  • Now that we're spending our winter living in our RV in Salt Lake City and skiing in the nearby Wasatch Mountains, we've been asked many times recently about the camping opportunities close to Utah's capital city, the Crossroads of the West. In this episode of Grand Adventure we take a detailed look at the four closest RV parks to Salt Lake City -- three in the Salt Lake Valley, and one in nearby Park City.

    Welcome to Grand Adventure, a CZcams channel that focuses on RV-centric outdoor activities including not only of course camping, but also mountain biking, hiking, kayaking, skiing and more, always filmed in stunning 4K.
    We're based in Salt Lake City, Utah during the winter months, and invite you to come along as we travel all around the U.S. My wife Patricia and I, and dog Zoe are avid boondockers, so while you'll occasionally find us in RV parks or even dry campgrounds, we're usually camped in some of the most remote and beautiful spots that you could ever pull a travel trailer into. We've now transitioned from "long-timing" for six months a year, to living and traveling in our RV full-time.
    We'll provide beautiful travel videos, as well as some tips and insight on trip planning, and equipping and maintaining your RV to make your next adventure a grand one indeed! So, subscribe to make sure that you catch every episode, and remember...life is nothing but a Grand Adventure!

      @@darisanshanger1616 the people here are salt-of-the-earth types, a very independent spirit that understands self-sufficiency and helping your neighbors at the same time. The topography varies from 13,000-foot snow-capped mountain peaks to red rock deserts, and everything in between. Home to 5 famed National Parks: Zion, Canyonlands, Arches, Capitol Reef and Bryce Canyon. Euros flock to Utah for a taste of the Wild West that they've only seen in John Wayne movies. The Utah Ski & Snowboard Association has trademarked the phrase "Greatest Snow on Earth" for a reason. Of the roughly 3.5 million people in the state, 2.5 million live in a roughly 50-mile x 10-mile stretch along the Wasatch Front from Ogden through Salt Lake to Provo -- the rest of the state is delightfully uninhabited. Utah is roughly 2/3 public lands between BLM, USFS and NPS. Add in state trust lands and it's roughly 80% public land for recreation.

    Not bad looking for a KOA. But that price? Great amenities and location but we don’t do amenities. Nice that long term is separate. This second one has no trees? Again, amenities not our thing. Wow. That price for the third park. Yikes. Some of those sites look like you are right on top of each other. I couldn’t trust my dog off lease- bad owners 😅 Wow. Look at that snow in that third campground. %40 off some campgrounds with Dyrt. That’s pretty cool.

I hear every time her furnace kicks on. 😄 Thankfully we have hardly any windows on that side, but despite the spacing and despite the price this really did turn out to be our first choice, both for location and for the folks running the place. At least we have a decent plot of grass on our patio side, many other folks in other sites can't say that. And yes, check out The Dyrt PRO! Thank you! There's not much up there in winter. You can boondock in the parking lot at the otherwise closed Jordanelle State Park czcams.com/video/wToGtMMUAV4/video.html , or there is Park City RV Resort in Kimball Junction. There's a small RV park below the dam at Jordanelle, but they are seasonal only in winter to accommodate ski resort workers. There's probably an RV park or two in Heber Valley, but I have never looked into that. Finally, temperatures in winter are much more moderate in the Salt Lake Valley than they are in the Park City area. It's almost worth commuting up there if that's where you want to ski.

We'll be filming the installation of everything for our viewers. At the moment we have 190W of Go Power solar on the roof and a 1200W Xantrex pure sine wave inverter from the KZ factory, and two cheap wet-cell 12V batteries installed by the dealer. By the time we're done we'll have 590W of solar on the roof (400W of which will be from Renogy on tilting mounts), 300 Ah from three Battle Born LiFePO4 batteries, and a new converter that's actually intended to charge lithium.

