Loved watching your video! I do mostly pot gardening myself. I love that you enjoy all the flowers, even the smallest ones. And all the critters and interesting things in the garden, I love them too. I had the largest swallow tail on my laurel tree flowers the other day. He posed so pretty for me. The gardening is coming alive right now, and I have to have foot surgery this coming Tuesday and will be out of commission for a few days. Say a prayer for me. Isn’t it great that we can experience God in all this nature. Have a great week! ❤🌸🍄🪻🦎🌺🐛

Oh, June!!! I’m praying for you to recover quickly from your surgery!!! I’m so glad that you got to see a butterfly in your garden so early in the season! Container gardening is so addictive, isn’t it?!? I love being to move things around! Oh, I hope you are able to prop yourself up by a window to enjoy at the lovely spring happenings while you heal!!! God bless you!!!!!!

Rachel!! I am loving your new garden setup! I am excited to see your brave potless grow area, hopefully the armadillos find someone else’s yard to terrorize 😂. I also am so looking forward to seeing your salvia forest! You will have all the bees and butterflies visiting it! I love love loved seeing all the different butterflies that have already been visiting but I gotta say not loving that giant spider 😂 you are braver than me poking it with a stick 😅

LOL! I do feel brave! Every day I go out to the garden steeling myself for the inevitable, but so far, everything has been intact! Haha! And YOU were braver than I have been and you crawled into that cabinet with spiders!!!!! And even fixed things while spiders were around!!!!! - Oh, yes! The butterflies are showing up! I’m so surprised and happy to see them whenever the sun is shining! They are a precious gift from God!!!!!

Really fun video today and so glad to see you and your garden. Lots of 'friends' in it today and I love how you show them without judgement - I'm terrified of spiders but can appreciate their value and how gorgeous their web is, too. Just not on me! I do like snakes and had them as pets when I was little - much to my mother's horror. She was extremely supportive as I kept the tiny green garter snake in my bedroom and it slept in my dolls hair next to the bed. I took it for walks every day in my wagon thinking it would catch a fly - so much for my young brain being of value LOL. When it died it wasn't replaced. (I had accidentally rocked over it while listening to my records). She even helped me bury it and say a prayer. We lived across the street from the state zoo and she would never go in the lion house and was even afraid of horses and deer - but she took us over whenever we wanted to see them but just stayed out of their enclosure. I admired her willingness to let us enjoy what she fearfully did not. Good mothering so I can grow up loving animals and even bats which she let me pet as long as I didn't 'catch' it to bring inside. Seems they liked to stick to the trees down low where I could reach. When she visited me on our 10 acres, she had to go inside while I rode the horse. Bless her!

LOL, Mary! Your pet snake story is so heartwarming!!! Your mom was brave and kind!!!!! I’m sorry that you accidentally rocked over it! I know that was an upsetting thing to happen! Oh, but wasn’t having a tiny pet cemetery fun?!? We kids in the neighborhood relished burying animals with such morbid zeal that I’m surprised that none of us grew up to be undertakers! - I hope you are having a wonderful pre-spring springtime!!!!

So great to see you Rachel!❤ Wow! I’m so impressed with all of your cuttings! What an exciting idea to make a salvia forest! Can’t wait to see it grow & flourish. Things look so good planted in the ground. I’ll pray that falcon/hawk might help oversee your garden keeping the armadillos at bay.
I drove thru AL on I-10 heading to & from New Orleans last week. Met up with my oldest daughter for a Disney cruise to Mexico. (So fun!) I had hoped to stop at a nursery (Abbots Greenhouse) in Foley on the way back but the weather didn’t cooperate (rained all the way home). Was so disappointed but to make myself feel better, lol, I reminded myself it wasn’t the most ideal time of year for nursery shopping.
All I’ve been doing here at home is weeding, fertilizing & mulching. Haven’t finished mulching yet…just used up the 4 bags I had left from last year. Need about 20 more bags. I started some seeds yesterday but not near as many as you. I’m going to also scatter some seeds after April 15.
So far the neighbors’ culvert has worked & made such a huge difference. I also had gutters installed on the backside of the house for extra rain control. Tomorrow the men come out to add support to the one back wall on my foundation. I can’t wait until it’s done so I can put it all behind me. Geez.
    Hugs from your GA friend❤

Oh, Linda! I’m so glad that you got to have a fun vacation with your daughter!!! I haven’t been to Abbott’s this year myself. It’s hard for me to get to go because they are only open on the days that I work. Today I’m going to a new-to-me nursery, Slay’s in Elberta. I’ll let you know if it’s worth the drive! - LOL about the hawk keeping the armadillos at bay! I bet it would eat a baby armadillo! - Thank God that the neighbor’s culvert is working!!! I know that a huge relief for you and your garden! - Oh, yeah! You’re gonna be gardening at full tilt very soon! This is going to be the best year ever!!! God bless you and yours!!!!!

Hi Rachel, so lovely to see you. I so enjoy your videos and always watch them a couple of times. You manage to film such amazing creatures, ones that I've never seen before. Yes you are brave, but I'm happy you're taking the risk of planting directly into the soil. It's funny because I've always wanted lambs ear too, maybe it will be this year and I love that lemon balm sedum you have, another must have, and I have the perfect place for it. My garden is pretty at the moment, especially on those rare sunny days. The spring flowers are popping open, the greens and tidiness of the awakening garden in March, makes everything look shiny and new. I love this time of year. Happy gardening Rachel 😊

I’m your neighbor in Pensacola! Thank you for posting videos! You have helped me start my garden and I raised butterflies for the first time last year. I tried red salvia and it didn’t take but the mystic spires is doing well! I put in Dahlias in for the first time this year and they are all popping up. I keep trying to find natives in our area but it’s been so hard. Keep up the videos!

