I love the return to the analog tach!! I think this sort of display with the speed on a digital screen for easy and quick reading is the best combo.
Those hybrid types like analog plus digital like how the kawasaki ninja H2sx had is more fitted for a motorcycle for me
Well there you have it. The perfect naked road bike. Just finished my 2019 R review and the only thing that was missing was a QS. Nice video as always.
Cheers RBD - hope you're well
Yeah, but now it's "missing" the TFT screen... it should at least be an option.
@@rizzorides2490 This, and Triumph updating the trim levels differently over multiple years is confusing without doing some digging.
I have a 2010 675 STR with Quickshifter, Arrow3-1, Ohlins TR805 shock with KyleUsa linear linkage. No ABS, no slipper clutch, no TFT display, no rider 'modes', no IMU etc. Yet after 55,000 fun filled kilometers I am still alive! Amazing. Yeah, for the money the new R model is the sweetest street bike you can buy IMO.
What do I want eletronic gadgets for ?? I ride a bike !! If I wanted that stuff I'd drive a car !
i dont want it either on a car
Ragimund VonWallat get behind the wheel of a tesla model s and you might not mind having one in the garage next to your gas powered motor vehicles my friend, trust me👍
@@neliuskyr4993 Yes but NOT ON a MOTORCYCLE !
Peter Koning IT'S THE FUTURE.........so accept it, don't ride, or buy an old ass 1960's era bike buddy.
Usually we hear people taking about why they don't want 'electronics' on bikes, but most the time it's just bluster! Blah blah "I'm a purist", blah blah... "my right hand is the electronics..." it's old and it's boring! If this tech was available back in the 40's 50's 60's etc... they most definitely would have fitted it!! End of.
Street Triple R with the TFT display please. I'm all for analog dials, but the turn by turn navigation alone is already more important to me.
Simply buy the RS !!!
I greatly prefer the "lack" of tech on the R. I like the analog tech version better and I never use app connectivity for anything.
Yes, much prefer the old style clocks without all the high tech gizzmos.
peter collen totally agree, I have a 2019 street triple RS and not a fan of the TFT , miss the clocks on my old 2012 STR
I stick with the Speed Twin 😉: power, torque, handling... all what you expect from a Triumph, nothing else!
Those who call me while I ride have to wait until I call’em back
@@Fr99763 beautiful bike man. Which color scheme do you have?
Dirk Diggler : Thanks. Color is red. I like the color and I had looked up the history of the Speed Twin and it turned out they were all red since the start in 1937
The digital TFT on my RS is a true nightmare
When people complained about the electronics... The last thing was an improved nice tft screen .. I rather get a 2019 street triple r and add the quick shifter and down blipper
So hyped for this bike!!! I loved the analog dials and now they are back!! Lets goo!!!!
It has ABS, traction control and up-down quickshifter, looks great, sounds amazing, 3 riding modes, great suspension and braking components. The dash might feel dated but there is a certain feel and pleasure to see the analog tachometer needle rev till the redline. I'll go with the R! Use that extra cash for riding more.
You're so right !! This 765 R has very good value for money !
Speed Tripple R is the real deal. It should be the man and the machine.
Coming from a '15 ST675R owner: the dash in the RS model is one of the best displays among the current competition. Removing it from the R model is a terrible decision.
Definitely want that Turn by turn when I can do my first euro trip
Would go for the RS. But prefer the paintwork of the R.
With you there, not keen on all the grey accents on the RS, kind of reminds me of when Apple introduced 'Space Grey' to iPhones even though the black was better.
been eyeing 2020 RS, but love the R paintwork!
100% the red and black looks awesome
Good move by Triumph to cater for wider market. Had 3 675 street triples previously and when I switched bikes I went mt07 for basic dash as not a tft fan. Street triple back on the radar now 😀
i would not mind to pay extra for RS - just ... colour schemes are bad. new R in black looks great
Yeah lime green decals on a Triumph is rather odd.
Smart downshift from Triumph to reduce electronics, hope it'll become a good tendency, aiming to return to motorcycle instead of selling implemented devices.
Yeah same could be said of Yamaha's Tenere 700. Let's hope it's a trend - it's nice to have options of both tricked out and simple bikes IMO
@@motobob great reviews, man, greetings from Ukraine!!!
It's still got the up/down quickshifter too. Looks like a badass machine
@@dirkdiggler7727 the only thing to approve, yeah
I have a 2018 765 R and I am happy I got it when I did because I have no need for an RS so I would just save the grand and use the extra cash for some nice gear.
Nice video !
