- An episode of The McLaughlin Group, as aired on Toledo, Ohio's PBS station on February 24, 1989. Hosted by John McLaughlin. Panelists are Patrick J. Buchanan, Fred Barnes, Jack Germond, and Mort Kondracke. There is a brief few seconds of video missing from the episode (during the segment about David Duke) where I had accidentally pressed record on the tape many, many years ago (oops!). This is the earliest episode of The McLaughlin Group that I ever taped off the TV, by the way.
"I think there's a chance I could jump six feet, but it ain't likely, John!"
I am fully obsessed with this show.
Wrong!!! The answer is: we had Special K with banana!!
hall911guy what number am I thinking, JACK GERMOND??? Wrong!! 134, 134...NEXT ISSUE!!!

Wrong! No! I told you, no!
I'm not finished with your name!
The sharpest minds, the hardest talk. Gonna miss you John. May your show go on forever. RIP.
Wow, what a blast from the past. My dad watched this show every night, or so it seemed. Even that GE commercial at the beginning brought back memories. I knew the words by heart.
Loved watching this show with my parents. As a kid it educated me on the political issues of the day. "BYE BYE!"
WRONG!!!
god thats why mclaughlin was MUST watching on Sunday mornings
+newt0830 I Watch McLaughlin Every Friday Night, and It's a Party!
"Wasted rectitude." I love John McLaughlin so much. Rest in peace.
Thank you for recording and sharing all of these years later.
Just as interesting in 2019 as it was in 1989.
David Brock remember when their was conservative democrats LOL! Seems like a lifetime ago
great memories watching this show as a young person, his demeanor, prodding, and insistency kept me engaged, I would actually listen and learn small bits of info, it nurtured my curiosity about politics
I still watch the show every Sunday on channel 2.
R.I.P. John. You'll be so missed but I know we'll meet again in the presence of Jesus! What an awesome promise!!
WRONG! John picked the incorrect version of Christianity and has been in hell for the last 4 years! Next issue.
nice to see the vintage John McL in action once more.. Thanks
As a political junkie college student I loved watching this show during the 80s. Thanks for bringing the memories!
And people thought Tower was corrupt. Little did they know what awaited them in 2019.
I get better with age.
I would give anything to see a guide with all the panelists for every single McLaughlin Group episode
I miss Jack Germond, and now I have to miss John McLaughlin too. This was a great show. Where is Eleanor ... the heart of the show moved from Jack Germond to Eleanor at some point.
All-star group right there. TMG at its best.
The #2 classic group panel in the show's history behind the original group when Robert Novak occupied Barnes' seat. I've yet to find a single show from when Novak was still there (he abruptly left in the Summer of 1988 when his feud with McLaughlin reached the breaking point and he started "Capital Gang" on CNN, ironically with Buchanan doing both shows!)
Ah, the McLaughlin Group: a refreshing breath of hot air!
I was 9 when this aired. I'm watching this because of Dana Carvy on S.n.l. but it's really interesting to watch
political debates from the time. I watch so much of it now.
Jackarooo Germandooooo, care to chime in? WRONG!
Good Man, but couldn't keep his Flie closed after the typical 20b Martinee lunch. Was a great information resource
McL missed one show in over 34 years and even then he aired a pre-recorded message what a fucking legend!
0:28, Here's Your Host, John McLaughlin
As a conservative in 2020, I amazed at the conservatism of the liberals on this panel.
21:15 Pat Buchanan: "The candidate's a good candidate. Excuse me, the klansman is a good candidate . . ."
"No fighting in front of the television kids."
Very informative programming.
Now I get it when Howard Stern says that the main role of being VP is to attend funerals. When Bush was Reagan's VP, he attended 408 funerals alone in 1988.
Or as George HW Bush put it, "You die, I fly."
Your video was featured in tonight's episode. They played a short clip of your intro. Congrats.
What a pleasant and insightful show this used to be with these journalists before the days of a shrieking, ill-mannered, ill-informed Eleanor Clift.
McLaughlin looked old in 89, lol. I've got to hand it to that man for doing it as long as he has
Eleanor is the worst. This used to be a fine show...no more.
geezersinc Fred Barnes is the conservative version of Clift and even worse. Monica Crowley was also ill-mannered and ill-informed. There have been much worse than Clift.
GameShowGarbage you only say that because you're a lib though
No, I say that because I've seen Crowley on FNC and thought she was annoying there too. I wonder, who is/was the worst ever McLaughlin Group panelist of all time?
rip sir....condolences to family.
"Elenor-gee I think you're swell-enore" Cliff! WRONG! (As usual!) Bye-bye! :)
Was this Bush's trip to Tokyo where he got sick and threw up on the table, then nearly passed out?

The four best known panelists on the McLaghliin Group.
don't forget Elinore gee I think you're swelinore.
Germond was the greatest!
10:08 As it turned out, Khomeini did die just three and a half months later. But it didn't help Rushdie any.
CBS Evening News aired an excerpt from this episode tonight in their segment about the passing away of John McLaughlin. You can view the CBS segment at czcams.com/video/-40GCG-Keuk/video.html
R. I. P., John McLaughlin!! :-(

Looking at the senate there....just amplifies the problem we have in our government....career politicians. Some of these jokers are STILL in office one way or another. They mention Senator Chuck Grassley, senator of my state. While I love the guy, he really is a decent guy..he's been a senator WAY too long! 35 years should never be happening. Same with McCain, and half of the other guys in there. We really need term limits in the Senate/House.
+StormLaker1975 is your profile picture bubbles from trailer park boys lol
Best show nobody has every heard of....unless you have Netflix or are Canadian!
Damn that economist was correct.

Remember when our issues involved some personal vice like drinking, or a sex scandal, and didn't involve inadvertently handing over thousands of classified documents to other nations?
Remember when the public was actually concerned about things like that?

Lol @ 17:00 with Lee Atwater, the guy who explained how since Conservative Southerners could no longer say "Nigger, Nigger, Nigger" they now had to use racist dog whistles, which he was fully behind, calling our David Duke for racism.

Here's the irony for all the flaming liberals who have considered Dick Cheney among the most evil men in the world. The Democrats rejection of John Tower as Secretary of Defense is what made Dick Cheney Vice-President in 2000 since Cheney was appointed Secretary of Defense instead and his subsequent career stemmed from that. Cheney would have otherwise stayed in the House or been elected to the Senate from Wyoming in the 1990s and stayed there.

Gop can't deal with the populist right. Trump anyone?
If I were renting out an electric at Laguna Niguel drainage, I would say: "lots a people are homosexual," dock near where the prodigy shirt shown, unbuckle my seatbelt and get out!

The SNL skit was better.
Great insight into the current GOP’s courtship of white nationalists.
