Every time I see a burst getting laid down with dye, I have a little "oh no! Its not going to blend" moment... Then they always come around at the end.
Tobacco burst finish is killer when you burn it back n forth into the colors and take Hairs and run streaks . Kinda like a old weather fence where colors fade into one another
I noticed him, too, and being a blues fan, I saw he was groovin’ hard on one song. Daddy D’s gonna have to make him a mini-Strat to get him started. Tobacco burst all the way, of course.
Dig it. Stain Master D. Finish would look good on a JD barrel guitar too. I realize rough nature of the wood for those guitars probably makes that difficult or impossible. Just a thought.
Try my stain for that tobacco dark brown .. use 2 blocks of plug tobacco crumble them up put the tabacco into a womans nylon not tight like a ball but loose knot the nylon take a mason jar drop the nylon tea bag in fill to 1 inch from top with ammonia. Cap it and let it set for 3 weeks . Then remove tea bag of tobacco squeeze all the juices into mason jar and test color .. if you want it darker replace the bag of tobacco for another week .. for my knife handles like ash id take a tsp of asphalt emultion to darken to the deep brown I wanted .. dont worry it wont wreck the finish and laquer wont bubble .
With those colors you are using, do you need to do a clear coat? I have a Fender Precision bass that is a Highway One series that didn't come with a clear coat and love it. I want to try and do the same to get that 2 or 3 color burst. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.
I do find vintage tobacco bursts rather boring, but... at around 9:30 that finish looked almost as bad as a recent Gibson "stock photo" finish, and at 11:00 with the extra coat of yellow it's a whole lot more vibrant. Guess that's what Gibsons are missing, haha. Maybe you could have added even a second coat of yellow at the end ? or wouldn't that have helped ?
Very cool finish - looks great. Curious - do you wipe on due to lack of spray equipment, ease of application, or some other reason? (I wiped dye in my first after watching some of your vids and it came out great but the sprayed nitro...curious about pros and cons)
If i want to do this on an alder body guitar, do i have to "treat" the wood with anything before using the dye, or is the dying going directly on the wood? and when i am finished with the dye, do i have to use any finishing product or concealer?
I did a burst like that watching your videos and wanted to thank you for your great tutorials , I have a question will i be able to lock in the colors using just tru-oil or using sending sealer first its a must ?
So you can use that dye w/o doing the after spray like you did on the burst ? I've got an alder body with a wide flame maple top Was liking that chocolate LoL Thanks love the show and do you stain bodies for customers:?
BigDGuitars - Big D, will you show us what the guitar looks like once it's sealed and oiled? I think most of your viewers would enjoy seeing the finish product of all your creations.. I know I would.
purchase the dyes here: angelusdirect.com/?rfsn=566896.75dad582
I really prefer the stained vs the sprayed burst. Thanks for the lesson!

For you!
yeaaaa :)
Thank you for theses videos, they really help me to know what colors to use to get my Desired affect.
Is there a picture of this guitar with final finish and hardware installed?
i love how nervous i get when you do this at first i think it looks like shit then bam perfect everytime
haha. sandpaper fixes it all
It's like watching Bob Ross do paintings. It's like "No Bob no you going to wreck it!!! Aahhh perfect..."
That looks AMAZING!! You are so good at building and making guitars look great🤘
I restore furniture and use mineral spirits to lighten or dilute stain on the wood so it can be blended into darker color stain. Good job here!!
Nice !!! I see you had a lil helper with you there !! he he he :)
yea he wanted to watch today, maybe he will take an interest
that would be cool if he did !! :)

Is there a continuation to this video ?

Just amazing....👍👍👍 I whish I could do that on my acoustic guitar project....... thanks!!

Beautiful
Do you do any finishing over the dyes or is that final?
Any grain filler or sanding before dye?
Turned out fantastic! To lock in that color with an oil finish would you add a Poly/ TruOil blend over that?
What if you wanna do it on swamp ash? Need any more preparation?
What kind of lacquer you can spray on it?
Thanks and it is an awsome job!

Hi from sunny old England, is there any chance you could do a tobacco burst on a flamed maple top using the same leather dyes please. Thanks

Without lacquer on top it won't pop. So the second coat of yellow isn't necessary; the finish will make the color stand out even more :)

He also does sprayed. But rubbed on stains really are his stuff.

Yes - same question about finishing.
Do you oil it afterward? What do you do to it prior to the buildout? Can you link to pics?
any specific type of steel wool?
Very good video! My next project is to make a Höfner- bass (McCartney style) from an unfinished kit. Which Angelus dyes should I use?
Looks nice. When you say you used a vacuum to clean it up, is that the method to pick up all the steel wool shavings? Can it get stuck in the grain?

How would you finish this guitar? Tru-oil?
Time for another kit.... tobacco without the burst tho just deep color
Im curious about creating stained oils using Windsor Newton oil paints mixed with TruOil. Have you ever done a guitar finish with stained oils?
if i want to do the same burst color, should i skip the brown and stick to chocolate, black & yellow?
Would you treat this any different if it were a flame maple top?
Love this video! Do I need to fill the grain on a mahogany body before doing this process?
Very nice work! Which grade of steel wool did you use?
Do you bleach your alder first?
How much dye do you need for one dye job on this tele? Is the 3 oz bottle enough if a 4 dye burst is used?
Sean Cooney one 3oz bottle lasts for a few guitars.
2:03 sin color chocolate , mas amarillo
What kinda clear coat do you use?
I will sanding sealer and truoil it
