  • HOW TO Custom Profile Inkjet Paper with X-Rite i1Studio!
    This video will walk you through all of the steps necessary to custom profile your inkjet paper using X-Rite i1Studio Color Spectrophotometer. How to print out the profile in the most efficient way on paper larger than 8.5 x 11 inches, best techniques to deploy when profiling paper. And the lighting setup that you should view your prints out on.
    UPDATE: the guide shown in this video will work for Calibrite Devices and ColorChecker Studio (ccStudio) as well. There may be some GUI and branding changes, however, the software fundamental is still the same.
    If you are unfamiliar X-Rite Transitioned this consumer product portfolio to a newly formed company called Calibrite, which is short for Calibration Done Right, on July 1st, 2021.

    Hello Art, after years of wasting paper, ink and time, doing my head in when the colour print changes to what the final test print was, I now find out I need this calibration tool.
    I have an, Epson XP-960 photo printer, it uses 6 colour Claria inks.
    Thank you for using an Epson print to demonstrate this tool and software. Kind regards, Gary

    Thanks for all of your great work. Could you give us some sort of a feel for the difference that we might see between an icc paper profile produced by the i1 Studio vs a custom profile.
    Relatedly you have often mentioned that the Calibrate colorimeters are super for monitor calibration to the i1 Studio. What sort of a difference might we see in the end result from the different devices?
    Again, thanks for all that you do.

    • @ArtIsRight
      @ArtIsRight  Před rokem +2

      "Could you give us some sort of a feel for the difference that we might see between an icc paper profile produced by the i1 Studio vs a custom profile."
      profiles produced with i1Studio are considered to be custom profiles. Note that i1Studio or ccStudio is an entry level spectrophotometer so there only so much that it can do. The next device up in the line cost 5-6 times as much and that is the i1Pro 3, which is an amazing spectrophotometer that comes really close to the Barbieri which is a super high end spectrophotometer. This said, what you will generally see with custom profile in general is better color, contrast, tonal range. Although the changes that you will see with i1Studio will be limited at best vs canned (manufacture) provided profiles.
      "Relatedly you have often mentioned that the Calibrate colorimeters are super for monitor calibration to the i1 Studio. What sort of a difference might we see in the end result from the different devices?"
      Colorimeter are better in many sense when it comes to entry level spectrophotometer such as the i1Studio. The thing to note about Colorimeter is that it is trained in a way by the measuring curved of higher end color spectrophotometer. The thing is that spectro takes much longer to calibrate. And when it comes to colorimeter vs i1studio, you are not going to see much variation. However, colorimeter vs i1Pro 3, you'll get better ∆e. But then you have to ask what are you chasing? Perfect Colors? It does not exist, hence the need for ∆e to measure variations. And if colorimeter can get ∆e below 2 to start with, which is already beyond what human vision can see in 99% of circumstances. Then the question is does it matter really, knowing there are variations everywhere in life.

    Being a bit economical, I am using a single sheet of A4 to make a profile with neutralisation for black and white (1 + 2 sheets) by shrinking the patches down to only 1/4 of the paper size (A4) (using the printer driver to print 4 sheets on on 1 page). I made a custom ruler to guide the colormunki (3 mm reading hole) over these patches) and it works very well: no difference compared to using 3 sheets of A4 to generate the same quality of profile. In the end I have one free area available on which I print a test image to see if the profile is properly generated.

      Quite drastically different also different price point as well. i1Studio (ccStudio) now because of X-Rite transition to Calibrite, is a consumer product. Does it do well, yes but it lacks a lot of control the i1Pro 3 from X-Rite has. The measurement sensor and LED inside the i1Pro 3 is much better than the studio as well.

    Great video -- I recently changed printers to a canon imageprograf 1000 from an Epson printer. My problem is that I have a lot of Epson fine art paper. I also have an X-Rite color checker studio. Epson does not offer a nice chart like Carson provides for setting Epson paper on a canon machine. Plus, canon paper selection is quite limited. For example, I love Epson Legacy fiber 19 mil satin matt paper. How can I inform the printer about this type of paper

      Match the closest recommended Epson paper setting to Canon, Matte to matte for instance and then use ColorChecker Studio software from Calibrite to generate a custom icc profile for the Epson Paper when printing through Canon printer.

