    Thanks for this video. I am on stimulants (Concerta) and while they do help, my anxiety has gone through the roof. My doctor told me that switching to an SNRI like Strattera might help with the anxiety symptoms.
    Have you noticed any improvements or changes with regards to anxiety/social anxiety/mood levels while on Strattera?

      Yes I have noticed a huge difference with all of these issues. I had some anxiety issues in the middle of last year but they were actually being caused by caffeine. Other than that, I'm really impressed with the effects this medication has on mood and anxiety.

    Everyone has a different metabolism and that’s why medications some times don’t work for everyone or for some people they are too strong. Slower metabolism will also make it last longer ( there is a website that has all these statistics on how long it lasts min/max and how much time it needs to kick in min/max ). I had 40mg and I didn’t feel anything different. All I felt was probably just placebo because of what I read about it and what I was told about it ( only helped me sleep faster at night times, less overthinking before sleep).

    • @cuileann
      @cuileann Před 3 lety +1

      I agree, I think it really depends on the person and also how their ADHD is causing problems for them, Strattera definitely helped me with Anxiety and to some extent, it helped with sleep but for me, it didn't help enough that I could stay on a consistent schedule. I was on it for almost a year and yeah, just wasn't helping me function. I changed to Ritalin about a week ago and after the first day I was able to do things in minutes that took me months, it's been really life-changing but again I can completely see how Strattera would be more suited to say someone who is more inattentive or introverted, it does have a really nice calming effect and yeah I can really see it being of huge benefit to anyone who has ADHD and bad anxiety, like Strattera worked better for my Anxiety that beta-blockers, but in the end, Ritalin is just suiting me better.

    Hi Sarah. :) I was also trialed on Atomoxetine (10mg) for my adhd, however I experienced a really strange feeling of being very slowed down, almost feeling like I was underwater and it made it hard to get things done, as well as making me rather emotional, so I ending up stopping it. I was just wondering if you had any similar side effects, maybe when your dose went up? Wondering if I should have stuck it out a bit longer. :S x

    • @FindingYourSerenity
      @FindingYourSerenity  Před 3 lety +1

      I'm sorry it didn't work out for you. I felt off the first day I took it (10mg) but otherwise it wasn't too bad. When I went up a dose I felt just like that which you explained but I couldn't describe it well. My emotions were a little numb though and I didn't like that. I tried it out for quite a few weeks and thought the side effects would go away but they didn't. So I wouldn't worry too much about it because it probably wasn't the medication for you. Did you try something else? x

It's been good to learn about other people's experiences and your videos have definitely helped. :) So far, I've been tried on extended release stimulants, short release, Atomoxetine, and some other non-stimulant medication. Short release stimulants give me a bit of a boost, however, I'm waiting to speak to my doctor about an antidepressant that's sometimes given off label called Venlafaxine (an SSNRI.) x

Did you take methylphenidate before or in combination, or only started with atomoxatine? Any idea about the difference between the two? thanks. I think about the dosage, the body size, BMI etc determines the diff dosage needed for each one.

    Idk if anyone said this on comments, but you should probably consider testing your DNA for predisposition to generate an enzyme called cytochrome P450 2D6 or CYP2D6 for short. It seems to me that you have less of it than a regular person and thus your organism can't breakdown atomoxetine effectively enough and you end up chronically overdosed with it. Sleepiness is a bright symptom of an acute overdose, and you got it on first try of 10 mg. Atomoxetine should energize you on normal dosing.
    Overdosing of atomoxetine can also happen to someone who is taking some antidepressants due to them inhibinig CYP2D6.
    Also this doesn't say anything about severity of your ADHD symptoms, so don't feel like an impostor.

    I got diagnosed with inattentive type ADHD with some aspects of combined a week ago. I am a 42 year old male! from the UK.
    My psychiatrist wants me to try Strattera, I've obviously looked into it, and the side effects are worrying me. Suicide warning on the label, prostate and urinary problems for men, and of course erectile dysfunction to name a few. None of which I want to have anything to do with as I have had issues with my bladder in the past which I no longer suffer with.
    I am just not sure if Strattera is the right way forward for me and think I may do better on the stimulants.

