We celebrate great directing, cinematography, choreography, editing, and sound.
Because Shot Design isn’t just what it looks and feels like. Shot Design is how it works.
Shot Design is intrinsically connected to the idea of mise en scène: the arrangement of all elements - props, set decoration, lighting, wardrobe, the actors - in front of the camera.
But (for us) it is more than that. It is about the relationship of those elements to the camera, to the edit and to the sound design. How all these elements work together to create meaning.
Our purpose at Shot Zero is to reverse engineer some of our favourite shots, scenes and moments into their individual elements so we can understand how they were executed in practice. The goal is to unearth practical tools for visual storytellers across mediums.

Why the fight choreography of Arnie's TOTAL RECALL is so good (and so brutal).
Total Recall (1990) is so brutal and so great! But what makes it so brutal (and so great)?
We compare the 1990 original to breakdown the differences in their approaches, their fight choreography and the filmmaking to look at how each movies makes us feel about the character of Douglas Quaid, played by Arnold Schwarzenegger in the 1990 original and Colin Farrell in the 2012 remake. We also discuss The Matrix (1999) and The Bourne Identity (2002).

The longsword duel from THE KING is on point.
zhlédnutí 1,6MPřed 21 dnem
The King (2019) has one of the best sword fights seen on screen recently. But what makes it so good? We break down the swordplay, choreography and filmmaking of this duel and what makes it work so well (and not so well). Special thanks to Gindi Wauchope from @TheSchoolofHistoricalFencing for his technical and historical insights. And many thanks to my sparring partners featured in this video: L...
How does Ripley take control in Alien?

After Dallas has died, #Ripley is next in command. But being in command and being in control are different things. So Ripley needs to assert herself to the remaining crew. All the performances are powerhouses and make this work dramatically, but Ridley Scott use some great visual storytelling to support them. Let us break down how! Read more about how #ALIEN frames Ripley in our *free* substack...

Facehugger attacks Ripley in Alien

This scene from #Alien where Ash, Dallas and #Ripley search for the #facehugger is a masterclass in quiet tension. But what makes it so good? We try to break down how it works. Ripley invades Ash's space in Alien

This seemingly simple scene from #Alien - where #Ripley confronts Ash for the first time - is fascinating: The angle on Ash was shot *without* #SignourneyWeaver, but they use a stand-in to make the frame dirty; while the reverse angle on Ripley was shot later as a clean single° (see PS below) Yet the cumulative affect really works - Ash feels suspicious, and Ripley feels strong. While the short...
Logos, Incorporated honourable mentions

(no need to adjust your monitors) We capped off our Logos, Incorporated week with three honourable mentions. These shots don't transition into the film's opening as Raiders of the Lost Ark, The Mummy, Waterworld, and Sunshine did. But all are so iconic you can probably instantly recognise what movies they're from, anyways. 1. The Matrix 2. Scott Pilgrim vs The World 3. Blade Runner 2049
David Fincher on handheld cameras

In the early 80s, commercials director Leslie Dektor pioneered the use of 'shaky cam'. But as David Fincher explained to Art of the Title (which we quote in this video!) while Dektor's work had a profound impact on the future, its cineamtic power comes from the past... #davidfincher #directing #filmmaking #cinematography
Why is Ryan Gosling so funny? Because he's a CLOWN.

We are convinced that Ryan Gosling has studied clowning. In the Nice Guys, Ryan Gosling's Holland March feels like a clown: drunk, clumsy, impish, greedy, and dressed LOUDLY.
The Excellent Scientific Detail of DEEP IMPACT

