  • In this video I’m moving Linda, but will she fit under the bridges.
    These are the lowest bridges on this section of the navigation. If I make it under these I will be able to make it to my intended destination.

    I'm catching up on episodes and happened to have just eaten a large Christmas dinner just before watching this. On reflection, it's not the best idea to have a full stomach for such full-on tension for almost half an hour. Thank goodness for the 'laughing at water ballet' ending. I realise my adrenalin levels are possibly lower than yours were... 😅😂but phew... it was all OK in the end. 👏

    Hi Canice brought back memories when i used to go under Hammersmith bridge on the Tug I worked on,Split the canvas on top of the wheelhouse a few times on High water Springs, the bridge bounces two inches when a Bus goes over it. Cheers

    • @canicebannon
      @canicebannon  Před 2 lety

      Wow! That’s a bit of information that explains a lot! Hammersmith Bridge as you may know is controversial as it needs a major refurbishment and the government and the local council are arguing about whose going to pay for it! Meanwhile they close the river to river traffic over safety concerns under the bridge. I’m imagining they don’t want anymore bridge strikes, but it never occurred to me that a bus driving overhead would lower the draft! 😂😂😂
      I hope to make the journey myself! I might wait until spring! Just for an exciting video!😂😂😂

    Maybe for the way back fix up a ratchet strap to pull down on the end of the mast? Also a little “flag” on the counter weight would warn you, fit or no fitty. I’ll also bet you could fit a wedge to the top side of the mast and just power through bridges that are too low?? Top quality content though :)

    I thought happy Orthodox Jews on bikes and shy Orthodox Jews on foot, graceful swans and greedy swans, aqueducts and weirs and leaky locks and supportive witnesses and tiny cars on towpaths was a remarkable amount of color for one moving day. I thought "Canice has become the Hitchcock of canal boat vloggers" as I cursed the breakaway to the day before. I thought I might have--maybe--peed my pants just a little when the bridge cut into the varnish of the mast. I thought we were safe once the mast went back up. But no! The go pro is overboard, Canice does water ballet, the possibility of leeches evidently lurks in the Lee Navigation, and my adrenal glands splutter out. I've never been relieved to reach the end of your post before. You mad Irishman. Do the BAFTAs have a category for vlog posts?

    More ballast! you'll need it when using sails anyway. Probably airdrafts of most waterways are known, so you can trim her to have as much freedom as possible.
    My impression was that Dutch skippers would hit full throttle a bit earlier, like a few meters from the bridge for more effect. You can test it when going under a bridge with a flat bottom and see if the highest point dips more near the end of the passage.
    These video's are mesmerizing!

    • @canicebannon
      @canicebannon  Před 2 lety

      The air draft on the website is sort of stated on the canals. However, they base it on the edges/sides of the roof, so that if it’s a humpback bridge you’re not measuring the middle and highest point and crashing into the side of the arch. For me the highest point is in the middle!
      But on the Lee the low bridges are generally flat. I was aware of the low bridge in advance but not really sure of what Linda’s draft is.
      You’re right about the Dutch skippers powering up much earlier, but I’m no way that brave! Yet! Naturally, I will ballast in the future, but the big change will be the 800kgs of water that will soon be going in….
      That’s a really good idea on how to test the drop. Also the question is whether it’s sustained. I suspect though (talking out my arse here) that the longer the boat the more pronounced the sea saw action is….
      I did test it in a lock, but I haven’t seen the footage yet. But I did conclude that testing Linda in a confined space will lead to asphyxiation!😂

    Superb Canice,
    Lovely vlog.
    Curiosity has got the better of me. I gather from previous episodes that you have some “acting background” in you, whether formal or informal, but going on your professional and interesting productions I am curious as to whether you have training in videography/production or are you self taught?
    I am sure that, along with many other of your subscribers, I would be very interested in how you put a typical episode together. As a one man band (apart that is from the Sea Captain, Stilson and any other stowaways you may have) setting up the various shots, etc. must be quite involved. A little while ago Peter Knowles from Canada, on his boat restoration channel “Travels with Geordie”, showed how he put an episode together and it was fascinating to see how much is involved.
    Keep up the good work.
    Regards
    Mark Barge M V Sarah.

      @canicebannon  Před 2 lety

      Hi Mark!
      I’m a classical trained actor. Bristol Old Vic Theatre School.
      However, the real work is done in the edit. It’s a very long process, where I shoot loads of stuff and then cut it all back. Takes a day. I have always been interested in filming and acting from a young age and bought my first camera at 17 or 18. All of what I’ve done is self taught.
      But is there is a style, that comes from me thinking, would I watch this…
      I have learned through the channel that the more time you have on the post production the better the video.
      Time is the biggest problem. I have to work to earn money, work on the boat to fix the boat and then work on the editing. That’s a lot of work……😩😂😂😂

    • @markk4285
      @markk4285 Před 2 lety

      Hi Canice and thanks for that.
      Well the time taken really pays off. The slightly madcap approach draws one in (no offence intended).
      On the time front, when people asked me why it was taking so long to restore my boat my standard reply was that I either had the time and no money (not working gainfully) or the money and no time. Could be a bind.
      Keep up the good work.

    Could you remove the bracket that sticks up? I'm sorry, I know it's frustrating when people offer solutions that you've no doubt already tossed around 500 things in your noggin. Also yeah a ratchet strap to pull the mast down a bit. Also OMG CANICE do not put parts of your body between unstoppable forces and immovable objects!!!

      Hahaha! I had edited out quite a lot of very poor hand placements in the video. I’m actually sorting out the bracket this week and some other things regarding the mast and lines. Update coming soon!
      Thankfully I welcome any advice. I know nothing!😂

      @@canicebannon I admire your persistence and tenacity and dedication to character but I think a captain hook style hand would be taking things ever so slightly too far.
