- DIY install of Synchrotech Carbon Synchro's into a EP3 5 speed manual trans. Video is kinda long but detailed to help anyone that may watch it.
If you need a replacement 2nd gear for EP3, they are discontinued. Synchrotech sells them for $195.
OEM trans fluid is available on my site... hondaresource.c...

might just be the best install video on youtube.
I just bought an ep3 that grinds real hard into 3rd unless you double clutch it, or first unless youre at a dead stop and have had the clutch depressed for about 2 seconds. Going to be tackling this exact same project, most likely installing the exact same parts as well, and im honestly mad impressed with this video, i was concerned about trying to find a how to with this but honestly i almost feel like i could do it without even referencing the video after this. Fantastic job
You just saved me from spending thounsands for a new trans. Thankyou!! Mine went out yesterday.
best of luck getting it fixed
Thanks for putting in the effort to make this. I'm currently replacing the synchros with synchrotech in my 6 speed /lsd in my 3.5 J swapped Acura EL 😎
Hey man, thank you so much for making this video. This video will enable me to rebuild my transmission without any mechanical background, much love
Just make sure you put the metal rings on the synchros
Video is great, made me realise I am going to pay a Honda specialist garage to do this for me
Amazing step by step video and f the press everyone doesn't have one and even me who has one barely use it ever so makes for a much more realistic step by step ty
The press is definitely easier. Actually just did this on a k AWD trans today
This is good. Great video. Better than others I've seen so far.
Just make sure you install the metal rings on the synchros.
Excellent Video!

Any tips I gotta pull my 93 5 speed back apart right now 😞
This video made me want to become a mechanic thanks school starts in April I’ll post again in a few months and see what happened
update?
Thanks for the video!
Got a second transmission I'm going to rebuild with this video and swap them out and rebuild the other one as a backup. :)
Heck yeah! Just don't forget the metal rings that go on the synchros
I have a crunchy second gear & loud bearings that need to be replaced on my EP3. This video is great. I will definitely be referencing this video when I pull apart my transmission. Thank you !
Awesome!
This is the best video I’ve ever seen for a transmission rebuilt, but bro, why didn’t you torque nothing down the only thing
Thank you bro video is great lol you got into every detail and that’s what I like keep it up.
many thanks for the explanation on what to look for in the wear of the 2nd gear. I am just about to open up an RSX X2M5 trans right now.
@10:10... right as you're making the point about keeping everything in order, but upside down... one of the collars underneath the gear you have in your hand actually flips upside down without you noticing it (I think). I hope it either didn't matter, or you noticed on the re-assemble.
Awesome video, about to change mine. Getting a second gear grind
Gonna use this vid to guide me with my trans. Never done anything with a transmission but I think I got it
Just make sure you put the metal rings back on the synchros. I think I missed it in this video.
Great video!!! I have the transmission that comes out of the k20z3 added this video to my collection.. right now I have to take mine apart I think the gear case seal broke away , or possibly the input shaft seal the one you have to basically tear down the entire transmission to replace one seal.
I need to rebuild my transmission for my 2013 accord EXL, second and 3rd gear grinds bad during cold start. Have to warm up the car for better experience with shifting. still grinds but like 13% of the time while warmed up. I cant seem to find the model or the transmission but would like to get this thing rebuilt. I was told by a tuner shop that they do ATF for 100 miles to lube the syncros then change back to manual fluid. I need to do the same for my truck.
fantastic video, thanks.
Did you purposely leave off the synchro springs? I imagine it will still operate without them but won’t have that definite “click” into gear etc. nice indepth vid , thank you for this 👍
No, I realized it after I posted this video, took it back apart and fixed it
For future reference i believe you have the spring washer that goes on mainshaft wrong
thank you
Hello, i am thinking to change synchros, i ve seen some people had problems with synchrotech, the carbon fails etc, please can you share your experience sofar?
I appreciate this video!🙏🏽 Subscribed!
Thanks for the sub!
very useful video man, i will definitely keep this in one my favorite for future reference!!!!
