    • @RealEngineering

      Fighter planes are not pressurised, so no. That's why fighter pilots wear flight suits. They will suffer from fatigue in other ways, but not from cabin pressurisation.

      Because they are able to make them bigger without putting extra strain on the fuselage thanks to carbon fiber.

    • @jaysanyeep
      @jaysanyeep Před 7 lety +2

      because bigger windows make the passengers more comfortable. imagine being stuck in a room with no windows sort of concept.. so a bigger window would be better in this case. also because the fuselage is made of composite, and is able to withstand higher stresses, the cabin pressure in the cabin is greater in the 787 as well.

    • @John_Ridley
      @John_Ridley Před 7 lety +80

      I guess after all that, the answer is "because they can." There's no engineering reason to make them bigger, it's a marketing reason (people like big windows) and the engineering allows larger windows.

    • @connorlimburg4188
      @connorlimburg4188 Před 7 lety +2

      Dragon Skunk composite materials having a higher resistance to fatigue crack propagation (through the fiber reinforcement etc) allows the design to be larger and withstand the higher stress field that would cause an aluminum body to fatigue too quickly

    I fly the 787 twice every week between Chicago and Dallas. I consider myself incredibly lucky when I realize that many people will get a chance to fly on a widebody airliner perhaps a few times in their life, and probably never fly the latest and greatest. I never take for granted just how incredible flying the Dreamliner is, both from an engineering and passenger perspective.

    I've flown on the 787-8 and 787-9 a total of maybe 60 times and starting in another week I'll be flying on one about once per week again. They're comfy in the back and quiet in the cockpit. When I sit up on the flight deck it's noticeable how much less wind noise there is because of the nose shape. From a pilot's perspective I also like that it has electric engine start rather than pneumatic bleed air, plus it has a 5000 psi hydraulic system compared to the normal 3000 psi systems on other airliners.

      Because people like windows, and for now, we can afford to put them in. Once passenger planes are going hypersonic, then we won't have windows. Until then people want to see out of real glass. I mean I wouldn't mind cameras, but I am not the majority of people.

    Unfortunately this video is not up to your usual quality standards, but rather mostly a reiteration of Boeing PR. Yes, the 787 was revolutionary by Boeing standards, but not when compared to the Airliner industry as a whole, it is Boeing playing catch-up both in terms of technology as well as market positioning. It is mainly a reaction to the A330 killing the 767 in its market and despite being 20 years younger, the Dreamliner has gained no significant advantage to its European counterpart.

    • @rjfaber1991
      @rjfaber1991 Před 7 lety +13

      Isn't that just the story of the aeronautical manufacturing industry over the past forty years? Airbus and Boeing have immensely lengthy battles to decide which of their very similar planes is best, and while Airbus always wins, no company can give the other a killing blow. Yes, the A330 and A340 were excellent planes, but that didn't stop people buying 767s and 777s, in the same way that the A320 still being arguably the best commercial airliner ever built doesn't stop people buying 737s...

    •  Před 7 lety +22

      Robert Faber Which aircraft is best always depends on the needs of the airline. The most technologically advanced plane is not neccessarily the most economical one when considering purchase price, time to delivery, reliability, crew training, spare parts and of course the balance of capacity, weight, fuel burn and range.
      That being said, both the A330 and 787 are optimized for very similar missions and offer very similar economics with the A330 being a much older design. Under these circumstances, calling the 787 "revolutionary" is pure hubris. It is a good plane, on par with the competition. Nothing more, nothing less.

    • @rjfaber1991
      @rjfaber1991 Před 7 lety +2

      Valentin Brückel Yes, but the A330 and 787 don't really directly compete, hence Airbus not discontinuing the A330 in favour of the A350, but keeping the A330 (in A330neo fashion) alongside it.

    • @JZ1917
      @JZ1917 Před 7 lety +5

      The A350 is closer to a 777 in size, hence the A330 remaining in production. It is 787 vs. A330 and A350 vs. 777

    • @rjfaber1991
      @rjfaber1991 Před 7 lety +1

      JZ1917 It is if you're just looking at passenger numbers, yes, the A350 there being more capacious than the A330neo because it also takes over from the longer-bodied A340 variants. However, in terms of fuel efficiency, range etc. it very much is 787 vs. A350.

    • @rjfaber1991
      @rjfaber1991 Před 7 lety +6

      True. The A350 and 787 could trade blows all day, and the only reason the former would win that argument is because of Airbus' record as a company, not because of the plane, because the two really are very similar. The A350 is more advanced in some ways, the 787 in others, but neither really takes the crown, and yet both are tremendous steps forward in ordinary, everyday aviation.

    • @bumpty9830
      @bumpty9830 Před 6 lety

      Airbus and Boeing have some fairly different design approaches, particularly regarding composite materials. They're not as similar as you may think.

    • @naverilllang
      @naverilllang Před 6 lety

      Robert Faber airbus' record as a company? If we are talking about company record, airbus loses by a nautical mile. You're comparing it to one of the oldest and most prominent airplane manufacturers in the world. Boeing dates back to 1917. Their airplanes were well used in WWII, and is why many bombers start with a B as in B-17 even when not made by Boeing. Boeing was instrumental for their experience during the Apollo missions. Right now they are helping design a large earth based telescope that will produce better images than hubble by using their eperience with aerodynamics to reduce vibrations caused by wind hitting the walls of the facility. When finished, it will be the largest telescope ever built.
      Now what has Airbus done?

      better at what? can't really compare the planes in their intended market, can compare some of the technolgy that makes the plane but i dont think one can really compare either aircraft, its the same as comparing the A320 and the 747, just isnt a compatible comparison.
      And i would HIGHLY prefer to fly on the 787 to the A350 :P dam i loved servicing the 787's compared to the 350, quiet APU and very logical and well engineered access doors and servicing systems, the A350 was a bit to complicated. This said the 350 we had was not a commercial operator but a trial prototype so maybe the production model will be different

    1) Nice vid.
    2) on concrete ships. One from WW 1 recently broke up in Monterey Bay California. It had been docked for many decades and took abuse that would have LONG ago resulted in a steel hulled ship being destroyed.
    There is a new reinforcing material being used in land based concrete. It is basalt fiber. It is extruded molten basalt fibers bound by resin. This new rebar is being used in place of steel. It is 5X as strong and weighs 20% of what steel does. However its biggest advantage is that it doesn't rust, and it has thermal expansion properties similar to concrete. This means being able to make much thinner concrete structures and not worrying about water induced problems with the rebar.
    This would make concrete boats and ships much more attractive. Think about it.