... in which we praise some on-screen graphics! 1998's #DeepImpact was (and still is) lauded for its degree of attention to scientific accuracy. You can see this in the differences between how the Government and the Newsroom render (with 90s era CGI!) the impending comet's tail. It's a small detail that quietly reflects the attitudes of the film's characters and their worlds. Just great visual ...
The detached, indifferent camera of Zodiac
zhlédnutí 440Před 7 měsíci
In the neonoir (ish) #Zodiac, the crew laid 450 feet of dolly track, mounted a camera inside the Chevrolet Corvair, and pushed the Corvair down that track in order to create a camera move with the detachment and indifference that David #Fincher was after. Audio taken from the commentary track for Zodiac. We miss those days. #filmmaking #cinematography #grips #directing
Stop saying 'Hotspore'!
Fine...I´ll watch the remake again!
Loved the video! Movie was good too.
I beat and thrust my sword every Friday. Well, its more like a dagger :(
I think the camera work in the remake worked better in the previz. There was something "uncanny valley" about how it bounced around with real actors
Is this a good movie?
F Arnold’s Freedom.
"HotSPORE"
I know right :( But on the upside, it's now a t-shirt design?!

Great movie, quite historically inaccurate in many parts as far as the story but so well told as piece of visual medium
Ultimately, the only person qualified to remake a Verhoeven film... is indeed Verhoeven. Otherwise, it doesn't really work. Sure, people can TRY (and they have, obviously), but it's a bit like someone trying to emulate Spielberg, Lucas, Coppolla, etc. I mean, even Michael Mann was redoing his OWN FILM when he shot "Heat". :) Small Easter Egg... Xander Berkeley got to be in both. Super underrated actor.
Well done. Love the break down. Not sure how much the head butt would do. Not only because of the armor, but becuase Hotspur appears to be off balance and on the back foot. I dont see him being able to generate enough force to cause any reaction.
Very nice observation. I appreciate that kind of insight to biomechanics, so thank you.

Visors didn't need catches and locks. They cocked one side higher when they riveted it on and it stayed up or down by an interference fit.
So I hate the 2012 fight scene. I know that if you're on a SWAT type team you have a lot of training. Weapons and hand to hand training. Even if you're on a crappy SWAT team you'll just shoot and hit your target from 10 yards away. The Bourne movies changed fight scenes in movies forever bringing in a realism that is cool but your "Jason Bourne" character still has to have realistic enemies to fight. The 2012 movie SWAT team are basically a bunch of Star Wars Stormtroopers.
I always hated this movie.

