What’s your favorite lesser known slasher?
The list would overwhelm you.
I recently watched Black Christmas (1974) and was blown away. I think it actually may have surpassed the original Halloween (1978) for me on the ‘best of the slashers’ list. It’s incredibly atmospheric, genuinely funny at parts, and genuinely terrifying at others. I found it more frightening, conceptually, than Halloween, because unlike Michael, in Black Christmas, Billy never leaves the house. He remains a constant presence. A constant threat to anyone who enters. A living ghost whose motivations are never revealed.
@@mr.turner6470 yeah. Some give it credit as starting slasher craze.
House on Sorority Row or The Prowler probably, unless you count My Bloody Valentine as a lesser known slasher, then that would be my favorite.
You made a mistake about Bloddy Matinee. That movie is an Argentine-Uruguay production. Not just Aegentina which is why it was shot entirely in Uruguay. Oh, by the way, Montevideo is IN Uruguay...NOT Argentina. Which are two different countries.
The ending to Happy Birthday to Me has to be seen to be believed, love that movie lol
It is totally bonkers & completely pulled out of the studio’s asses 😆 the original twist made more sense with the tools set up, but of course the studio wanted to milk the surprise twist trend
The shovel over the head scene in Psycho II always has me laughing and watching it over and over again. 😂
Worst headache ever.
I love these unsung horror movies videos. "Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon" is criminally underseen. It deserves to be a a straight up Horror Classic, not just a Cult Classic.
I agree it's criminally underseen.
It's been deleted in Britain
and I don't download or stream movies,
I like to own solid copies.
So I'm on the hunt for it.
I do occasionally buy stuff
off the internet
but only as a last resort.
BAAAASTAAAAARD... oh and Cherry Falls such an underrated gem
Now I have to go back and rewatch Psycho 2. I haven't watched it in over 30 years. As a kid I thought I didn't like it. Let's see how I feel about it now
It really is a good sequel to the original film. Tom Holland really did show love for Hitchcock & Joesph Stephano’s script, but builds even more layers to Norman and Perkins is in top form under Richard Franklin’s right direction. The ending is pretty tragic in its strange way, but made another haunting image
Psycho 2 is better than the original! There I said it!
I think you’ve covered almost all of the underrated 80s slashers that aren’t well known. The ones that are well known include Big three, My Bloody Valentine, Slumber Party Massacre, Sleepaway Camp, Black Christmas, April Fool’s Day, The Stepfather, Maniac and Maniac Cop for the record. The only exceptions you are missing are The Funhouse and Alone in the Dark, which are also underrated. Great job! House on Sorority Row is probably my favorite of this selection.
Edit: Forgot Silent Night, Deadly Night in most well known, sorry guys.
Black Christmas was 74, right? You might be thinking of Christmas Evil or Silent Night, Deadly Night.
@@asslevania588 I mentioned Halloween (big three), so I thought it could add in Black Christmas. Although I thought I listed Silent Night, Deadly Night but I guess I forgot.
Black Christmas came out in the mid-70s. I also loved, as bad as it was, 1982's Beast Within and also 1983's Curtains! LOL You have some great picks!
@@jbjacobs9514he mentioned curtains in one of these videos, and I’m not considering bad movies either.
I think people were just pointing out you mentioned all the 80s slashers had been covered and included Black Christmas from the 70s amongst big (impliedly 80s) slasher films, but I understand the mention, as it and Halloween are the only big 70s (true) slashers. Some others missed include The Initiation, Funhouse, and Slaughter High are a few other decent ones that I think got missed.
Fun fact, my college acting teacher was in Popcorn. She’s the woman in the black and white “Mosquito” film
I feel like I’ve seen this comment before. I guess that makes sense because she did teach students, but it’s funny to have deja vu
pieces is possibly one of the most fun slashers to watch with a group of friends!! it's out of control.
Psycho 2 never gets the credit it deserves. It's a fun slasher watch for sure and had no right to be as fun and good as it really is.