2002 ep3 transmission was operating great. Replaced the input shaft bearing. Now Im locked out of 5th and reverse. The only issue I had was the 5th gear sleave slipped off past the top of the syncro. Does it only go on one way? I slipped it back on . Maybe I screwed up the reverse idler? Not sure what I did. Please help. See pic below.
Hello, i was wondering if the synchro has to go in a certain spot or are they all the same? It wasnt specified in the video, but just wanted to make sure before I do this to mine. In the video you said the 2 big ones go onto the couter shaft. Could the other 3 just be put anywhere since theyre the same?
Hey when I assemble my gears together and have everything ready to slap on the outer case when I put the transmission into gear it won’t spin but if I were to put it to 5-6 it’ll spinn
Can you reference the part number for the synchrotech 2nd gear assy? Please and thank you
A brass drift is good to use when you’re tapping that on @ 22:20
🔥🔥🔥💯
i need a six speed transmission , 4k rpm in 5th gear at 80 mph is ridiculous smh drives me nuts 😂
I swear bro shit pisses me off🤣
The type s really isn’t much difference. Just about the same
8th gen civic you’re at
3.5k @70mph 6th gear.
Hi, I have 07 Accord with 5 speed manual ( K24). Every gear is a battle to shit from 1st, 2nd...and reverse. The clutch is 6 month old and I just replaced the slave cylinder. But same problem HARD TO SHIFT FROM GEAR TO GEAR.
HELP..HELP😢😢😢
Great disassembly and reassembly video. 21:19 Why not use the portable pull-press to press the gears back into position on the counter shaft?
I'm not sure. I have a press I use for assembly and disassembly now.
Great video! Definitely going to subscribe. Keep up the great work.
Just make sure you put the metal rings on the new synchros!
Thank you for this video. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Hey bud great video ! I need a new 2nd gear for my ep3 trans
Synchrotech is the only place I know of. My contact dissolved
@@hondaresource ok thank you
This is awesome. Thank you
Very helpful video tanks . Hey do u think a k24 transmission fit on k20 block Goin to ep3 civic chassis
YOUR THE MAN!!!
Just make sure you put the rings on the synchros. I missed it when making this video, but I went back and fixed it
Is the 2003 civic SI stick shift transmission any good for K24 or should I get another one?
Ep3 trans is fine
Thanks for the info..
S2000, gonna replace 2nd gear synchro, others if need be. Where you located lol I'd love your help
Would this apply to a 2006 civic si with the k20z3
hey in need 1st 2 and 3rd gear synchro for my 2014 accord 2.4l 6 speed transmission its making funny sounds grinding plus it pops out of gear in traffic like wtf please help me
Hey. I'm rebuilding mine k20z3 transmission. And got everything mock up on bench. My 1-4 gears and neutral is easy to spin. But my 5th, 6th and reverse is a bit harder to turn by hand. Is that normal or what am I'm to look for?
Awesome video. I currently have my 6 speed apart and I’m changing the bearings and seals whilst installing an mfactory lsd.
I don’t suppose we could have a chat about the shimming of the gearbox?
shimming for the gear stack or the diff?
@@hondaresource the actual stack and diff. I’m installing an mfactory race pack helical lsd and shimming everything that needs it
You misplaced the mainshaft washers, the cone goes towards the bearing, then upper to the mainshaft the flat one.
Bummer. I made a couple errors in the video, but I rectified them later at no charge to the customer.
@@hondaresource you should consider to write it in the description, as maybe someone could use your video to do a reassembly and put in the washers in the wrong way.
Yes, the cone shape washer "dome" faces to the bearing and the flat washer goes to the gear on the main shaft. I have checked and confirmed in the manual.
Дякуємо!
Great video!
Thank you
Hi. Can i put the guts of a 6speed lsd ( k20z3) inside the ep3 trans case? So i can keep the ep3 VSS and not have to rewire for CSS. Thanks in advance.