    • @ArtIsRight
      @ArtIsRight  Před rokem

      That is dependent on the paper. You can look up the paper spec and it will tell you. For Canon OEM paper, I think they group the paper type in the driver that make it somewhat obvious which ink set to use. And many time when you choose the paper, the driver will force you to use the correct black ink anyways.

    I'm really impressed with your videos and have learned so much. However, I do have a question about profiling, for instance, if you download a profile from Hahnemuhl for a specific paper, then it's available after placing it in the ColorSync/profiles folder, how does that work with creating a custom profile for a specific paper if you can download it? Is there a reason to use one instead of the other? Thanks! ( I have the I1Studio device and am anxious to try it out on paper so I can start printing with my P800)

    • @ArtIsRight
      @ArtIsRight  Před 2 lety +2

      that is a generic profile from the paper manufacture and has nothing to do with the custom profile. they are separate files and used separately. One has nothing to do with the other, you don't need the generic to create a custom. You can use either. some prefer custom because it is tailor to the output of your printer and not a generic printer output. Most of the time it is more accurate and produced better colors and black and white. Since you have to device I would just test it and do a comparison.

I transferred the same ICC profile over to my new Mac and it prints completely different. I've tried all manufacturer's ICC profiles with similar paper types, and some are close but they are all off. I had no idea this was possible. I think my next step is to rent an X-Rite i1Studio Spectrophotometer and make my own ICC Profile 🤞🤞🤞I really hope this helps. Or do you know if it's possible to create an ICC profile for my new computer based on my old MacBook ICC profile? Or do you recommend any companies that can create ICC Profiles for you?

      Watch this czcams.com/video/U6NOaDi2DQ0/video.html it could be that True Tone is not turned off. Also you should be using the reference mode which will help a lot, I have a video on that too, you might have seen it already. About icc profile it should be a 1:1 translation, meaning they should work the same way. A couple of things that I would make sure before you go out to buy or rent the device is that you are installing the correct drivers czcams.com/video/cRqNmqFtUXc/video.html Mac like to use AirPrint which is a generic driver and it lack many of the granular control of the printer. You need to get the manufacture driver to get this to work properly. From here print with color management on the printer off. We are talking about optimization, better contrast, neutral colors and etc. But if you are happy with canned profile, I would just stick with that. Since at the fundamental, ccStudio (this device) is more of an entry device anyways, it will be better but it won't be as good as a profile produced with higher end spectrophotometers that can cost 5-6 times as much.

I noticed after I did all my editing and if I assign the new profile instead of using the default, there is a color shift and now I'm ready to print and don't know what I should do. Do I have to go back and fix all the colors or will they be ok. I guess I should have asked this before hand. I'm actually using another printing program called Print Tool but that shouldn't matter. It's a very convenient layout.

      I would mostly go by texture, thickness does not matter as much (considering most of these paper substrate are thicker to start with when it comes to fine art paper - if you are printing on Japanese Rice Paper that is another story). As far as paper make up, that mostly has to do with the coating, what kind of coating does it have that may change your selection slithy but not much, aka, matte based paper would use matted ink, no other way about it.

      6. What cable are you using to connect your BenQ to your computer for the display signal, HDMI, Display Port, etc.
      7. If you are using USB-C skip this question, if not, are you using a USB link cable between your laptop and display?
      8. If you are using Mac was this a clean install or was the OS upgraded from a previous version at any point (I.e. From Mojave 10.13.x to Catalina 10.14.x)? Or was this Mac restore from a back up, time machine or other wise?

And yes there's an advanced black and white mode but that translate to Epson doing a guess on the black and white output based on the image and that will change with every image that you feed it. There's no consistency. So don't use Epson system and like I said you can try a B&W icc. But if you look closely at the color & BW icc profile creating in i1Studio they look identical not sure if you'll gain much. But you can give it a try and let me know. There's probably nuances that you'll see but overall it might not be worth the time and resources.

    it is possible to export the icc. profile in an other rip. my rip software for the printer has a separate folder for icc profiles. it does not automatically recognize them.

      If my memory serves me correctly, RIP by pass icc profile. I have to look into that again. But if your RIP has an icc profile folder you should be able to put it in there and get it to work. What RIP are you using & printer?

      I did briefly show it toward the end, but evaluation from camera capture does very little to demonstrate the point. What the camera can capture is way less than human perception.
