So every season I clean spark screen, change or clean spark plug, change or clean fuel filter (compressed air), change or clean air filter (compressed air). Checking the primmer pump bulb as well. The gasoline processed today has a higher alcohol content which has a tendency to dry out gaskets and rubber parts faster ..than in the past.

    3 of my favorite channels are yours, Taryl fixes all, and Chicanic. She did a video on this (she is a tech for a shop that is a Stihl dealer.) What they found is that a vast majority of the time the owners were using Stihl oil. For some reason, unless you are running full throttle most of the time, the exhaust screen clogs. They almost never see it occur with other oil brands. Go figure. If your Dad is using Stihl oil, tell him to use something else and it won’t hurt a thing. She also said to never run a curved shaft trimmer without a guard. The shafts are not really made to handle the extra load. I hope this helps you.

    Great video, that is very strange that the exhaust outlet port got restricted instead of the spark screen, I would keep the spark arrestor in my equipment.

    My first thought is check the muffler and exhaust port for blockage of carbon.
    A lot run them at slower speeds, they are designed to run at w.o.t., this can cause the carbon buildup to happen faster

      yes very usual suspects on this engine. wasn't expecting the tailpipe blockage though.

      @@HomeGaragechannel your dad took good care of his trimmer bro. I've never seen carbon build up on the spark arresta screen so little bit yet caused some serious problems especially with the low power.

    Do know if the Battery power heads the have interchangeable trimmers can run the edgers from gas trimmer like the expamd it system?

    • @HomeGaragechannel
      @HomeGaragechannel  Před 2 lety

      from what I can tell, only the ones that look like the gas versions, which were the transitions from gas unit to electric. But after time, they'll change the entire design and at the point, the attachments will not be interchangeable.

    The screen on my 85 is still clear so no problem BUT I have an MS440 Magnum saw that always slobbered and just had one 1/2 inch hole for the exhaust. No blockages and the muffler has no baffles. I drilled another 1/2 inch hole beside the original and it seems to run better. Screen is clear here too and no buildup from the piston on out. The 'H' jet is bottomed out so that's not the problem. I got the saw because of having straight gas run in it but a factory certified Stihl teck put another Stihl top end on it so it's right as far as no knockoff parts. I think it runs better but not as good as it could but I can live with it. Just something to think about. Another Stihl carb is $145 and that ain't happening. More of the same. Thanks, happy weekend and Blessings!

      @@HomeGaragechannel Years ago the golf carts had Kohlers on them with a muffler the size of a big can like green beans were packed in commercially with a small outlet hole, like an expansion chamber. They ran and were quiet. I wonder if Stihl was trying that principal on that saw but it can't breathe in if it can't breathe out. Just my take on it.

    wow that really surprised me. as soon as i saw what the trimmer was doing i instantly thought spark arrestor. wow was i wrong. also i love the action shots to see how the trimmer cuts after the fix. my question is have you ever given up on a machine and why

    • @HomeGaragechannel
      @HomeGaragechannel  Před 2 lety

      good question, i gave up on a ryobi 4 stroke, and the reason was that the repair wasn't feasible because it was a design flaw. a new block would have been needed.

  • @blueheelerfriend8450

    It's obviously Idled too low and starving for fuel .. replace fuel lines they are probably dry and cracked not making good connections I've had many two cycles with the same exact thing happen and that fixes them almost every time... the exhaust mod helped it run better but I don't think that was the real problem just my opinion