I gotta say, Psycho 2 is one of the best movies ever to me.
It's so fantastic and is one of the best horror sequels ever.
Most people will never open themselves up to this idea, but I think Psycho 2 is vastly superior to the first film. The original, without its reputation, is very, very ordinary. Psycho 2 is my favourite horror film, ever.
Thank you for including Popcorn! Its such a goofy and great horror comedy!
I am Argentine and I had NO idea the last movie even existed. Distribution for local films is trash, they never get any screens nor any kind of publicity
The film its uruguayan actually
I honestly haven't even heard of some of these movies. Great video Matt, you got me to look into more horror movies and I might find some hidden gems.
Good lord I love Dark Night of the Scarecrow. I might have to watch that tonight.
This list has inspired me to watch a few.
Popcorn and Psycho 2
in particular.
When you've got as many movies as I have,
it's easy to forget what you've got.
It's nice to have little reminders like this.
Oh man I just bought a limited edition steel book Blu-ray of Popcorn directly from Synapse films at a horror convention the other week. I still need to watch it.
I watched it on Shudder and found it quite fun. Love the homages to William Castle’s gimmicks with the watch party. Plus the cast is a lot of fun though Jill Scholeon has a few moments of stilted delivery (not terrible, but looks like she’s sleepwalking a few takes) & the reveal of the killer was pretty wild and I love the makeup for his look as it’s like Bizzaro Pinhead
I've got 2 versions of Popcorn
but can't tell the difference between them.
Initially I thought they might just be from different distributors with different covers
but the run times are different.
The Dead of night collection version is 91 mins
and the Prime version is 86 mins.
I've watched both versions numerous times but they seem to be exactly the same.
Despite having different run times neither appear to have anything cut or added.
Lotta great picks on this list that I've discovered thanks to Shudder.
Some more I would suggest - Hell Night (with Linda Blair), Hard Rock Zombies (part slasher/part zombie movie), and Argento's Trauma
Hell night was awesome.
Good picks! Hell Night was in my first 13 slashers video
I just showed my friends Happy Birthday to Me on my birthday and boy was that a trip for them. Then we all talked about how we would remake it.
Thanks for giving love to House on Sorority Row. It’s underrated and in my opinion just needed a bigger budget to be up there with the classics. It had everything else going for it.
Dark Night of the Scarecrow!!!
I always get so excited when I open up CZcams and see there's a new matt draper video
Dark Night of the Scarecrow was AWESOME! One of my faves, super creepy.
I never agree with the notion of slashers being classified as "trash" movies because films like Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Halloween and Black Christmas are examples of slashers with class and are all influential to pop culture which people celebrate every year. Slashers like My Bloody Valentine are films I see as very underappreciated in its time which over the years people saw how much effort was actually put into it which by today is regarded as a classic. Great you are putting out there slashers that should get better spotlight.
Same, plenty of slashers are well done horror movies. Most of the stuff that are mentioned in these videos are actually quite well made, even the 80s with the exception of Hell Night and Pieces which I don’t think are well made movies.
People just assume that they're clichéd.
I blame Scream for that.
The so called "rules" don't apply in most cases.
Most of them are only from Halloween and
Friday the 13th part 5.
I'm sure they're in various slasher movies
but they're not as abundant as people think.
@@thomasffrench3639
You didn't like Hell night?
Fair enough.
I quite enjoyed it but each to their own tastes.
I've got Pieces but I don't remember it.
@@abegarfield7031 that’s definitely debatable. Tons of slashers “follow the rules”, but that started to become more common in 1983 and onwards
@@abegarfield7031 it’s fine, but very mediocre. Nothing special about the movie.
You snickering at 'Dick Moss' fuckin' sent me 🤣
Sir, you have impecable taste....so many underated gems......
Dark Night of the scarecrow is one of the most underrated horror movies of all time. Though I would call it more of a supernatural horror than a slasher. It was eerie ominous and a perfect horror movie when I was a kid. Epic cult classic.
