High school. My English teacher failed my first paper, and I was a straight A student. His reason- my older brother was barely passing due to learning disabilities, so therefore, since he was a D student, my A paper was because I cheated. I walked out of his room and refused to go back. I got the A and a new teacher

Mrs. Green, my grade six teacher who shouldn’t have been a teacher in the first place. One of those abuses their position of power over others types.
We had to write a paper about the day in the life of a worker from Ancient Greece.
I accidentally wrote carriage instead of chariot.
Mrs. Green gave me a C- just for that word alone, and wrote a demeaning comment in red ink on the top of the paper.
Mrs. Green also decided it was her right to mock me for it to the whole class. I still hate her.

Oof, I felt that one where the professor lowered OP's grade for not having the same interpretation as the professor; I had the same thing happen to me in a poetry class in college. Said professor had also been an editor on the textbook we were required to buy for the class (even though we barely used it), and had tenure too. It was the first (and only) English class I ever failed. Now I have my BA degree in it, so he can suck it.
Two other minor instances from different teachers (incidentally, also English teachers): in middle school, I had a teacher who would mark you down if you mispronounced her name (CLAY-get, not CLAH-get), and refused to make my 89.9% in her class into an A. The other was another college professor: I tested out of English 101 and went straight into English 102 my freshman year, and the first paper I wrote for her she marked as zero, accusing me of plagiarism. Why? Because I'd used a word that I clearly didn't know the meaning of (wish I could remember what it was, but it's been a while). I proceeded to give her the definition, the Latin root word, and the root word's definition. I explained that I had taken four years of Latin in high school and happened to have a very good vocabulary because of it. Just because she had to look up the word didn't mean that I had to. She revised my grade, but still marked me down for being snarky.

For some reason my 4th grade teacher didnt like me. Im dyslexic, but this was in the late 60s, so no one knew what it was back then. The teacher told me i was lazy to study. She marked all my math papers with a F-, even if i did get them right. If i had any right it was because i cheated. I still hate you to this day Mrs Ryan.

Here is the thing, she gave all the skinny girls a 5 even if they didn't attend (Ohh, I have an headache, ohh, I feel faint etc), I on the other hand were a competitive swimmer, ran marathons etc, I just wasn't skinny enough for her liking.

In high school biology, I had grades in the mid-80's, even though I'd aced every exam and quiz. The teacher's "reason" for it? My lab papers were "messy" and not neatly written (because I was doing all the work while my partners just wrote things down). That, and she didn't like me. My mother, who was the principal's secretary figured this out after I graduated, and when my sister had her, she pulled that teacher aside and let her know that if she tried that crap with her, she'd be out of job. Much to the teacher's surprise, she found out I got a degree in Bio, and was working as a medical researcher

I made the mistake of taking my silversmithing classes in state university where the entire Fine Arts department consisted of six ancient tenured professors who also rotated as the Chair and Committee Prez of said department too. Chief among these was a nasty old bat who married a rich and famous local legend who was dust by the time I was a teenager, and she was also the local head of the P.E.T.A. "animal rights" organisation. More like "Pain in the A**", so I've dubbed her, "Mrs Pita" in this account. Mrs. Pita only ever attended her own classes the first and last days of the entire semester. The rest of the classes were run by her pre-graduate senior students. who got these unpaid internships by kissing the "A" part in Mrs Pita's title. I wanted to complain about being made to pay for an entire semester supposedly taught by an established art world professional and tenured college professor, but that was actually taught by a string of students who had not yet graduated and who were "senior" to me only by default of having nine months more course work than I had. Guess who I had to take my complaint to? The current head of the entire Fine Art Department... This person being my current professor. Went ot the Dean of Students. Was told I needed to file a complain with the Chair of the FIne Arts Dept and get my complaint reviewed by the department's committee. My current professor was the head or one of the senior members of these two departments. We had one semester-long project that needed to reflect every stage of our class assignments from start-to-finish of that semester. I love doggos with all of my heart, so my mission was to build a durable shrine/monument that would provide a shelter and water spot in one of the most notorious deep-desert dog dumping areas. I didn't just get an "F", I got a *Zero* for the entire semester. I wasn't allowed to appeal. I moved out of state later and showed all of my pictures and project outlines to other college art professors. All of them decisively took my side. Colleges really need to be reformatted.

