Solo Kill Team - Darktide or Stargrave?

  • We’ve just had the Darktide miniatures board game previews go up and while the idea of this game is fantastic, unfortunately I feel the execution of it leaves a lot to be desired. So in the first half of his video I’m going to explain why I think GW have missed the mark. In the second half of this video I’m going to look at Stargrave which is an scifi skirmish game by Osprey Games as an alternative for a solo style killteam game.

    01:28 The Darktide board game
    04:17 The Game Price

    If they had added the complete Blooded Kill Team and used the Commisar and Ogrin from that box as some kind of boss fight I think the price might have been more acceptable.

    Without new sculpts, this should have been another store exclusive like Barnes & Noble or Target. Those games are always around $35-$60 US when new. Combat Arena Lair of the Beast was only $35 and it has 13 Blackstone Fortress miniatures including the Ambull (vs 20 for Darktide).

    I agree on all the criticism of Darktide, specialy the price tag. I'm actually writing a mod using this concept and the previous game Fireteam to try to use all the KT warbands on a hex grid.
    With Stargrave, I think it has no comparison, it's just a different type of game. I love the concept of Stargrave and the way you put together the cards (great design!) a thing that the core game needs desperatly. The only thing of Stargrave is the damned D20 and the "quick math" in combat, it's very tedious and slow way to play. Anyway, thanx for the video!

    This the same what I have done grabbing ideas from frostgrave to use with warcry and the bladeborn box from B&N ...
    Bladeborn imo is one of the best small games out there. Warcry but with smaller underworld warband. Pure genious if you ask me.
    Sadly very limited and now extremely rare to find. Being based in western europe I had to import from the usa luckily way before covid and import then was still resonable, niw its just utterly insane to get things from the usa like this

    Actually I think Darktide is a pretty decent game. But the price is prohibitive. Sad really. I think using existing models was a good idea. If they had put new sculpts in the box it would have been snapped up by people just looking for the minis, like so many of Kill Team boxes.

    I think you have misunderstood what darktide is as you haven't played the game. The board game is supposed to be a literal translation of the video game which is why you are limted to what is in this box. the "kill team" as you put it are the only 4 options available in the video game. the guardsmen are justthat, they are chaose guardsmen/zealots. and then the poxwalkers. the only thing missing from this that are in the video game are a beast of nurgle, chaos spawn, plague ogryn, poxburster, a mutant, some of the enemy ogryn types, a daemonhost and pox hounds. it's not meant to be a kill team style game but i think morelike silver tower where you are moving through tiles to complete an objective while fighting off hoards.
    I think the price is a bit much for what is included BUT am putting that partly down to GW's new price hike (£50 would have been better).
    I can see them maybe doing an expansion in the form of extra missions and the extra miniatures. But overall I think this is just a quick money grab from GW and we would be better off having someone in the community make a free version that uses more miniatures (or from other ranges/3D printed) and printable card tiles.

  • @genghisgahan9623
    @genghisgahan9623 Před 2 měsíci +1

    This game is worth £30-£40 max. At that price, I'd give it a go (even though I have most of the miniatures already.
    But this sounds like a one off cash grab, as opposed to a new game with expansions and new enemies down the line.
    So disappointed in games workshop.

    IMO Stargrave isn’t the best at representing the 40k characters or setting. I played a full campaign, in my case, 6 games against various others, all of us using 40K minis (I played gsc), and in the ENTIRE campaign only like three of my guys died, even tho I was playing super reckless, because of the really cushy shooting rules.
    TL:DR-> nothing ever dies in Stargrave which removes any need for self preservation.

    • @jandukanocraft6897
      @jandukanocraft6897 Před 2 měsíci

      Not in my experience. Frostgrave/ROSD/Stargrave are super deadly. For even more death I add instakill when rolling nat20 or instasuicide when rolling a nat1

    • @Mosaic117
      @Mosaic117 Před 2 měsíci +1

      @@jandukanocraft6897 hey that’s not a bad idea. Another way to do this is rolling an injury die (the ones from necromunda, but a regular d6 could do) whenever a guy gets stunned from taking 4 damage from one shot to make guns a bit more lethal.

      @KrakDuk Před 2 měsíci

      @@Mosaic117 oh man, I absolutely love killteam 21. I think the loss of customization is honestly overstated and I ironically feel more free to kitbash and make characters in the new one.
      While you can’t do any loadout you want, but the old killteam didn’t have the cool specialists and most people ended up just spamming meta operatives (more boring to play against randos I found).
      That being said, Acolyte kinda mixes the customization of kt18 a with the mechanics of kt21 for a co op or solo narrative experience, I think it’s really fun. You have a ton of customization to make characters and give them a wide variety of weapons. There’s also a cool progression system.