I remember watching that years ago. It was more of a SPOOKY Scary like Poltergeist than a Bloody Scary, like Friday The 13th.
Love Psycho 2. Behind The Mask is great as well. I recommend Man Bites Dog.
Ah yes, Pieces. It's basically the Shadow with a chainsaw.
SPOILERS!!!!!
The ending makes sense, he's a chick magnet so the dead body wanted a "piece" of him as well.
Oh jesus hahaha
Some great slasher picks here. Happy to discover a few of them on Shudder.
I love the little references you put into these videos. I did not click on this video expecting a Doki! Doki! Panic trivia meme
Amazing list Matt! Gotta check out some, if not all these movies.
Also, that snort upon uttering Amsterdamned's director's name caught me by complete surprise. Couldn't hold it in, could you? Well, me neither.
Love the choices & it’s nice that I know of these and seen a majority of them. Keep up the great work, Matt 😄
Even though I knew 80% of these, this was still a great video. Any love given to Slashers is A+ in my books. By far my fav sub genre of horror. Keep up the great work Matt!
Shoutout from the Netherlands! Thanks for mentioning Amsterdamned :)
My friend’s dad directed Psycho II. Richard was a talented director and, while his son doesn’t want to follow the same path, he’s also an excellent person
Thanks for the amazing video Matt ❤
Great to see another video Matt. Keep up the awesome work. I like the Valentine's day killer from my bloody Valentine.
Another good one is Midnight Movie (2008) I think it is Truly underrated. If you do a part 3 I strongly suggest this one.
Dark Night of the Scarecrow is a TV movie, and is great!
Me and my cousin thought we were the only ones who had seen it. It wasn’t until the internet came along we found it had a cult status. I was thrilled when it was finally released on blu-ray.
I’m so happy to have found this! I thought I didn’t have anything new to watch
I’ve been a huge Friday the 13th fan since my teens, but didn’t see The Burning until I was in my mid 40s… now I absolutely love that one and it looks and feels like a lost early 80s F13 movie.
Love the original Psycho from 1960. I definitely need to dive into the sequels. Thank you for the inspiration, this video (along with your others) was really great.
Reeker, Midnight Movie, the Toolbox Murders remake, and Laid To Rest are some good overlooked ones that are post-2000s entries. Reeker is basically unavailable outside of physical media for whatever reason.
I always hope that these videos will introduce me to something new. Neon Maniacs is that something and I thank you for it ❤
I needed this video. Thank you
The narration of this person's voice is awesome.
I'd add Hospital Massacre, Tenebre, Just Before Dawn, The Prowler
The Prowler is brutal.
A video on lesser known Gialli would be nice.
Blood rage is almost perfect 👌🏻👌🏻
Nice list … I just need to watch the neon dudes and phantom of the mall 🙏🏻
Just read Fantastic Four Full Circle and decided to finally finish Secret Wars 2015 because of you and as a fellow slasher fan I feel it's a safe bet to trust everything you recommend here.
Thanks Matt!
An excellent list with a few unfamiliar titles I need to check out! 10/10 fricheks
“Pieces” is the only one I saw from this list. I’ve heard of some of these, but never watched them. I’m going to try to find them and give them a try.
Great list!
Enjoy your channel keep them gems coming 📼
13:18 - Okay, been meaning to watch POPCORN for years (maybe even decades) but, with you additional recommendation, I think I'll do so once and for all this week! Also, nice to see Neon Maniacs get some love: not a good movie but still receives an A+ for its ambitious hootspa.
Super Mario brudahs 2 lol jk my personal favorite is Dark night of the scarecrow, it has that great atmosphere that makes it great to watch around Halloween and it feels like an old time ghost story
The last matinee is an exploit of Angustia (1987), which is so really really great and nobody knows this spanish film exists, not even here in Spain.
I’m surprised House on Sorority Row didn’t get a sequel. The Jester costume is just as scary as Jason, Michael and Freddy imo
Flashback and Anatomy two of my favourites
I love love love love love loooooove Happy Birthday to Me
Another rad Matt Draper horror video? Us dang-ass freaks are eating well this year.🤘
Happy Birthday to Me was a fun movie with a cool twist!