    • @cuileann
      @cuileann Před 3 lety

      I'm someone who tried the medication for 8 months, the medication didn't work for me and I did have some issues, I had erectile dysfunction the first maybe week I was on it (I'm 27, I have 4 kids and had never experience that before so to be perfectly honest, my partner and I just thought it was so funny at the time xD) and then that side effect stopped happening completely. No other issues in that area affected me while on Strattera.
      As far as my mood, it really stabilized my emotions to the point, it completely helped my anxiety and it made me a much calmer person. There are a lot of listed side effects but the chances of you actually experiencing any of them are very low (well it will say on the leaflet what the common and non-common side effects are), I was also concerned when I was first diagnosed and was going to be starting the medication, but the reason for such a long list is because the pharmaceutical company that produces the medication legal has to list any and all possible negative effects of the drug.
      If you look at the female contraceptive pill, I think they have a similar list of horrible possible side effects but that's a very common medication many women use so I'd say to you If your doctor or psychiatrist is recommending you try it, just trust that they wouldn't prescribe you something if they really felt like it's going to have a negative effect on you.
      What I would also say, Sarah is right, if it's not working you can stop at any time, but! The most important thing is that you develop a good relationship with your doctor, when I stopped taking Strattera because it wasn't working for me, I had been on I think 40mg x2 per day for a couple of months and I just stopped completely, it did lead to emotional instability, I was getting into a lot of very heavy arguments with relatives and had I gone to my doctor before deciding I'm just going to stop taking the medication, they would have suggested I reduce the amount of Strattera I was taking over a couple weeks. So any concerns with bladder issues in the past or worries about the side effects, talk to your doctor, is very very important that you can talk about this kind of stuff with your doctor.

      I don't like coffee but I do drink energy drinks. I know they aren't good for me and I keep trying to quit. I've found myself to be jittery at times but I am unsure whether I am sensitive to caffeine or it has something to do with the meds. Have you any experience with this?

      @@FindingYourSerenityReason i asked was because I feel like when I have coffee with my strattera, it affects the efficacy. So hard to quit as I love my coffee. Oh an just one last question, how is your working memory whilst on strattera, I am on 80mg 2 month in and its not helped at all, I have trouble retaining boring but important information

    • @cuileann
      @cuileann Před 3 lety +3

      @@foziakhan1453 Yeah I had the same experience when I was on Strattera, I was warned by my psychiatrist to stop drinking coffee because it would affect its efficiency. I tried to stick with it for almost a full year (I think I was on it for at least 8 months), while on it, I was lacking energy, concentration, and motivation, that's not to say this drug doesn't work, Sarah is a great example of how it does work for some people, I've met people who it also works for but it wasn't working for me, I'm now on Ritalin and what I would say as well, while on Ritalin, I actually drink less coffee because I don't need it (I do love coffee haha) but I noticed, I'm drinking half cups because I don't need the energy, and I only need a slight amount of caffeine mostly for its taste, the habit of making/drinking it and to stop any symptoms of withdrawal.
      There is a stigma surrounding Ritalin and other stimulant base ADHD medications, basically, what happened for me on Strattera, I was really trying to make it work, I was putting in my best effort into all aspects of life but it just wasn't a medication that suited me and my life was just slowing crashing around me (Which is, as we are all aware typical of having ADHD) so at that point, I was aware it wasn't working for me, I would suggest, you talk to your doctor if you're noticing that the medication isn't helping you to function, I've said it in other comments under this video, if I had a serious issue with Anxiety and being aware I have ADHD, I would ask my doctor about Strattera because that was the most effective thing I have ever taken that help with that issue.
      But yeah, maybe ask yourself, what is it about coffee that you still want to drink, are you using it because you need the energy and focus to function? Or is it just, you've probably used it to self-medicate before realizing you had ADHD and it's just so damn good that it's difficult to not give it up at this point. If you're relying on it to function, I think you should talk to your doctor and you know maybe drinking coffee and taking Strattera works for you as well, there is also the aspect that Stimulant medication can cause people very bad anxiety.
      (Sorry for such a long post, I just find these youtube channels such a great place to identify and relate to people who are facing the same struggle and I think it's important to share my experience in case it could help anyone, and again I'm trying to be very cautious of saying one medication works better than others because it affects everyone differently, I wish I had noticed sooner that Strattera wasn't working, 8 months is a long time to wait, but I think the take away from what I'm saying is, try to identify signs or issues with any medication you're trying out and always have a conversation about it with your doctor, drinking a lot of coffee looking back on it, was a sign I was still coping by self-medicating)