Yes. You'll need to put the speed ring on the diff in order to run the ep3 vss
@@hondaresource Can I reuse the same speed ring from the ep3?
Has anyone done this on the 2g eclipse transmission
Great how to man!
Glad you think so!
That's a good video got one here doesn't work how can I check it
Just pull it apart and look at the synchros / gears / sliders etc
Do you get any kind of deal or referral code through Synchrotech? Currently about to have my APG6 Honda trans rebuilt
Unfortunately I don't
I have 2007 Honda Accord six speed gearbox but it’s not letting me shift into first gear or fifth gear with the car off or on any ideas what can be my problem ?
Possibly shift selector in the trans or stretched shifter cables
So basically the same process for j30a4 6 speed?
I've never done a J series trans but b, d, h, and k are all similar.
What synchro set do I need for a CRV trans? Doing an AWD build and looking to refresh things. Also switching to a 4.38 FD so need the 40mm counter shaft bearing.
I would check with synchrotech but I'm 99% sure its the same a base 02-04 rsx
Thanks a lot bud
Just make sure you reinstall the metal rings on the synchros. I didn't do it in this video, but corrected it after the fact.
Thanks!
Thank you! Just make sure to put the metal rings on each of the synchros.
How’s the reliability on the synchrotech synchros? I know oem honda is usually the way to go because if reliability but the synchrotech ones are just the first that pop up for sale on many websites they seem readily available. Just wondering should have any issues using them rather than oem?
Can't go wrong with synchrotech
so you did not put any snap rings on any of the syncros and that little piece that you did not know what it was is a bushing those tabs had to sit down intro second gear do yourself a huge favor and get a complete service manual or have someone else do your work for you
I realized the snap ring mistake afterwards and corrected it. Its the mr2 video on my channel. Thank you for pointing that out though!
Thank you for pointing that out regarding the bushing. First I thought I did it incorrectly, but now I know I didn't. The bushing needs to be installed last and then the 3rd gear. Otherwise great video overall! :
hi i have a euro r 6 speed transmisión (tsx) can i use a rsx shifter by only replacing the selector? thanks in advance
The selectors are not interchangeable. I'm not sure exactly what you will need to run an RSX shifter, but I think it's just a different bracket.
Hey man I’ve been having an issue on my rsx type s 6 speed tranny.. basically goes into gears but not 6th and it won’t move on any gear it only moves in nuetral which I don’t get, if I let off the clutch on nuetral it wants to stall. I’ve changed the clutch(full kit) tob and pilot. And this issue is still there.
sounds like you have a broken shift selector, fork, or something associated with selection of the gears. Sounds like it's stuck between 2 gears
You dont put sychro spring
I'm aware.. I fixed it afterwards.
I need the hookup for a 2nd gear on the counter shaft for an 8th gen 6 speed
Unfortunately, I'm no longer able to get great deals on the gears, synchrotech sells what you need though
What’s the exact name / link for the puller on your vise at 15:15 ?
I really appreciate your videos but please get rid of that painted work bench. It makes it tough to see those parts especially on a cellphone screen. Thanks
That was a temporary solution. I don't think I've used it again since this video
Is this the same for an 03 crv 5 speed as well?
yes. minor differences
Hey Boss! Do you still got the plug on an oem 2nd gear for an ep3 trans
Let me check and see
I’m guessing the 6 speed is different? I didn’t see anyone else use a puller
not really. I have a press that I use now. Some of the old parts have just been on for several years and aren't exactly eager to move, so we have to offer them some encouragement!
I have a question, how to identify whether its a tsx or rsx transmission?
the trans code on the sticker.
Would you recommend replacing synchro sleeves and besrings while in there ??
It wouldn't hurt
Hi, hope you can help. I have an accord type s (UK, K24a3). I purchased and had installed a same gearbox but with ep3 gears 1-5 with ep3 4.7 final drive.
