Great advice guys. I literally have to take a deep breath after stepping onto the approach and telling myself “relax” and most of the time it helps.

My trick I started using is really focusing more on my balance arm. It allows me to just forget about trying to throw the ball and letting me focus on my position and form at the line.

I'm a coach working with kids, I usually tell them to "make a full length approach with a full swing, but throw the ball as slow as you can". This usually makes them relax a lot and loosen up the swing big time.

I’ve watched a lot of bowling tutorial videos over the years. A lot! The best advise was from Randy Peterson about creating a pendulum arm swing using gravity. Gravity being the key word here because it’s a constant, it never changes. I’ve never heard anyone else talk about it. I wish I did sooner. 😁

Practiced this yesterday and implimented the relaxing of my hand/shoulder during set up it in league today. I found myself putting more ball weight into my off hand which helped relax my ball hand fingers and thumb. Shot a solid 590, 13 pins above avg, and felt much smoother throughout my approach. Watched this video many times over last 2 weeks and today I actually executed it over 2.5 games in league. I’d call it the set and go option. Instead of trying to find a time to start my push away I just get set for 1/2 a second dropped in and leg it swing. It enabled my feet to be in time and allows me to stay down at the line. Just have to let the ball hang up and wait on it. :) Thanks for that Stuff !

I've only been bowling 3 years but have put in countless hours and 15-30 games a week. I'm an engineer so can over complicate things, to say the least. Something clicked when I saw this video. I definitely think your video is broken because I haven't shot any more 300's and/or 800's!😂 Although I am EXPONENTIALLY more consistent. Even my bad days have been 625+ since watching this. Crazy thing is when I'm throwing the ball relaxed, my speed and revs go up significantly. Once again, I'm a long time fan and I think you guys are some of the best ambassadors for the sport! Keep at it! May see you guys in KC in September if you're doing the KC open.

I bowled a lot of years before I found out not to pull down and generate power during the downswing. So I finally just let gravity do the work and make the ball drop, and when my arm was about at the 6 o'clock position, that's when I used my muscle power to accelerate my swing forward through the release. It helped a lot. Everything is a work in progress. These videos have helped me a ton. Am I a good bowler now? I'm not even in the same time zone with any of these pro bowlers. But every bit of info helps make me a tiny bit better, and that's really appreciated.

Relaxing, letting your arm move naturally, not thinking about it so much, really helps get into the zone you're referring to in this video.

Really good to hear/see you teach finesse. I am a Canadian five-pin player who used to drill 10-pin balls in a mixed house. I played both five and ten and my experience is that I could never be effective in the same day playing 10-pin first and then 5-pin. My 10-pin ball was 15.99999 lbs and the maximum weight 5-pin ball is 3lbs 10 oz. The reason is that the body needed more sensitivity to feel the lighter 5-pin ball. My point? If you can teach your body to be natural and relaxed with ~3.5 lbs, being natural and relaxed with a 10-pin ball was much easier. I also also used to coach that you should be able to feel a tug at your shoulder if your arm was really swinging naturally. But .... you guys are the actual pros ....

Look, I’m Mr Grab, it’s like a thing for me
but once I figured how to not pull down on my shots, I really stopped grabbing it most of the time. Pretty much when I grab it I either hold onto the ball too long when I push off or pull down on my swing. Now, at least I have a symptom of what is happening I can self appraise and at l can attempt to get myself on track. Just fixing this aspect on my game alone was a huge breakthrough, went from 201 to 218 almost overnight. Meaningful practice is a wonderful thing!

This is the best Brad and Kyle video so far.! Learning to relax your hand effortlessly is a large milestones/accomplishment for a Bowler. As a golfer there is a similar sentiment, which suggests that you hold the club as loosely as you can, and it works! I believe that what they’re getting at here is that you have to learn to let the ball go on the backswing so that you can allow it to release on the forward swing effortlessly, and consistently, with speed!

I was a scratch bowler back in the early 90s, but I quit and started playing golf. The key to a good golf swing is to make a proper backswing and then just letting the swing happen without forcing it, also you need to drop your lead shoulder a bit to create as long a flat spot at the bottom as possible. When I recently started bowling again, I just naturally started rolling the ball the same way. I'm not quite back to my old average, but I feel that when I'm back there, I'll be a lot more consistent.

I stumbled into figuring this out a few weeks ago. The way I thought about it is as soon as I feal the go weightless in the back swing I use the pushoff to move my body forward. As the body goes forward it pushes the ball into my hand. Then I just stay tucked under the ball and guid it to the release point. I gained 2.5 mph and more revs and almost no strength. Was doing great then my slide shoe stopped sliding lmao. Can't wait for league.

My biggest problem was being grabby at the bottom. It sounds like a similar thought at the bottom might be helpful for you. Good luck and bowl well!

