  • Many of you will remember Frank Lopez from the piece I did on him a few months ago. In addition to being an extremely talented photographer, Frank heads up the photography program at Greenhill School in Dallas, TX. Frank has started a new class with his colleague Chad Bittenbender who teaches chemistry. Together they oversee a semester of experimental work from students. All projects start with an idea or concept and then begin a process of learning and experimentation with various chemical processes.
The impressive part of all of this is that these are high school students. Most universities are not working this extensively with wet process as most have closed their darkrooms for the ease of digital work.
Special thanks to Frank Lopez and Chad Bittenbender, Greenhill School and the enormously talented students there for allowing me to come film and talk about what they are working on.

    AWESOME!!!
Personally give Frank and Chad a huge high five from me! As a father and a photographer, the idea that there are still teachers out there like that, is at the very least inspiring.
    Thank you Ted

Thank you so much for posting this video!
I wonder if people really get just how amazing this *integrated studies* program is. It's a perfect example of the sum equalling more that the individual parts. And while it seems like a no-brainer for high schools and colleges to combine these kinds of classes for a deeper understanding of both, it is surprisingly rare that it actually happens.
I am not only sincerely impressed, I am quite jealous. Outstanding!

i really loved this. when i first began high school they had just gotten rid of their photography class. i really wish they didn't have. every school needs classes like this to keep the youth focused on fulfilling their creative potential

i think Texas in general is a place to be for creative photography. Great inspiration for other schools and colleges. If we could get this support in all areas just imagine the things we could come up with....it's a shame so little people care.

I'm SO envious of this school and those like them. I can only imagine how different the first 10 years of my life would've been if I'd graduated from a school like this, with teachers like these. Thanks Ted.

    What superb collaboration.
I will always be in debt to an art teacher I had in High school which had a great impact on me. I never forgot him and my guess is that those talented kids will never forget Frank and Chad.
These bring back memories. In high school we had a photo club, ran by the students, and the local and darkroom was just in front of the art class. One of my friend collaborated with a photo club’s member to present an animated film with moving clay figurines as an art project which was well honored.
I would like to see more of this type of collaboration between teachers and art students. There are unlimited possibilities. I learned more about ancient history in my art class than in my history course. So here’s another path that may be considered among teachers.
A very special video. I tip my hat to Frank and Chad - Good work guys!

Truly amazing and inspirational. It is great to see todays generation bexome interested in fine art and photography as a medium. These kids have great talent and I wish the absolute best for them in their future endeavors. Thank you Ted for taking the time to put this together and sharing it with us.

Phenomenal, I would have loved to take a class like this. Hopefully Greenhill and others like them will serve to be national examples of the value of programs like this. Thanks for sharing it with us, Ted.

Ted, thank you for bringing this great program to your online community. Frank & Chad are the kind of teachers I wish every child had the opportunity to work with. This is classic example of S.T.E.A.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math) in action. Our schools need more programs like this, and less focus on standardized testing and scores. I want MORE! It would be great if you could do a follow-up series drilling into the various techniques being used/discovered and the chemistry that makes them work.

    Ted,
Why don't you suggest to Chad and Frank the idea of drawing in a teacher of Physics to cover the aspects of optics, and light and also a teacher of Mathematics to address the application of formula and mathematics in understanding photography ?
Photography can be a stepping stone and bridge into all these field of study.

What annoyed me about my college (in the uk you go from college into university) they scrapped the analogue photography stuff the year after i left, so i can't be TOO annoyed. Because i felt the benefit, but i know there will be years where they don't.
Partly costs, and partly for lack of interest. Which is a little silly, because if you make it compulsory, guaranteed at least 80% of people will enjoy it, or take something from it.
They had enough for £20,000 in computers for the photography/graphics department. But not the £100 a term for chemicals.
But aside from that its great that a college is willing to take a bit of a gamble, as i'm sure this course isn't cheap. And teach what they love, and their enthusiasm can only rub off on the students.