My speedo is WAY out, over 12% at least. What gear does the speed sensor use to work the speed out?
it depends. If it has the rear speed sensor, it's using the diff. If it has the front speed sensor, it's using 3rd gear
@@hondaresource Thanks makes sense, its using 3rd gear which is ever so sightly smaller which is why I had to remove the washer on the VSS!!
thanks for the info
Hi! Which transmisión fluid do you use for this gearbox with this synchros?
OEM Honda MTF works fine
Do you know the torque specs for the bellhousing bolts to the block?
Ugga. I seriously have no idea
Great vid! Where are you located?
I'm in Alabama
Is there a difference from the rsx gear stack and the accord gear stack?
Different ratios and some rsx are 5 speed
Are Synchro Tech Brass Synchros good for daily driving ? I’m also gonna need 2nd gear 1-2 sleeve , 1-4 synchros, 3-4 hub and sleeve, shift arm would everything synchro tech would be good ? Or should I get some stuff oem
Synchrotech sells good stuff
Brass is equivalent of stock
this doesn't look that bad except for not having a press or a puller.
So I'm going to try this in my rsx type s 6 speed. Is the extra gear pretty straight forward?
really no difference besides an extra gear on the top of each gear stack and the shift forks are slightly different. Just make sure to put the metal rings on the synchros
Do you know if the synchros will be the same for the K awd transmission?
They are the same as ep3 / rsx base
Where did you end up buying the 2nd gear from that was cheaper
They aren't available any longer
Guys hopefully you can help me out , I did swap on my ep3 2003 k24a2 motor and transmission type s 2003 everything works except reverse won't get gear , it does if I do directly from selector other than that works likenit should be . There's anybody that can tell me what could be , please . Thanks a lot 🙏🏼
I haven't had any issue with the shifter in our ep3 with a6 speed trans
@@hondaresource there's any advice or any step that I missed it ? How about the shifter ?
@@HectorRS it should be pretty much plug and play
Are all the synchros the same or does it matter where they go ?
some are, some aren't. I can't remember which ones right off the top of my head
@@hondaresource sweet thank you also would you happen to know how to tell the series of the transmission or where to find out ?
I need a second gear
I don't have access to them anymore.
What's that tool you're using to press the shaft?
bearing splitter / puller I rented from Autozone
Looking to buy Carbon Synchros. Have a link to purchase?

Hey there, if you still can get one, i need a second gear for a 04 tsx
Unfortunately I can't get them anymore. Synchrotech will be your go to for that one
@@hondaresource ahh dang okay thank you
Wonder if he realized he forgot the snap ring on the synchro
Yeah, also added it to the description and commented on several people's comments to make sure they put the rings on.
Where do you recommend getting the Ep3 gears ?
Synchrotech is the only place I found them
Is this a manual transmission?
yes
Hi
Being "The Honda Resource", can you please confirm that gear stacks from a ~2005 Accord 5-speed transmission with a K24 engine can be interchanged with those from an Element. I'm interested in swapping out the 4th and 5th gears with those from the Accord which are much taller. Thanks!
You have to keep the element third due to the speed sensor. The Accord 4th and 5th will work though
@@hondaresource Yes, I recall that from your Element transmission rebuild video series. An essential tip! As always, thanks so much for your quick replies!
@@hondaresource Hello again. Are the shift forks also interchangable between the two transmissions (4-cyl Accord/Element)? I'm thinking about using the taller 4th and 5th from the Accord. Thanks.
@@canuckfixit7722 they should be identical
@@hondaresource I'll double check the cross reference on Honda Parts Now. As always, thanks for your help!
Do you still have those 2nd gear? Email contact?
na, my hookup dissolved. Synchrotech still sells it though
Lol no springs on the synchros
Yeah I caught it after the video and went back to fix it. There is a video on the channel for that
@@hondaresource lol nice you know my buddy Brian Gaddy
@@mitchellb1125 yep yep
Damm no one likes to show getting the reverse threaded bolt off. Lol it's cursed!!
On the countershaft?
@@hondaresource yea. I'm guessing only with a 1/2 impact driver would get it off. I tried by hand with a vise at the other end, with wood in between of course and the fd teeth causes it to slide out
