SO glad I saw Green Day at Lollapalooza in 1994 when this album (Dookie) came out! I had tickets/plans to see them again in 2009-with Franz Ferdinand opening-but plans fell through.☹️) Anyway...
They were so awesome! Also lucky enough to see Beastie Boys, Tribe Called Quest, Smashing Pumpkins, George Clinton and Parliament Funkadelic, The Breeders, etc.

You should do the whole song with subtitles. You missed some of the best lyrics. Fun/morbid fact, the term basket case comes from world war 1. It meant a soldier who lost their arms and legs and had to be carried in a basket. Now it means someone who's a mess mentally and can't get their sh-t together. It doesn't mean insane like some other commenters are saying.

the term basket case apparently goes back to WWI referring to someone who lost their arms and legs, literally having to be carried off in a basket of sorts, but it evolved to mean someone with mental issues, usually some kind of neurosis. anxiety, depression, maybe ocd issues, etc. neurosis traditionally means you are aware you have some kind of problem (compared to psychosis which traditionally means you don't realize something is wrong with you)

This song along with Black Hole Sun and Smells Like Teen Spirit are the songs that turned me into a rock fan. I still remembered watching this video on MTV in Panama (to be exact, it was a countdown show that was aired in one of the local stations at 6pm every Saturday evening until I finally got cable later on that year) and instantly being hooked into this genre. 9 years old, and it change my musical perspective forever.

Been to a Green Day concert a couple of years ago.. It was the best! Btw...they were inducted into the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame back in 2015.
I'm a mechanic a 'basket case' is when they bring you the car literally in baskets because somebody took it apart and my job is to put it together again. So a 'basket case ' is when you have to put together what somebody else took apart. And no the parts are never all there you have to scramble to find bolts and small parts that if you miss, will not allow the machine to function correctly. A basket case is the worst kind of case because there are always a few baskets missing.

This is my 2nd favorite band of all time behind only Jethro Tull. My favorite song of theirs is Holiday. Try it live off the American Idiot album. They did broadway show for American Idiot and lead singer was in the play the first year. I saw the travel company do it in Raleigh NC. Still amazing!
This was my introduction to Green Day and I thought this song was bad ass and fresh. I regret not going to go see them when they toured on their first album because that was the only album I bought and enjoyed.