      @foziakhan1453 Před 3 lety +1

      @@cuileann Thank you so much for your reply, its good to know someone else has a similar experience to mine. I have been on strattera for roughly 4 months and drink atleast one cup of coffee in the morning. I am on 80mg which I take in the evening but so far I have not seen any difference in my executive function, my learning, motivation, memory etc. The thing is it has made me less anxious, and more emotionally stronger, for that reason I don't want to come off it, saying that I also feel more lethargic on this drug. Its a good drug but I they say it only works for 30 percent of people. What I'm thinking of doing is lowering my dose and asking my clinician to add a low dose stimulant, apparently this way you get full coverage of your symptoms.

    • @cuileann
      @cuileann Před 3 lety +1

      @Fozia Khan Yeah it's a really amazing drug for the issues surrounding mood and emotion, it made me very tired as well, I think maybe you'll relate when I say, it made me feel a very cozy tired, I remember thinking, maybe this tiredness is from all the nights I couldn't sleep and yeah for the most part it helped me fall asleep but I did find, I was napping sometimes during the day.
      I also had no focus, energy or motivation, I did end up googling it and I found, the medication isn't meant to help with those things. Someone made a good point on the forms I was reading "What you think you can just take some pill and get motivated to do things you don't want to do?" Lol
      For me, personally my life is a bit to hectic, I'm in college studying Applied Computing: Game Development, I have kids, a partner, 2 dogs and I'm transitioning into becoming Co-Owner of a game development studio so yeah the medication just didn't help me in the ways I needed it to and actually I nearly threw in the towel on all of my ideas because I could live up to the standard I needed to, in order to achieve the things that truly bring me joy.
      As far as stimulants, the first week I started on Ritalin, 1 pill a day (10mg) in the morning, in those mornings, I would do all of the chores that I out off doing for weeks and that usually would take me hours to do in minutes. Week 2 my dose was up to 2 pills, 1 pill at 9am (10mg) and 1 pill at 3pm (10mg), I started to get back into my college work (I though I was going to have to drop out of college when Stattera wasn't helping me cope). Now I'm on 3 pills, I take one at 9am, 3pm and 9pm and yeah I'm just working non-stop, I've nearly caught up to work on a lot of modules.
      There have been side effects, Ritalin has like peaks and falls, so when I take it at 9am say, at 10am, the medication peaks, usually it makes me extremely happy and content and it gives me so much energy to do stuff. But then by about 2pm, I'm starting to get unfocused and tired, not to the point of wanting to sleep just to the point of the general tiredness I feel when not medicated. But then 3pm comes, I take the second does and by 4pm I'm back up and working again. So yeah that's the pecks with Ritalin, other stimulant medication, I've heard works smoother and there's no peaks associated with it.
      Other side effects I've gotten, decreased appetite, slight irritability not like extreme anger but just moments of snappy-ness but it's easily forgot about and sometimes a weird sort of anxiety, like if I'm tired taking my 3rd dose at 9pm it can feel like I'm high on cocaine, but since taking Ritalin, it's actually helping me sleep because I'm tired as soon as it wears off, so the only issues with my sleep pattern now is due to my kids (They're all under 6 so they really like to not sleep when they're supposed to). But yeah I thinking as well, over the summer when I'm not going to be swamped in college work, I might even take just 2 a day (Going to talk to my doctor about it next time I meet with him) but yeah, another big reply from me 😅
      But it's just so you can have some insight and also for anyone who might be looking for answers and comes across this comment 🙂