Tutorial on how to make a monetized 10 minute long video using two swings of a sword from a popular movie lots of people recognise and will click on the video..
If only I was that smart: zero monetization on this video because it’s copyright claimed and I never bothered to fix it because I didn’t think it’d be popular.
Just RUSH WITH DAGGER!! 🗡️😀
So stoked to have found this channel! Love your insight and how you bring up things like the cultural vision of a fight scene for the era.
Thank you and welcome!
(With the caveat that i don't know if that wasn't the case), but imagine how much better the scene would've been if they hired Buhurt ... what would you even call them, re-enacters doesn't seem right given some of the fights i've seen. I'm guessing N-'s legal department didn't want to, because we could've seen genuine plate denting, sparks, swords bending against helms and more. Some of the fights you can see online are so realistic (and they really are to some extent) that you'd think the guys (and a few gals) inside had a feud for generations one against another. There's a video out there with a guy hammering another in the coif, denting the coif in the play. And don't get me wrong, some will say "that's insane and unsafe" but these guys take safety very seriously and the armor is done very well. There's several videos online with the construction of some of these pieces and it's thick metal, reinforced, all the safety catches and pins are obligatory and the metal is baked to red hot, the dipped. The craftsmanship of both Buhurters and armorers is unreal.
The King is not a good movie at all. Actually this scene is the peak. Everything else is horrible, especially the Agincourt battle...
Ironically as a Scotsman, this is one of my favourite movies. Thank you for this video, makes me appreciate this scene even more. Be interesting to see your opinion on the outlaw king fight scenes.
My pleasure! Sounds like I need to watch The Outlaw King!!
👀
Haha, for a moment I was extremely confused why the Muad'Dib was suddenly on a medieval battle field.
oh its that twink from dune
pretty much all of the bad swordplay choices can be explained by the fact that this dude would have probably been fuckin like 17, idk my history that well but hes young in the film for a reason/
The extra's armours look much better than King Henry's own armour.
When Henry has Hotspur in a choke from behind, Hotspur is holding his visor down. Referring to what you mentioned in the beginning about how they don't have locking visors yet.
🤯 I didn’t notice that! Great little detail. Thanks for pointing it out!
I think, the reason is "Paul Verhoeven" and his over-the-top, yet tongue-in-cheek film making.
PV is the best.
Loved that movie
How does this fight change if they're not wearing armor? (or are wearing lighter types)
I mean, from a realistic standpoint, I'd expect to see a lot more "point in line" stuff ie making sure the threat (ie the point) is visible and directed at the opponent. Sharps make judging measure very difficult because you don't quite know where the point is. So you'd be hanging back out of distance. Which also means a lot less happening until it happens and then its over. Like we see in Samurai films. Tension tension tension explosion fight's over.
12:25 - what do you mean Trinity 'not scary'? I think there was scare factor in her intro; she killed a buncyh of cops, and before we knew that they weren't the good guys. And technically those cops were innocent, playing their role in the Matrix. Not to mention her unworldly spider like powers; pretty scary.
Thanks for the insightful comment. I am old enough to have seen The Matrix in cinemas. So I think my viewing of Trinity is contaminated by my future knowledge of her. You’re right that she’s presented as something to be feared, as Agent Smith says: “Your men are already dead”.
Fine I will re-watch the king 😅
I really enjoyed this video and the movie, but you have to get past about 15 minutes of hokieness. There is some historical stull in the film that could go over a lot of people's heads, like when the King tells his new French bride they will only speak English in court. That was the 1st time since William the Conquer in 1066 that French stopped being the official language and English was reintroduced. Oh, and that Pattenson guy from Twilight was really good in the movie.
It kind of seems like a small shield and dagger would be more optimal against someone with a longsword in full armor. Or at least equally as effective.
The fight between the 2 women is also one of my favourites ever, filmed really well.
Yeah, tis so good. Stoked when I found some of the BTS footage
Shoulda went for the dagger sooner
The battle scenes in this movie were excellent but the 1v1 duel is ridiculous. I really don't like this trope where a duel decides the outcome of a battle. It never happened in history, it's not original and you already know the victor before it starts so there is no tension. The highlight of this movie was the battle of Agincourt. That's the closest to what I'd imagine a real battle would be like. No flashy swordplay, just a load of men desperately hacking at each other and slipping in the mud. There was no scene where Henry spots Louis across the field so the armies part to create an open area for them to have a showdown in. It felt authentic. This movie made me a fan of Timothy Chalamet. I'm really rooting for his career.
Thank you for this insightful breakdown! I also love how well they've managed to bring across the very real danger of becoming fatigued during armored combat. Towards the end they both start grunting and breathing heavily. Paired with the sharp camera work, sound design and editing it all comes together wonderfully.
The remake was so stupid. A totally implausible and illogical train that goes through the middle of the earth aside, they completely missed the point of a Philip k dick story which is “was the whole thing a dream”
The ending made me feel like the knife is much more effective than the longsword if both are covered in armor
Correct! You'll see that in The Last Duel, too.
I loved this movie so much, and the first thing I noticed was how realistic the fighting scenes were. They were gritty, kind of sloppy, more human than what you see in most movies.
the silence after he killed him
SO GOOD.
i would have went for the dagger right away. the sword is quite useless in armored combat. well played tho.
well when you get yourself a battle ready sword and sword play with that for awhile. you'll know why guys aren't burning out their endurance straight off. top that off with full armor. it's heavy, believe it.
Longswords are only slow when you swing them like the doofuses in media. Doofi? 🤔
It’s stage combat of a sorts. So big blows to make it read. There’s a reason HEMA isn’t a big spectator sport!!
How do magnets work?
Duh, magic!
The original Total Recall is perfect. It doesn't need a remake. So is Robocop.
Hotspur was based