Darknight of the Scarecrow is such a great movie, even without the blood and gore!
Pieces is such a cool crazy fun movie!
The House on Sorority Row was a good movie!
Psycho 2 was a good movie, but pales compared with the original!
Neon Manics is a cool movie i wish had actually been finished totally!
Blood Rage is a crazy movie about "not cranberry sauce"!
Amsterdamned was a good movie with a crazy idea!
Phantom of the Mall is a cool movie!
Popcorn is a great movie with some cool kills!
Cherry Falls was a decent movie worth watching!
Never saw Behind the mask
The Last Matinee was a cool film worth watching!
Excellent video! I have to ask, which movie was shown at 1:02 cause that's brutal as heck ^^
Amsterdamned!
The only one I've watched is Behind the Mask. I can also recommend that big time, and everything you said about it is accurate. The last bit isn't as good as the rest but it's still good.
Psycho 2 is my all-time favorite movie!
Psycho 2 is so underrated. I watched 5 times on cable during summer break in 1983. Meg Tilly was already a better actress than her busty older sister. Vera Miles also reappeared after 22 Psycho years!
By the way a great reminder of the tv movie Dark Night of the Scarecrow. Larry Drake before Dr. Giggles. Larry Drake before Darkman (as bad guy Durant).
I love behind the mask
Pieces is INSANE in the best way!
Popcorn is great! My only gripe is the laziness of the last kill. The others were really inventive (love the mosquito one), but they dropped the ball with that smoke bomb attack...
Behind the Mask is a favorite of mine. A must watch if you’re a dang ass freak.
Absolutely begging for a video on Pieces one day!
if you are reading this and haven't seen rise of Leslie Vernon please do yourself a favor and do so after this vid
Matt, if and when you cover the amazing Psycho sequels. Please discuss Robert Bloch’s hugely underrated Psycho II. It’s completely different and I think was heavily borrowed from for Scream 3.
I got popcorn free with a magazine years ago. Obviously i was expecting something beyond terrible but it's become one of my favourites, weird but lucky way to find a movie.
On the subject of Cherry Falls is there any information on an uncut version being released? From what I read Cherry Falls was heavily censored before it was released.
There is a very nice slasher called "Castle Freak". I think it's from 1995. Has an anybody watched it too? It's sooooo underrated
it's hard to find. Stuart Gordon made some good ones in the 80's: Re-Animator and From Beyond (Lovecraft horror ... and I think Castle Freak is based on HP Lovecraft, too). Anyways Castle Freak is a horror movie with the addition of Barbara Crampton. It's gotta be good. Did you ever see Gordon's The Pit and the Pendulum or Dagon (based on Lovecraft). Should be worth seeing if you liked Castle Freak et cetera.
@@user-mu9cw8xe4r No, I haven't seen those yet. But at the Moment I have pentecost holiday, so I have much time to watch all my favourite horror movies and I think I'm gonna watch those two, that you suggested today ;)
Fun fact - Larry Drake who plays the mentality challenged man in Scarecrow is also Dr. Giggles in the film Dr. Giggles and plated a handicapped person in the TV show L.A. Law . He has no handicap but plays mentality challenged people exceptionally well.
There is another birthday themed horror movie in the 80's besides Happy Birthday To Me, It's Bloody Birthday and it tells the story about 4 children being born all at once on an Eclipse! They do not have any supernatural powers like the children from Village Of The Damned or Daimen from The Omen, they have an uncontrollable urge to kill!!!
Some great underated flicks. I remember watching Popcorn back in the day on late night HBO. And there's nothing wrong with pickles eggs, I rather enjoy them,, hehe.
Nice to see Amsterdamned in this list. By the way …Dick Maas is making a sequel this year 😊
I just bought all four of the first Psycho's a couple days ago
I am so happy someone is talking about Dark Night of the Scarecrow. What a creepy and beautifully subtle film.
