Random thought while watching your video, I wish someone had a pedal that made and electric sound as close to an acoustic as these do. Never thought about how they are basically electric guitars with good effects on board.
I totally get where you’re coming from but it works the other way round. There are pedals that make electric guitars sound like acoustics but not the other way. But in this case it’s really about the strings. The body on a full acoustic obviously is the main part of its sound. But in the case of the SLG, not so much. But if you put electric guitar strings onto this guitar it would sound more like electric guitar with the added bonus of the acoustic pickups and preamp. BUT…. Then you have to think that you can’t really do that on the nylon strung version you would miss the point and… it’s not built for that sort of string tension, so I wouldn’t advise it…. Also, with an electric you must take the pickups, which are VERY different from the bridge transducer and body transducer with the preamp on the SLGs. Electric pickup are so vastly different that putting acoustic stings like phosphor bronze etc just would be quite right…. So, either way round…. You’re caught between a ‘ROCK’ & ‘ROLL’ and maybe a hard case… Clear as mud? Maybe a follow up video on this is warranted. What do you all think.? Thanks for stoppin n poppin in. Thanks for review, but I got a question. Previously I already had SLG 200s, but I sold it after I moved to a good isolated flat and lived alone. Now live with my girlfriend and I think to buy it again. The issue is that my flat has 2 rooms separated by WC/Bad (Room 1 - WC/Bad - Room 2), but there are no doors at all. This is why I'm taking a look on a Nylon version and I wanted classical guitar anyways :) Questio is, do you think that slg 200 N version will help in my case in comparison with slg 200 S? Probably if I will hard strumming, no, but if soft fingerstyle playing? Just learning something like tremolo or training songs like game of thrones, last of us etc...? It is more like tapping the top of a mic and has no usable tone imho m. Thanks for the question and keeping the discussion going 👍🏻
Something else you missed. Can you play it without the top bout attached? (I have limited mobility in my right shoulder and need a very narrow body guitar to keep my shoulder down and my elbow tight into my hip) And...does it have any amplifier/speaker built into the back (like some of the Yamaha acoustics do) or do you have to lug around an amp for anyone else to hear it? I would hardly call it a "travel" guitar if you can't perform with it without an amp.
WillForsberg thanks for watching and to answer your questions, I have not so much missed but of course it doesn’t answer for your particular use case. I did say that it has a headphone output. But I certainly would have said if it has a built in speaker, which it does not. As for the top portion, yes you can indeed use it without it. The strap pins can be screwed in with or without it in place. Although I thought it the guitar becomes a little unbalanced.
@@atv-c0m Thank you for the quick reply. I liked your video review of the guitar. Regarding marketing speak. I have one of those carbon fibre like round back guitar. When I put it on a stand I don't hear the sound of clapping despite the fact I now have a 'Standing Ovation' ... (though they also do an Applause Version to be fair) ... Curiously they don't do an STD version ... I guess the Ovation 'Clap' wouldn't go down very well, specially for guitarists trying to errr? 'scratch' for a living. Thanks.
Both the bridge piezo and amp body pickups are the same in both types as are the effects o. Them. I wouldn’t swap the stings as the neck, but and bridge configurations are different and would render the playing experience not very desirable imho. But good point. Thank you for contributing to this ongoing discussion 👍🏻
They are electric guitars with piezo pickups and build-in preamp and effects. That's what they really are. The S version plays and sounds like a steel-string acoustic, the N is more like a classical guitar. They are *named* "Silent Guitar". A guitar that is completely silent (i.e. making no noise when played) is physically not possible. A vibrating string will always make at least some sound.
B Rumm actually that is a false observation as an acoustic and a classical guitar both have sound holes, where these do not. Therefore they can produce amplified volume on their own. Whereas these do not. But they are still not silent so to speak. But because on their own they are not amplified in any way, that is why they are called silent. Thanks for watching and continuing the debate 👍🏻
I wouldn’t say these are electric guitars at all. They play and sound like acoustic guitars. They are very different. An electric guitar feels quite different in a side by side comparison.
We have to understand that terms used are sometimes technically defined as compared to their definitions in the dictionary. Better ask the Yamaha why they called it "silent" to better understand the definition.
Did people really think that they would be entirely silent? You can't make a guitar entirely silent. Even without a sound chamber, the strings still vibrate. Sound waves are vibrations. It's going to make a sound. Really wanna get this guitar either way. Looks amazing and is versatile. Not looking forward to dropping $750 for the classical model (I prefer the wider neck and nylon strings) but it'll last me for years to come.
There is also thing called engineering. They shouldn't have called it "silent" super misleading. People living in apartments with family members can't play any of these guitars.
Thank you for the video; I'm thinking of getting this because I live in an apartment, and I'm an asshole who likes to play guitar whenever I feel like it (even if that is 2 am 🙄). Neighbors have complained 🤣🤣🤣🤣
In vonclusion, the hole guitar is silent, but the strings are not! Instead of your feigned surprise this guitar makes sound, could you compare the percieved vol of the Yamaha vs the Tele, unplugged?
First... thanks for your effort. "Silent", like all other words used in marketing, don't really mean the same as when language is employed in everyday usage. Like, for example... "freedom" or "democracy" . Rhetoric in relation to language is a studied without end.
Not really as a harp has all notes available assigned to a string. Whereas a guitar is mostly a fretted instrument (unless fretless) but even then a note has to be pressed not just plucked.