My Junior English teacher in high school gave the assignment to "Prepare and give a five minute talk on a subject that you know well." I prepared a college level talk on 'The Theory & Application of Single Sideband Communications. This induced some graphs on the chalkboard. she started screaming that it was completely made up, and that I was not only getting a zero for it, but for the entire semester. She was yelling, in spike of another student telling her that it was real. The dean of Boys was called by another teacher. She was told that I was 'The resident Electronics Expert' and that she would lose her job if she gave me a zero. I tested out of b three year Engineering course three years later, which got me assigned to an Ar,y TV station NTSC Analog TV used Single Sideband for video transmission.

In 7th grade math, we had a teacher change mid-year from who I will call Mrs. B to who I will call Ms. P. Mrs. B was, apparently, accused of favoring students who were more advanced and neglecting the special needs students in her classes. Well, I guess Ms. P wanted to avoid that accusation so she went the opposite direction. One of my best friends at the time, J, was in the class with me and a cancer survivor (or something along those lines; basically, she was behind learning-wise because of a medical history but not a learning disability). There was a project where we were to work in pairs, and there was a math portion and a drawing portion (it was a math class but y'know). J and I worked together and because I liked J and was pretty decent at math, I offered to do all the math if she did the drawing. Yeah, you can guess how that worked out for me. When the drawing wasn't turned in, I was to be given a 0 while J was going to be given a 100. I had to do the drawing as well and it put a strain on my friendship with J (though tbh I partly blame her mom who couldn't imagine her daughter doing anything even slightly wrong and kicked up a fuss; I suspect she was the mom who accused Mrs. B, who seemed really lovely but I was among the more advanced if notorious for not doing my homework, likely due to undiagnosed neurodivergence, so Idk if there was something going on that I just didn't know about).
Ms. P hated me and my friends anyway, her class was our homeroom and she was always telling us to be quiet during lunch while she gossiped with her favorite students because we would laugh during lunch. We were a bunch of guys (I didn't know I was a guy back then but eh, we were a bunch of dudes whether we knew there were no girls involved or not, and that showed in our behavior albeit not in destructive or gross ways) who were given more time than we needed for lunch, of course we were going to goof off a bit. It wasn't our fault we were in trailers in a classroom the size of a freaking postage stamp. We weren't unnecessarily loud or laughing constantly, we were just normally joking around like decently chill middle school dudes do.

My 4th grade teacher gave me a 75% on a test even though I had gotten all the questions and the extra credit correct. She said it was my punishment for getting everything right. Her reasoning was that I lived on a farm, which I did, and "Everyone knows all farm people are stupid." So I was being punished for cheating and trying to be like people who were "better than you will ever be." She couldn't explain how I had supposedly cheated but refused to change my grade or her mind.

Mid 90s. A French teacher gave me 0% on a term paper stating that she never received it. I argued that she must've lost it as I still had my draft in my binder, even showed it to her while asking if I could resubmit that very night once I recopied the draft again. She refused and I failed the class as a result (it was worth 40% of the course grade). The following year, as I was retaking that class (it was mandatory in order to graduate) I saw her again, as her desk was near the one for the new teacher I had, when I was handing him a paper and she had the gall to tell me that not accepting for me to resubmit might have been a mistake. My guess is that she found my paper over the summer... And why tell me?! I passed that class with a grade above 80% (can't remember exactly what it was). Why in the world would I have had a complete draft of my work (I didn't have a computer then) if I hadn't done the assignment. I am still baffled and furious about her stubbornness.

I made a model of a log cabin in the fourth grade. My grandfather cut the pieces for me, but I designed and constructed the cabin and put it all together myself. The teacher gave me a failing grade because I didn't put any steps on it, stating that it wasn't "truly accurate" to the photo that I had used for a reference. My grandmother was so angry, she went to the principal and demanded the teacher give me a fair grade. This, of course, led to the teacher giving me the grade that I deserved, but from then on, she scrutinized everything that I did and every grade was a fight for the rest of the year. I hope she's having the day she deserves right now.

