How is this oner from GAME NIGHT so seamless?

- Game Night (directed by John Francis Daley & Jonathan Goldstein) features a setpiece staged as a oner - a single, continuous shot - that is a basically a "hot-stakes game of hot potato". And it's really good! But how did they do it? And why is it so good?

I forgot just how good this movie was.
Glad to remind you! Def a comfort watch for me!!
Didn't even know, gonna be watched soon enough.
Was about to type exactly this!
@@BittermanAndy(looks at view count) I think a lot of people haven!
A wonderful essay, thank you - but David Fincher was mentioned more often than the actual directors of "Game Night," John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein, who weren't credited at all.
Genuinely, thanks for calling us out on this. Both Mel and Stu (who run Shot Zero) work in the film industry and we try to avoid giving the directors too much of the credit and too much of the blame. We clearly didn't strike the right balance in the video. I'll update the CZcams description to mention John Francis Daley & Jonathan Goldstein by name.
@@_shotzero Thank you - and I plan on binging all your other videos!!!
Can we appreciate how that glass table didnât shatter into a million pieces, just fell over. That looks so funny, because weâre used to the opposite!
@@nicholasfuric âGlass tables are acting weird tonightâ
@@_shotzeroalso much safer for the stunt actor playing the brawler, who is shirtless and couldnât wear protective gear
The scene in the bar where the camera rotates with the door knob is another beautiful shot from that movie.
Brilliant analysis of a brilliant and underrated film by an underrated channel!
Thanks for watching and for saying!
Not enough people know about how awesome this movie is! The technical filmmaking, the comedy, performances and story are all 5 stars. This is a near perfect movie and I wish more people saw it in theaters. It was awesome.
I absolutely love the Texas Switch, it's so simply in theory but the creative uses and final products always astound.
This movie is so good, every time I watch it I am impressed by how tight the script is, how good the directing is, and the jokes are creative and land perfectly. Based on this alone I went to the theatre to watch DnD Honor Among Thieves, I knew John Francis Daley & Jonathan Goldstein would knock it out of the park and I was not disappointed
Now I have to watch this film. Thanks for the detailed breakdown of the shot.
Thanks! Hope you enjoy the film!
Me, watching this scene: "Woah that was a funny scene!"
Someone with brains watching this scene: "Let's understand this masterpiece"
You got a subscriber! Great video
Awesome, thank you!
Great video. Since the first time I watch this film I thought of David Fincher filmmaking. My favorite shot when Bateman drops the egg and the camera passes through the railing remind me of a Birdman scene or a Watchmen. I like those shots.
You are gonna get so big, can't wait to watch it happen.
Great content man, your insight is so refreshing!
@@Forlore Thank you very much! We appreciate the kind words. We are also very active on Substack and social media (insta, twitter etc) if youâd like to follow our written breakdowns!
Thank you for making this video. It is really enlightning.
Glad it was helpful!
Great film
Small correction. At 1:07 you label Fight Club as a film from 2018, it should be 1999. Awesome video otherwise.
Thanks for catching it. Shame I canât replace videos on CZcams. :(
@@_shotzero No worries, it's not like it changes the thesis or conclusions
Brilliant stuff â€
@@mattresbert thank you!
Subbing now so I can say I was there when this channel ONLY had 10k subs. Great work and great analysis. This is so much more fun than watching someone rip apart a film trying to do a bad Roger Ebert impersonation
@@mykeljewell awwww. Thanks!!
only seen it once, but the one shot is quite memorable
Great video thanks
Thank you!
Thanks again Stu, nice breakdown of movie making methods, and more tips on films to see. You people are a good gang of usual suspects I am looking forward to seeing more of. đđ
"You people are a good gang of usual suspects" may be one of the best ways I've ever been referred to, plus I love it as a loose Casablanca reference!
@@mehlsbells5133 - Glad to be of service. Now excuse me while I go and look up Casablanca quotes...
Yesss!âŠOh no! He diieed⊠I know the video isnât about that but itâs my favorite line delivery đ
@@aarkwrite7240 Sp many great lines on this film but that one is an all timer for sure.
I think that's the same mansion from the Juneteenth episode of Atlanta
@@danieldl9437 Ooh! We will have to double check. Pretty cool if so.
Is âonerâ a more common term than âcontinuous takeâ or âlong shotâ? This was the first time I encountered it. Due to the lack of explanation, it wasnât clear what this meant until the brief clip of the scene from Children of Men.
Thanks for pointing that out. Oner is def the common term in the film industry, I'm just not sure how widespread it is outside of filmmaking + cinephile circles. Still trying to dial in the right tone/level for our videos. Could be the kinda thing I put an definition on screen for without mentioning in the VO.
@@_shotzero Great to know, and thank you so much for taking the time to reply. All the best! đ
Ahh yes, fight club 2018
The much maligned remake.

@@JoshuaLundberg yay!!
Welp. I'm subscribed now.

do you think you'll review a shot from a john wick movie any time soon?
Do you have any in mind? We've discussed this shot from John Wick over at our instagram - instagram.com/reel/CqZfhFBN2g5/?igsh=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==
@@_shotzero the most unique one i can think of is in john wick 4 where the camera pans above the entire set, or also in JW 4 where cane and john fight for the first time in the movie. those are the only ones i can think of off the top of my head sorry
â@@saidm0936 Yeah, that oner that was mostly shot from above was fantastic. Combined with the cool visuals of the dragon's breath (the special shotgun, with the burning ammo) it's definitely a very cool scene
Iâve never had a scene so ruined by seeing the CGI as in that Breaking Bad scene
@@iamalittler Well, it is VFX and itâs still very clever!
Fight Club (2018) might not be quite right
The underseen remake.
If this is her place, I'd give her an 8.2 in my opinion, based on visuals and vibe, and I have a soft spot for the casual next door look.. But that title font has to go. Way too many Helvetica knock off signals going on.
Wtf is an oner
A long-playing, continuous shot.
@@_shotzero oh cool. learned something new. Thank u
@@KrisMorena. itâs why we do it!!
looks boring....got watch The Goes Wrong Show...way funnier
@@curtisnewton895 the what show? Is it a sketch show?
As a person who has seen both the goes wrong show (also their actual original production in New York city) and game night, this movie was definitely funnier than an episode of the goes wrong show and these two subjects are completely different in nature making it very difficult to compare them.
â@@_shotzeroIt's essentially a show based off their play where everything ends up going wrong, it's very good but idk why this guy is commenting that here, also I really enjoyed the video keep it up! đ