They are the ones who sold me my very first salvia leucantha. - That’s so wonderful about your dahlias!!! You’re gonna love ‘em!!!

    Hello friend!
My husband was watching with me, and soon after, I dragged him to the nursery (I needed his big car) and he was all, “Look! Lambs ears like Rachel has. Do we need some?” (We didn’t get any- they rot when we get “regular” Houston rainfall. It’s either drought or will-it-ever-stop-raining here in Houston.🙄)
Oh, that fern leaf lavender is dreamy! It hates the Houston weather too! I’ll have to live vicariously through you. (Again)
lol “If it’s red, it will not be able to stay here.” I feel like our aversion to red in the garden is perhaps the first building block of our friendship.
    James Galway 💕💕💕
I’m so glad you’re taking your chances with the armadillos! I hope they steer clear of your beauties!
I’ve got a few clumps of blue eyed grass that have finally gotten established. They would be part of the “things I grow because I know Rachel” tour. Should I make one. Not a bad idea!
Oooh! SALVIA FOREST! I can’t wait to see it!
I had no idea petunias would survive freezing temps! So pretty!
I love lyre leaf sage. It is finally seeding itself around the garden for me. And popping up in random places 30 feet from the parent plant! I’m going to let them take over in my shady spots! I’m like, “have at it!!”
I learned the same thing with seed starting mix! Your seeds look amazing. Isn’t gomphrena satisfying to grow from seed??
I’m so glad your EBS emerged! I finally had my last one come out. Number 13! That moth pupa is the reason I try to convince people to “leave the leaves” in the fall- cover for overwintering creatures.
    That spider is awesome!
I love that you show cool stuff like fungus and creatures in addition to flowers and butterflies. Sometimes on my Houston gardening Facebook group I feel like everybody just wants to kill everything but the actual flowers. “Will it hurt the butterflies if I spray insecticide all over my plants and my lawn?” Umm… yes. And Heaven forbid anyone sees a snake the size of a pencil! The TERROR! 🤦🏼‍♀️
Thanks for the awesome tour! 💕

LOL, Jo, about growing things because I grow them because my list of what I want that you have is so long I have to roll it up into a scroll!!! - Yes, our color palette is the foundation of our friendship, but your sense of humor is the glue that holds it together! You are hilarious and always making me laugh. I especially like it when you say, “Look at this little business over here!” when something is surprising or strange!

I just love your videos and I look forward to seeing what you've been growing. I divided my lemon ball sedum from last year and created a half moon shape under one of my Rose-of-Sharon. I just love how it Glows! No sign of my passion flower vines returning and none of the seeds are germinating yet. I still have hope. I had to put the Mandivillas and Columbine back into the garage last night due to another freeze warning. I'm holding off on buying anything else. My bluebirds started to build a nest in the bluebird house yesterday! 😀🥰 I'll be searching for coral nymph salvia this spring! I want to try to grow that. I can't wait to see your salvia garden in full bloom! Happy gardening. 🙋‍♀️🌱🌷🌻🐛🦋

@@gulfcoastbutterflygardening Yes, Mon and Tues night will be in the low 30's! I think we hit 80 today. It was wonderful. I got pots ready for new plants or seeds. I put the caladium bulbs back into the garden pots. I uncovered a few more hostas. I created my first board on Pinterest with photos from my gardens from last year. I was trying to figure out what is in some of my pots! Thank goodness I take a lot of pictures. This year I'm doing better and putting notes on the photos I take. Our Redbud tree was in full bloom with the sun shining on it. I took a picture. We have storms heading our way, so that might be the end of her bloom cycle. Thank you for the information about the coral nymph salvia. Keep growing. 😀🌱🌷🐦🐛🦋

Thanks, Jacqueline!!! I’m so pleased that the blue-eyed grass even started blooming this week! They are such darlings! - Oh, my pots have been mostly serendipitously snagged. About 6 years ago Ross, the store that mostly sells clothes, had a bunch of pots for extremely reasonable prices. I’m talking $20 for the biggest down to $7 for the smallest. I went to every Ross from Birmingham, AL to Jacksonville, FL and bought the best ones. Also, we have a store in Foley, AL called Old Time Pottery, and they had really good deals on pots, too. They still have pots, but every thing is more expensive now. The resin pots that I have were bought from Wal-mart and Lowe’s and Home Depot at the end of the season when they were marked down 50%. - I’m so thrilled about your new gardening adventures!!! Your new arbor is lovely!!! - God bless you and yours!!!!!!

Hi Rachel, I'm up the road from you in Foley. This will be my second summer here .i had an enormous supertunia bubble gum which just couldn't handle the heat and humidity. How do you get your petunias to survive our summers?

    • @gulfcoastbutterflygardening
      @gulfcoastbutterflygardening  Před 5 měsíci

Oh, Sue! That’s so cool that you are so close by!!! - This past summer was the most brutal summer that I have ever endured down here. It was NOT typical! Y’all may have had a little more rain in Foley than we did down here, but I bet it was not enough. I’m guessing that even your supertunias said, “I’d rather die than spend another day doing this!” LOL! - All I can say is that I watered mine a lot, and even that didn’t save mine this year. Last year or the year before, it’s all starting to run together, I discovered that I could over winter my supertunias. All I did was give them an extreme cut back and then I put them in my potting shed with the clear roof and keep them damp until the threat of freeze was over. They came back and were so lovely, but not as giant as the year before. - I had some regular petunias that I plunked into a coupls of pots in the fall and they survived the freezes from this winter, and that surprised me! I guess I am always underestimating petunias because they are surprising me left and right!