The first box of supplies arrived today and I will have everything except for the lithium batteries here by Monday. First up will be the solar panel install - it should be fairly easy because I already have one panel up there, so all the wiring is already there. My biggest challenges will be getting the panels up into the roof (I don't expect Mrs GA to be any help there 😄), and getting past the terror of drilling holes in the roof and installing the correct fasteners. Wow! I can't believe you got into Mountain Shadows for the winter, or that crazy rent price. We have been on their long term waiting list for 3 yrs. and was quoted 650. They called us just last week after the long wait, but we are now headed to New Hampshire for our first workamping job at the end of the month, so too little too late. We stayed in the Sky View Mobile Home/RV park in Sandy, and they kept upping our rent every year from 600 to 800. We are anxious to start our new adventure. Thanks for sharing.

      @GrandAdventure  Před 3 lety +1

      I think that COVID allowed us to get our foot in the door at Mountain Shadows, and we now have a standing reservation for next winter, too. Agreed that the rent is insane, but by the time you get past the fine print that details all the extra utility charges, etc., it's not much more than the VIP Campground adjacent to the KOA. $650 is Mountain Shadows' year-round rate, they apparently jack the rate in winter due to the proximity to the ski resorts. It's almost impossible to get info on Sky View, so I'd be curious to hear your feedback on your time there in addition to the jacking of the rates. And best wishes for your new workamping job in NH!

      @@GrandAdventure The manager here is nice and easy to talk to most of the time. The landlords are a real estate company in California and not as easy to get along with. We will not be sorry to leave here. It also looks like they are transitioning to make it just a mobile home park. The bigger lots are getting homes put in as the trailers leave. They still have a few smaller spots for trailers in the front but wont fit the bigger rigs. Their excuse of raising the rates was cost of maintenance and upkeep...A lot of people left when they raised it again last year.

    • @GrandAdventure
      @GrandAdventure  Před 3 lety +1

      Some of the spots are admittedly pretty tight, Jesse. Our neighbor is close enough that we can hear her furnace fire up from inside our trailer. However, both of us have hardly any windows facing each other and we have a decent yard on our patio side where nearly all our windows face. Our monthly rate also comes to ~$30/day, which is far cheaper than our former sticks-and-bricks house. Once we get back on the road, boondocking is free. But even for an overnight stay it's great to be able to pull your house with you. Nothing to pack, no public areas to share. There are pros and cons with everything.

    Great video! I have driven by that RV park every time I go to Camping World and each time I wonder what it's like. Now I know! We are based in Saratoga Springs and are having a blast exploring our local area this winter. I am going to head out to Antelope Island to do some filming soon! How is your new 5th wheel holding up this winter? Thanks again.

      Happy to inform, SVA! Antelope Island is really cool, especially at this time of year as the biting sand fleas that are prevalent out there are still in hiding. The new fiver is doing great, thanks for asking. We're still finishing up our upgrades for the upcoming travel season (including more solar and a lithium battery upgrade), and before we leave in April we have some damage to get repaired that was caused by my own stupidity 😡 but we're overall very pleased by Durango's product.

    How many of these campgrounds are wheelchair accessible and ADA friendly? With some of these campgrounds that you have mentioned that have gravel would not be nice if you have a power chair and it would be nice to find campgrounds where there is public transit to and from the airport/downtown areas not only in Utah but around the country? It would be nice to find campgrounds that will either help a disabled person set up camp with not only their own camp gear but would have an option to include everything right down to the sleeping bag, air mattress/cot, right down to all of the food and fixings to order, and tent and/or have some sort of cabin set up?

    • @GrandAdventure
      @GrandAdventure  Před 2 lety +1

      Adam, the KOA would work well with a wheelchair -- no gravel, asphalt pads and concrete patios, and a TRAX light rail stop on the line into downtown right outside the front entrance.

    Do they get snow in the valley, where you're located?

    • @GrandAdventure
      @GrandAdventure  Před 3 lety +1

      Thanks Gord! We do get snow in the valley, although not that much. We average only around 50-55 inches in the Valley and what falls here disappears in a matter of hours; however, only 10 miles to the east (and up to 7,000 feet higher in elevation) they average well over 500 inches each winter season. For a skier that makes this place one of the best of both worlds: not much to shovel, but world-class snow mere minutes away.

    Can you actually see downtown SLC from from your trailer site? Or is that an overlay?

      Gord, I overlaid the photo of the trailer on top of a photo of downtown that I shot from Redwood Road near one of the parks that we filmed for this episode.