I was raised in foster care from the age of four. After 9 years with the same family, they decided I should move. My high school freshman P.E. teacher gave me a D, even though I was captain of the soccer team and held the school record for the mile in track. My friend was this teachers' TA. The teacher told my friend I should have gotten an A, but she marked me down to a D because I wouldn't come talk to her about my emotional issues.

My computer teacher failed me because my pacman clone was not on the server when it was due, he later admitted that he had deleted it but didn't change my grade or let me resubmit. He just didn't want to do the work because he was more interested in his side project than his job. Mr Lendrum, you were literally the worst teacher in the school.

  • @CristobalWatsonHernandez

Story 22: Literally the same thing happened to me in my university economics class. It was a peer-rated course but the professor was meant to adjust unfair grades. One of my peers gave me sixes (good logic but incorrect answers) with no comments whereas everyone else gave me 10s. I pointed out that, according to the rubric and answer sheet, I should have received 10s considering I gave perfect answers, but the professor refused to change the grade even with objective proof that I deserved a higher grade.

  • @Isamu1416
    @Isamu1416 Před 3 měsíci +1

fundamentally, it is absolute bullshit to adjust grades to general abilities. In other words, a bad student gets full marks if the answer is roughly in the right direction. A good student gets 0.5 points deducted because the answer is a bit off the perfect solution. I had the same problem at school. I was clever and the teachers tried to deduct a few points from me for some bullshit. My English teacher corrected the spelling of names that exist in both forms in all of my essays. I countered by using names from Greco-Roman and Nordic mythology and names from the works of William Shakespeare. My work was actually really fun to read. Imagine this with the original characters: Hamlet, Romeo and Macbeth are sitting together during recess and having a conversation about family problems.

A big one the rocked the Australian education system.
A girl had to wright a book report on an Australian book from 1945. She failed gaetting an F, for not understanding the content of the book.
She had listed the book and her grandmother in the bibliography
When her grandmother went to the school, the teacher looked a bit stupid. The girls grandmother was the Author of the book and had used a mans name as her pen name. Mark was changed to 95%.
All the girl did was ask her grandmother what the book was about.
The book was only about the war with rabbits and kangaroo taking over farms and eating every thing and not about WW2 and the rape of europe by the 3rd reich.
Metafores getting used at the wrong time.

Not sure if it was a bad reason from his perspective but I am autistic with very poor fine motor control (probably 50% autism and 50% the fact that I also had a TBI). Unless I took an hour to write everything single word out it would always be somewhat illegible (and that's only slight hyperbole) and by the the time I got to college I was always able to type everything due to self advocacy). Unfortunately I never had an IEP due to my elementary school convincing my mom I didn't need one. Anyway.... One of the mostly nicest teachers I ever had loved counting random things wrong because he said he couldn't tell if it was a 6 or an 8 or whatever (was in calc class btw). Didn't result in a bad grade (I think I got a B-, which for AP Calc I will take), but I'm sure it cost me at least a half letter grade. Was annoying af, because he knew I was disabled despite not having an IEP but whatever, I have a JD now and you could argue it's because I learned never to take shit from people like him again.

Senior research paper, m topic was on censorship. While the sources I used were dated (1970's and 1980's mostly) they were government sponsored research projects and court rulings used to this day in rulings. As a part of it, we needed to include how it affected something local as a basis. There was a literal book burning in the 1980's in my state, I picked that. While I followed my teacher's guide lines to the letter, she kept rejecting my sources and idea. One day she pulls me aside and tells me to drop it because it was HER SISTER who organized and led that very book burning I was writing about. She was trying to censor my paper on censorship because I unknowing (my teacher married and had a different last name, no way to tell they were related unless I looked into that aspect) was writing about her family history. Game on. I turned it into a hit piece, and without bringing up blood relationship between the two, I brought some, while not illegal it was still very frowned upon information about her family into the public light when I read my paper to the class, with news articles to back me up. I got a D- on the paper and went from the top 3% of my graduating class to the top 15% and barely passed senior English class. If I had not passed it, I would have had to taken summer school and do a new paper, and guess who was the teacher that summer? I found out a LOT about her family during the research for my first paper, I would have had fun with my second.
