I don't think that was the point...
For me it's not the question of responding or listening to the other, but more how we perceive the people that think differently.
The morale for me would be :
1. instead of avoiding the people that think differently from you, try to interract with them and understand their stories and why they believe in what they beleive.
2. This exchange, done live and not with internet that block empathy must be seen as a great activity to do to enrich yourself
I wish I could speak in front of a big audience like this and I am double of Shreya’s age. The topic that she brought up speaks to me directly. Being a Russian living abroad I just can’t understand people who still support Russian actual government but what really helps in this situation is your community that shares your vision, that’s what the speaker mentioned and I can confirm from my experience. Affinity groups can be really helpful when you feel like you are losing the ground under your feet.
Yeah, a whole talk was really necessary to state the obvious? What do you mean you can't understand the people who support the Russian actual government? There are opposing narratives.
If others disagree with themselves, I think the best way is that life will always meet the most beautiful scenery in the deepest despair. Just be yourself. There is an old saying in China, "A wise man seems foolish."❤❤Agree with the praise message.

Very wise words from such a young woman. Personally I have actually always been looking for people who looked different from myself. In first grade I was the little skinny kid who made friends with the fat kid in the class. And when I got older and started dating, I was always going with dark skinned girls, even if I had blond hair and blue eyes. Still to this day, I always try to seek the stranger in any room that I walk in to. And that is almost always very rewarding. But like the wise young lady says: Remember not just to talk to them. Remember to listen to them too.
I'm the same way. Growing up in the house that my grandparents bought decades earlier I always gravitated towards people who had moved around a lot, especially people from other countries. I wanted to learn a few words from their language, hear what school was like in their country, etc. It has served me well in language learning and it opens relationships with people when you know a little about their country. I do need to be more open to people who have politics that are different from mine and build bridges instead of walls.

"When you call yourself an Indian or a Muslim or a Christian or a European or anything else, you are being violent. Do you see why it is violent? Because you are separating yourself from the rest of mankind. When you separate yourself by belief, by nationality, by tradition, it breeds violence."
It's the same situation for me. After spending my whole secondary education in schools with 98% majority of people of same race of mine, I decided to study in the university where I was the minority, less than 3%. It was such an eye-opening experience and very rewarding at the same time. My whole life just changed after that and I became better at conversation and also more understanding, and it affected my career positively after that.

How valuable it is to realize the existence of different opinions at such a ypung ages. Often we can see people who are not young, lived a lot, but still think that their opinions are the right ones and do not give a different opinion even a single chance. I wish before arguing or condemning others we would first think, why these people acted like that or thought this way. Once I heard the phrase, that even the worst person actually has good intentions in his mind. First it was suprising, but then I realised that this might be actually the case indeed.

very brave and insightful talk, especially coming from a soon-to-be highschool graduate. the more i grew up, the more it gets hard to sit down and listen to opposing voices.. as the polarization itself gets extremely extensive. i know that i'll be achieving my ideal self when i'm able to listen and learn, to actually absorb the others' ideas as new information instead of straightforwardly judging it out of my egoistic self.
What a remarkable young lady! Kudos to her and what she is doing 😊To be frank, most people know what she is saying. But our platforms place engagement and profit above level-headed conversations. Because, if we were all silent and unengaged, these platforms would not make money. That's the task that this young lady and her peers will have to tackle.

Tears in my eyes- I wish I had this compassion, courage and rootedness to connect with people who are different than me in high school - but I definitely carry this idea with me now. I think that this is a very good ted talk. I think that it is useful for everyone to listen to understand and building an understanding about the difference. I really what this girls said "a conversation what we should listen not to win or not to agree, but to learn".

Life and human interaction on Twitter is fake. Being online makes one lash out in a few sentences. If two people, that are arguing on Twitter, instead had their debate over coffee or a couple beers, they wouldn't use the words they use on Twitter. They may always disagree but a respect for other's opinions has a good chance at happening.

I don't like to argue. It's easier to step aside.
Except you can't do that with people that do want to argue. They won't let you step aside, they'll keep aggressing to continue the argument that they probably started in the first place.
Sometimes in life the matter is important and stepping aside is not an option. No point arguing for arguments sake, but you need to know how to stand up for yourself.

Such important words from a young lady. Having uncomfortable conversations with people you disagree with is essential. It helps us to leave our comfort zone and listen to other opinions. It can lead us to different thoughts, change our minds and help to find the truth. Because the truth always lies somewhere in the middle 😉 At least it teaches us not only to hear, but to listen to.

All of the arguments presented to you by others against the death penalty are wrong headed (based on cherry picked information and talking points by stakeholders that include lawyers representing the accused) ….. but the premise of your Talk still holds water.
Adult conversation doesn’t require agreement but it absolutely requires respect from both sides. Peace.

The vast majority of the time, when we enter into a discussion, we first of all seek to convince the opponent. The speaker is right - instead of making out your case, any difficult conversation should start with a search for common grounds and issues. When two people realize that their goals converge, it is much easier for them to exchange views and hear each other.

This is a problem with many of us. We pass on thoughts and ideas and beliefs inherited from our parents and our peers. There is little education on self, critical thinking. Our future rests in the hands of teens like this speaker. Adults and older people are in need of a paradigm shift.

I'm intolerant of the other side because all they do is attack my character and not my arguments. EX: I told anti-gun people that I had to use my gun to save my life during a robbery which had 5 people with knives, and the anti-gun folks told me I could be a mass shooter because I'm simply a gun owner. They even told me that the very thing I used to save my life is used for mass shootings in schools. I was even told that as harsh as it may sound, that under the utilitarian model, I should've died that day because there should be no guns in the first place so I may have been stabbed, but in return, many children would've been saved in a gun free world. I was furious at that point and asked them if they would like to be sacrificed for the greater good, but no one said yes. What a bunch of hypocrites. This is why people in America can't get along! To be frank, I don't seek fake harmony anymore. I'm standing firm to my beliefs. I'd rather have honest conflict over dishonest harmony any day.

I personally don t believe in death penalty as i believe in the prevention and rehabilitation..
Imagine being able to see when someone Is manifesting some clear "dangerous" signal that can lead to some extreme beahviours like taking someone's else life.. It s not easy and it s not something can change overnight , but i believe the tech can help a lot..

Civil discourse, listening assumes other parties too are interested in same. Often they r not. Having comprehensive perspectives is crucial, but one should not based ones position based on convincing others, for some, are so biased, that they are convinced on their own point.
If someone says sun is blue, its up to you to show proof of otherwise, irrespective of them getting convinced or not.
Learn To Listen
In answer to her last question the conversation would have never gotten off the ground and I would have experienced bullying and harassment if I had gone out of my legue . High school is brutal man and I was on the lowest rung of the social hierarchy . In adulthood I am interested listening to opposing viewpoints both in people I've befriended and seeking out podcasts and channels .

Your point of view depends on the position you take.
I would have preferred she committed herself to make compelling case for both sides, reflecting she really understood both the positions. She basically told the story of being convinced by someone else, as if this by itself is a victory. Nonetheless, thumbs up for the effort as a 17 year-old and wish her well as she continues to develop her skills.
I'm in my condo committee and there's one member who steamrolls, schemes, manipulates her way through meetings, agendas etc. I don't really see how one can learn anything from a person like that except the worst.

Would you prefer someone call you evil or bad, or have that someone force you to obey that person's preferences? Differences are fine; division is fine; unity is trouble (group-think, monoculture, monopoly, one-party rule, etc.) when liberty isn't the first ideal.
