s all it takes all of the equipment at the stores would be bad wouldn’t they

    I was waiting for you to test for spark again after having disconnected the kill switch, no? I thought that was what you did to check it it's the coil/magnet or not...And that there's no need to disassemble the switch area (nightmare to get pesky springs back in!).
    I've just received a new coil (slow boat from China). Two wires -- black, and b/w, like your two wires. I presume one connects to switch and the other to ground (old one must just have grounded through bolt). Does it make a difference which goes where? I presume b/w is to switch. Thank you.

    Devin, I have a Stihl mini tiller with the same engine you are working with here and I can not get it to even fire. I can rebuild this entire engine by myself and have no hesitations as far as my ability to do it correctly. I rebuilt the carburetor and it was spotless on the inside, not one spec of dirt or debris. I am getting somewhere around 140 PSI compression. I am getting a very strong spark and the spark plug is brand new and putting out a dark blue spark. I even took the flywheel off to make sure the shear pin was not sheared off and the timing being the culprit and no such luck. I've shot carb cleaner gas and brake cleaner in the carb and once again can not even get it to fire. I tried brand new Stihl 2 cycle fuel from a Stihl dealer and still nothing. The primer bulb is working properly and filling the chamber as it should. I think I about covered everything. Got any ideas?

    • @TheDurbinCompound
      @TheDurbinCompound  Před 2 lety

      Does it run if you shoot starting fluid down the carb? If it runs with a shot of starting fluid, you have a fuel issue. You have compression and spark, lacking air or fuel. I think it would be pretty impossible to not get air so I blame fuel at the carb.

    I can confirm that it feels very odd to feel the spark come through your body with every "chug" of the starter

    Couldn't see the spark on the video - they do sell spark plug testers that go inline and go red when there is a spark... If it is a Stihl then most problems are fuel issues and mostly carburatuer issues. They are cheap and are cheap to replace. Most newer Stihl kit is now rubbish - buy another brand..

      That's the way Americans speak. It used to annoy me that a friend of mine had picked up the habit of saying, 'Hi'. I'd sneakily respond by saying, 'Oh, you mean 'Hello''. How to Win Friends And Influence People!
      What really gets my goat is that they can't just do something; they always have to 'go ahead and VERB...', 'went ahead and VERBED ..'
      'This bad boy' pisses me off, too.
      I wonder what speech habits annoy their sensibilities; not bad manners like criticising their English, but actual speech habits.

    Should be called how to troubleshoot a bad coil, what about all the other failure modes? I checked mine with starting fluid, fires. No gas in the primer bubble, so obviously a fuel problem. Was running great and then just died mid-job. Don’t know what to take apart next

    "Is there anything more frustrating than pulling out the string trimmer only to find it won't start?!"
    Well, trying to watch a video filmed by a camera or phone that was not securely mounted and kept shaking every time you try to focus on something comes pretty close..
    Devin:"gonna pull on the cord to see if I have any spark here"......[pull...pull....pull...]
    camera: [shake...shake...shake....]
    picture: [blur...blur....blur....]. lol

    • @francoamerican4632
      @francoamerican4632 Před 11 měsíci

      That was done purposely because there was nothing wrong with the trimmer and the shaky camera prevented the spark from being seen.

    Fuel only lasts about 3 months when using these so make sure you change fuel 4 times a year. Dump the old fuel in your tractor if it's dilluted enough and burn it up.