Really? SMH... Thanks for the video... Obviously the goal of this guitar is to allow someone to practice wherever there is a chance at pissing off people who really don't want to hear you practice. My brother is notorious for pissing off the neighbors as well as ME when he blast that snhit... It's effen IRRITATING AF!!! He's good but not that effen good... This is a fantastic option to alleviate that problem. Personal self contained joys of music with out getting kicked out of the house, apartment, hotel or any other place you feel the need for speed when the people around you just aren't into rocking all night and partying every day!!!
The reason they are called silent guitars is because there is no chance of feedback when played on stage or with pedals. Regular acoustic guitars with pedals feedback like crazy. This is yamaha s perfect stage guitar with no feedback.
Sean you know nothing about guitars.solid body acoustics do not feed back. I am certain I own 3 different solid ody acoustics and they don't feedback when on stage.
It's so strange, that guitar is totally incredible with all the features it has. Silent is not one of the features of that guitar. Whomever st Yamaha named that guitar should be publicly executed or forced to commit harakiri. The name should've been about some or one of the incredible features it has, not the lame feature it doesn't have. I'm going to buy one and figure out a cool descriptive name for it!
Wrong comparison my friend!!!! your comparison should be only: 1)Electric guitar, with no plug 2)silent guitar, with no plug By plugging an amplifier, is NOT silent anymore and your presentation is floating....🚣
I own a SLG200S and my wife appreciate the silent ness of the guitar. This guitar saves marriages. What did you expect? Pluck a string and produce no sound at all? You think Yamaha is misleading us using the word Silent? So you made a video to advise people??? You have to understand the concept of travel guitar silent enough to not bother other people in hotel’s room or lobby while you travel. Maybe you should have remain silent for this one 😉. By the way, you don’t have to unscrew completely strap button to remove the upper part, that way you won’t lose them. Just saying.
Not to be funny here, but I'm sure you understand sarcasm, satire and irony. These videos after the very first one are all about how there is no real way of them being completely silent. These videos (other than the first) were never meant to be taken too seriously. I thought I'd got that across in my manner. I guess my sarcasm is far subtler than I have always imagined it to be... Thanks for continuing the conversation. This is what CZcams should be about...

Hi, great video! I am thinking on buying one. How does it sound through headphones? Cheers!
I have an early SLG-100 steel string - it sound marvelous.
We have to understand that terms used are sometimes technically defined as compared to their definitions in the dictionary.
Better ask the Yamaha why they called it "silent" to better understand the definition.
Is it usable for some rock if you use a distortion pedal of some sort? No feedback like a typical acoustic/electric?
I would say.... ish.... czcams.com/video/DrWocvT5PhY/video.html
@@atv-c0m thank you for this video.
@@odessit777 glad you liked it my friend
I run mine into my cranked up Marshall or my Katana 50 on brown sound. No feedback.
What is the nut width on the steel string?
Did people really think that they would be entirely silent? You can't make a guitar entirely silent. Even without a sound chamber, the strings still vibrate. Sound waves are vibrations. It's going to make a sound.
Really wanna get this guitar either way. Looks amazing and is versatile. Not looking forward to dropping $750 for the classical model (I prefer the wider neck and nylon strings) but it'll last me for years to come.
I know right? It's called physics.
It's perfect for players like you. You'll love either one.
Yamaha is a great company
In vonclusion, the hole guitar is silent, but the strings are not!
Instead of your feigned surprise this guitar makes sound, could you compare the percieved vol of the Yamaha vs the Tele, unplugged?
Play them without a pick, play arpeggios with your fingers and see how it goes...
First... thanks for your effort. "Silent", like all other words used in marketing, don't really mean the same as when language is employed in everyday usage. Like, for example... "freedom" or "democracy" . Rhetoric in relation to language is a studied without end.
I think 'Mostly Quieter Guitar' was already taken.
YES! I love it!!
Is a guitar really a six string harp?
Again, another good point and a reason to buy one. Thanks for that
Check out...carry on my wayward son Kansas cover yamaha skg200s
Sean you know nothing about guitars.solid body acoustics do not feed back. I am certain I own 3 different solid ody acoustics and they don't feedback when on stage.
Nice
Thank you
4:55 5th anniversary or 5th wife?😜
hahahha 5th Anniversary - 2nd wife
If you can't hear anything, you're deaf.
MISSED KEY FEATURE: I love my SLG200s and consider it "Silent" due to absolutely zero feedback no matter what you plug into, unlike all other guitars.
A very good point, we’ll made and I agree. Thanks for popping in and for your contribution to our little debate
Purity Music: There’s no such thing as a silent guitar.
Air Guitar: Hold my beer.
Yes I know. Watch my other videos you will see I am aware but I think Yamaha are not. Lol
If you hit something it won't be silent, it's a silly name for an even sillier guitar...
I agree totally with the "if you hit something", but these guitars are very good. They sound and play fantastic IMHO.
I'm going to buy one and figure out a cool descriptive name for it!
why did I waste my time here.
I dont know but I’m glad you did
Wrong comparison my friend!!!!
your comparison should be only:
1)Electric guitar,with no plug
2)silent guitar,with no plug
By plugging an amplifier, is NOT silent anymore and your presentation is floating....🚣
What a joke.
Your point is dopey?
The questions were dopey, but he answered them anyway to shut them up.
Sylvain Babin I think you have misunderstood the reasons for this video. 1. I was asked. 2. I was being sarcastic! Plus it was fun to do
Super gay dude... and not in the good way.
sorry?
what! do you want? no sound ? that is a good amount of silence. I agree to @sgtjoe2008's comment on this vid
