  • Shortly after having the liftgate motors replaced the trunk started having an issue where it would not latch shut, it would either attempt to shut and then spring back about a foot, or close and not latch. An experienced Volvo mechanic is stumped, and even Volvo corporate has little resolve on the issue. Any advice would be excellent

PROBLEM SOLVED: Hatch actuators that were replaced were actually defective. Dealer put another set of actuators on and problem was solved!

There are bump stops on either side of the liftgate that can be adjusted and reset with the VIDA software. My guess is that they are there to help the computer determine if the liftgate is properly closed. I haven't had this issue yet on my xc60 but if you've tried everything else this would be an easy item to have your mechanic check.

Did you keep/match the replacement actuators? Seems like a safety unlatch is being requested. Watch the hatch close parameter on VIDA? How did the operating limit alignment go? (I’m assuming there is one based on the window/sunroof procedures)

Be interested to know if you help it by pushing at the point it should latch (to see if the problem is the tailgate not getting to the fully closed position?

Hydraulic lift hatch support issue on 2012 Volvo XC60: I just replaced the hydraulic lift strut and the 2 hydraulic lines. When I try closing or opening the hatch remotely or via the switch it doesn’t work. Does anyone know if the system needs to be bled? If so how do I bleed the system? Thanks for the advice or please point me to the right source for assistance .

Got problem on Xc40. Tailgate cannot close fully. It closes only 2/3 of the way. Contacted the service centre and the car have to be towed back to the workshop. Now waiting for the tow truck.

Could be your after market rubber liner. It might be giving resistance to the tailgate when almost closed. Notice the carpet impressions on the tailgate. That's caused by the liner.

Sugarloafgee, in one comment, you said the problem was the "actuators". In another, you said it was the "liftgate motors". Which is it? Are the liftgate motors the same as the struts? Thanks in advance!

I believe it is a software issue. I talked one time to the owner of a dealership ( Toyota)who had to pay $200.00 to Volvo to get the software update so that it would close fully. ( It would remain open just slightly enough to have rain water seep in) After the update it worked fine. The guy replaced the struts just like you did and right after he had this issue.

I just had it in for a 60,000 mile service. Other than this liftgate issue(which is solved now) it had been a fantastic vehicle. Can't complain one bit.

It is the problem of motor , not actuator , isn't it?.

The replaced motor/actuators whatever you want to call them were faulty. A replacement set fixed the problem

My 2010 Volvo XC 60 Hatch won’t open at all can I get it to open from the inside?
In my opinion ALL vehicles should be able to open from the inside, maybe I need to rip break bust the inside in order to see the inside to see if I can get it open and guess what! I AM READY TO DO IT!
VOLVO you better get back to the drawing table to improve upon this, do you need this FEMALE to help you with that? on what should and shouldn’t be done with all future designs!!!!!