I got rid of my push away all together this year. Best thing I have done. I take the approach keep my elbow in and palm turned up hand under the ball. Then as I start my approach I just drop the ball. I let it swing back not raising it much higher than the natural swing plane. Then as I come through the ball I will verry how much I rotate my had just before release depending on condition but I try to stay more behind and under the ball. Then my big thing that helped my accuracy too is trying to keep the ball as close to my slide ankle as possible. Both of these things changed my game for the better. I had a recent injury and not able to finish summer league but I was doing a 4 game trio on a sport shot this summer and I had my second ever 300 and only six weeks after my first one,

FYI, your momentum and "lag" you are talking about, is EXACTLY the same in the golf swing actually. I have been playing golf at a high level for almost 30 years. I am a scratch player who holds records at a couple of courses. You will find that in most sports that require a swinging type motion, that effortless "lag" is extremely important, not just for accuracy but for power as well. It's a matter of building and storing potential energy (creating kinetic energy) and then releasing that energy at the right time. In the golf swing, that energy is actually released automatically at the bottom of your swing arch (if you let it happen naturally and automatically). I believe the bowling swing is very much like this as well. Just like your bowling swing, in a golf swing the thing everyone wants to do is "pull from the top", and it is not an easy thing to overcome. Even pro golfers are still often plagued with this natural tendency to want to "get things going" and pull from the top. I can see where the bowling swing is EXACTLY this same situation and I fully understand why it is important NOT to allow that to happen. I have gotten pretty good at not pulling from the top in my golf swing (only took me 10 million practice balls to do it) but I am working on it now with my bowling swing, and I still have a tendency to want to pull from the top, even though I have trained myself well not to do it with my golf swing. It is just a natural thing your brain wants to do. You have to train it not to do it. Great videos guys!!! .. just love your stuff!

Kinda similar to using the earth’s gravity for your swing. Also I felt that swing on league night when I threw around 150 in the first two games. At some point during that 3rd game, I felt that natural swing coming towards me , and I had 8 strikes in a row before leaving a stone 9 to end the game, finishing up with 269. That game alone got to my average at 180. I was way below my average the first two games, but got to my 180 average after the 269 game.

I have yet to hear or understand how does it feel when the ball is released into the push away is it hanging of your thumb fingers etc.. because at this point is when I usually get grabby with the thoughts that I am going to lose the ball on the way down into the backswing

Definitely, one of the things that was pointed out in a recent analysis of Belmonte's game, is how little effort he exerts loading up the shot. It enables him to save that energy for the bottom of the swing where he can do more with it. With the natural revs and power of two-handed bowling, you really don't need to try to force more power. Happy bowling to you.

Hey guys, thank you for this video. Last night in league I found that when I relaxed and let the swing happen the ball location improved. Any chance you can make a video and explain and show how you release the ball? Specifically the "relaxed" or "yo-yo" or "snap" release. I'm really struggling to get shape or the correct spin on the ball, it seems like when I try this I'm throwing really flat. Thanks

I use a three step approach and have a very short backswing. I consistently throw between 15 and 17 MPH when I throw with no spin to get a straight ball path. When I put spin on it to make it hook, my ball speed drops to around 12-13 MPH.

    @jah9253 Pƙed 2 lety +1

One thing that perplexes me a bit is that the 1 handers that throw high revs tend to have their elbow bent (like EJ) before release and I feel like you have to muscle your swing to get in that position. I understand why it creates higher revs, but when I think about it, I don't feel like it's a loose and natural action.

Very interesting you guys chose this topic. My ppl's have been telling my to stop grabbing and pushing and this brings things into thought.
I have a problem with high back swing which causes slightly more lag time and my feet are always trying to determine my release and I start grabbing at the ball to force it through. I've got my work cut out for me moving forward.

Thanks guys for a very informative video! I always strain a muscle or two trying to force the ball down lane. The first few weeks I do great I’m relaxed and bowling really good. I always blow up my average by doing this which is fine but the lane conditions at the house I bowl in change from medium oil to light oil. This drastically changes the way my ball hooks into the pocket. So I start forcing my throw. Should I get a ball with less hooking potential?

My left hip starts to hurt severely, and I cannot seem to get my wrist and hand to do much because it’s too heavy. I’m 180lbs and 46 years old. Should I go with a much lighter ball to start, or just keep working with the heavy ball until I get stronger?

I'm getting back into the sport after an extended break, and one thing I just learned is that I've been stopping wrong my entire time; I've been planting my whole foot instead of balancing on my sole to slide, then using my heel to break. Additionally, I tend not to get very low, and instead toss the ball from about a foot up.
Are there any drills specifically for improving slide balance and posture, or would you just suggest doing one-step for that?

One step helped alot then progress to 2 3 and 4 or 5 whatever you prefer keeping that deep knee bend and posting every shot. That's my weakness is posting after my accident where I broke my back, hurts but I can now after lots of work get into decent consistent positions at the line after freaking hundreds of reps doing that progression. Good luck!! Also just for posterity, being up some at release isn't end of world type thing just so you're consistency is there. Be solid and posted when you release...
