Bidding farewell to the American century | The Chris Hedges Report

  • Like Cicero in the Roman Republic, there are always a handful of chroniclers who can see and articulate clearly the social, cultural, and political realities of empires in terminal decline. They call out the bankruptcy of an inept and corrupt ruling class, blinded by hubris, as well as a populace that has checked out of civic life and is entranced by bread and circus spectacles. In his trilogy “Blowback,” “The Sorrows of Empire,” and “Nemesis: The Last Days of the American Republic,” Chambers Johnson does a masterful job of showing how and why we are disintegrating. So does Andrew Bacevich, who, in his newest book of essays, “On Shedding an Obsolete Past: Bidding Farewell to the American Century,” writes about the debacles that have beset the American empire since the Vietnam war, a conflict he fought in as a young army officer. Bacevich warns that Americans’ inability to be self-critical, to dissect and understand the litany of disasters that have followed on the heels of Vietnam, including decades of fruitless warfare in the Middle East, will have terrible consequences for us and much of the rest of the globe.
Andrew Bacevich is a retired army colonel and Emeritus Professor of History and International Relations at Boston University. He is the cofounder and president of the Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft, and the author of numerous books, including “The New American Militarism,” “The Limits of Power: The End of American Exceptionalism,” “America’s War for the Greater Middle East,” and “After the Apocalypse: America’s Role in a World Transformed.”

We pay wages to our manufacturing workers and our military. They support their families, pay taxes and support businesses in towns across the States. We were attacked unprovoked on Sept. 11th. Iraq citizens complained they were gassed, and Saddam refused inspectors' access. South Korea and South Vietnam asked for our help when they were under attack, then stole from our military creating a black market because they choose crime over honest paying jobs. The Afghan War (20 years) was a HUGE success for the parties that matter: The Military-Industrial Complex. That "failed" war was spectacularly successful for the defense industry, and it was fought on behalf of the defense industry and its political leanings. The largest US export is WAR, so a war's "success" is measured by its cost...the more it costs, the more successful it is. It's that simple.

Saddam Hussain declined inspectors access after gassing people in Iraq. That's not our fault. We were attacked on Sept. 11, unprovoked. Putin is chasing defectors in Ukraine, claiming they speak Russian. Ukraine asked for our help, so did South Korea, South Vietnam, Haiti, and US was attacked at Pearl Harbor unprovoked. We weren't in WWI or WWII until we were forced into it. Germany was attacking merchant ships delivering supplies to impoverished European nations in WWI. Japan was brutally attacking the South Pacific Islands, slaughtering innocent people during WWII. God Bless America.

The only reason international shipping isnt plagued by piracy is the omnipresent US navy, in an agreement stretching to the end of WWII. The Afghanistan war was extremely successful. It fulfilled it's main objective for 20 years. The objective from the beginning to the end of that, and the other wars, was to take money from the American people and their future, and give it to the military industrial complex. Period. Also seen in Europe today.

Ehh, but the defense industry is one of the reasons why we've got nuclear power, space exploration, computers and the internet, not to mention a lot of other benefits it gave. It's simple: war is a massive motivator for technological innovation. If you're still not convinced of this with those examples, let me drop some facts: Nazi-Germany and the technology they had, america that invested a lot in nuclear tech for the atom bom, the Cold War and the soviet union challenging each other for technological supremacy and not to forget israel that had to be technologically better to defend themselves. Threat is an great motivator, especially concerning democracies and the freedom of speech.

There's no need for atomic bombs. And had the US been consistent in helping china beat the Japanese imperialism, pearl harbor shouldn't have happened, and the atom bomb would not be dropped. Plus, if you care that much about technology advance, you understand you might talk to people who are actually in tech? It's not the way to bring in advanced technology that benefits the masses. And what advance do you have when you constantly lose in war? Vietnam is not the only example, Afghanistan and Lebanon too.

The system not the political and cultural infighting but the actual system itself is untenable.