Yep. Larry was great and durning also good.
That was POLTERGEIST SPOOKY and Scary, not Bloody Gory Scary like Friday The 13th
The house on sorority row was a totally 80s slasher gem! (The remake is good also)
Many of these are not really lesser known for the horror community. Here are some lesser known horror films
1. Killing Spree
2. Sorority House Massacre
3. Offerings
4. The Oracle
5. Doom Asylum
6. A Candle for the Devil
7. Mountaintop Motel Massacre
8. Shredder
9. Darkroom
10. Killer Workout
11. Edge of the Axe
12. Fatal Games
13. Death Screams
14. Evil Laugh
15. Girls Nite Out
16. Blood Hook
17. Night School
18. Splatter University
19. Slaughterhouse
20. Silent Madness
21. Sweet Sixteen
22. The Unseen
23. The Last Slumber Party
23. Video Violence
You should do a Psycho series retrospective since they're so underrated
Thanks for the video! You had some excellent picks on here. Funny thing about Blood Rage - it was originally released earlier; I actually saw it in the movies (oy vey) under the name Nightmare at Shadow Woods. It is just kooky and has some fun gore. Lassiter is insane in this. Dark Night of the Scarecrow I always just remember that Charles Durning was in it. I think I need to rewatch it. I remember NOTHING of the movie other than him! hehehe Psycho 2 is pretty awful, but poor Robert Loggia - that death is brutal. That and the knife to the mouth of poor Vera Miles. Phantom of the Mall still cracks me up - I go around singing the theme song of it (it is terrible) whenever the name is mentioned. Popcorn is in the height of when Jill Schoelen was becoming famous. I saw it in the movies with a friend - at the theater we worked at in South Florida, and the theater was pretty empty - a few people, but the theater had rats and I started a complete ruckus that had NOTHING to do with the film so we just kept laughing throughout most of it. Happy Bday to Me is one of my faves and will always be so. Gruesomely bloody (that poor guy lifting weights!) and starring two tv stars I loved (Melissa Sue Anderson and Soap star Tracey Bregman) and crazy as a bedbug! One of my faves, though, still, no matter how horrible it was (well I think it wasn't THAT bad) is Neon Maniacs! I saw it all alone in a movie theater in a mall in Miami. It was crazy! Loved the killers' costumes and personas. Pieces I only saw on video. It was pretty bloody and all I remember are the body parts. I think it is a bit overrated. HOSR is just okay to me and Behind the Mask is very mundane in my book.
I just found this channel ,had to stop the video at 1:57 so i can watch HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ME first!!!😂😂😂
The first 2 minutes of Night Train to Terror
Have you covered Prom Night 2?
Not yet!
These are all good slasher movies that you mentioned. Is there any chance we'll get a Ultraman or The Omen Retrospective video?
I'd love to cover both sometime
What's your opinion on the Gus Van Sant remake of Psycho, Matt? Follow-up question: is a Psycho retrospective a possibility?
It's one of the strangest remakes ever because it makes itself totally unnecessary. I'd love to cover more Psycho! A few years ago I talked about the original, but going back for the full franchise would be fun.
psycho ii is a rare instance where the sequel far surpasses the original
Happy bday to me is a good movie. and it reminds me of a m night movie.
10:53 Bless you!
I loved popcorn!
My big controversial opinion is that I prefer Psycho 2 over the original (which is also a masterpiece)
The fact you laughed at dick moss is why I love thus channel! Definitely a couple I've not seen and need to check out
I’ve been championing Dark Knight of the Scarecrow for years, glad it’s finally getting the love it deserves… my favorite underrated slasher is Sorority House Massacre 2, such a unique and fun movie
We aren’t talking about Batman’s rival Scarecrow. Rookie mistake.
Have you seen The Editor and if you have what are your thoughts on it?
Heres some beauties:
Next of Kin
Storm Warning
Coffin Rock
Road Games