I own the 2018 RS and though I have the screen and throttle maps and various gismos, can't bother playing with all that when comes time to ride.
I just wanted to highlight how good Triumph is in finishing and details on their bikes. But they not only look good...
I really love the analog dash! So much easier to read than the TFT dash of the Street Triple RS.
And thanks for the quickshifter. Makes me appreciate my new bike even more!
I live in a country where if you stop at a traffic light with a phone mounted to your handle bars, you're asking to get robbed or shot for it. So smart phone integration with turn by turn navigation straight into the bike itself?! Amazing!! Much safer, no need to stop in a dodgy area to check where you are, cannot wait for it!
Last 765 my favorite was the R because it was the best bang for your buck, but now I think I would get a RS unless KTM hurries up with the 890 R.
I pick up my 2020 R on Tuesday, I'm trading in my 2018 R and TBH I won't miss the "fisher price" TFT, I prefer the digital/analog combo and in fact would prefer a dual analog clock combination as on the Speed Twin. IMO if you do a lot of track days the RS is for you but the superior mid range and slightly softer suspension make the R a better all round road bike.
i have the tft screen on a 2017 but would like less electronics for a shift assist syst.
Did they give any information about the traction control features?
i own a 2017 speed triple S with no TFT - i dont long for a TFT either. But they do look great.
Buy whatever bike makes your brain break dance.
Triumph is replacing the street triple S with R is many Asian markets as the S seems slightly under equipped for the current crop of competition
That’s why the move with basic instrument than fancy TFT
But that being said I think they should’ve kept the previous gen TFT or maybe just a basic less configurable TFT layout than bringing the old clocks from 2012
It’s kind of weird that a 9k brand new 2020 middleweight still uses a dash that was available 8-10 years ago
Does seem a bit unusual but I'm sure they've done their research. Perhaps they found that the people who want the TFT are willing to pay top dollar, and those who aren't bothered about it prefer a cheaper bike. Time will tell! The top spec RS models always seem to sell better anyway
I hate the looks of the TFTs.... don't care if it's 1970 or 2050, but I like analogue dails... hence for this reason the Street Triple is back on my radar as a next bike to buy.
See the video was taken Cape Town. My old home town. That road is actually closed to public, it was never finished due to a shop keeper who wouldn't sell up so they could connect the bridge from Seapoint to the Start of the N1 (where the car park is between the traffic light at water front entrance), Great place to bike btw.
Thanks for the video, very informative (I'm on my 3rd Street; 09R, 15R,18R). Problem is R doesn't sell as easily 2nd hand as the RS. I tried to sell it as Triumph dropepd the price to get rid of old stock so I was out priced by a new bike. I just kept it in the end.
Thanks again for sharing a great video. If I was still riding I would be satisfied with the more basic bike as I may put on the mileage but it would be generally on familiar roads. I wonder what the comparative secondhand price differences would be in a few years time. Regards, Bob M. South Wales
Camp: all the gadgets tech and creature comforts. This question comes down to how much one actually rides i think.
not interested in gadget like BT or music on a motorbike, but I'm quite interested in there are not custom map of the riding mode. Can I switch off TC control on the R version?
is it possible to buy an S model and remove the limiter right away? As in Cnada is cheaper insurance for the bikes under 750cc.
Time to grab an used RS with a TFT for even cheaper!
I got a new RS a few weeks ago and so the obvious question is if I was making the choice today would I look to save £1400 or not. I think I’d be happy with most of the downgrades on the R but the one that I want to keep is the TFT screen. When the Bluetooth module is available I’ll be getting it ASAP, purely for the turn-by-turn nav for when I head out down unknown country roads this summer! Sure you can go third-party but it’s never going to be as neat as built-in. My other thought is that while £1400 isn’t loose change, what does it translate to if you take the bike on a PCP? My guess is not much per month. The R looks a cracking bike, love the black and red colour scheme and a simple sweeping rev counter (an option that I’ve not found so far on my TFT) but I have no regrets with my RS
I agree on the rev counter... found it a bit annoying on the Tiger 900 too. I switched the display to the numerical rev counter which was as good as I could get, but not much use when you're using the nav. Maybe they'll make something like that available through a software update at a later date.
I think it's a ballsy/canny move not to have a TFT dash for the R when the R 765 had one originally. They''re pitching it at the guy who wants value [same quick shifter, 95% brakes, 95% rear shock] versus a screen, but also the guy who isn't looking at a fancy screen when they're riding [top tip]. I like the pitch. I'm in the market now, I just want to see the price in the Australia versus the RS, and I'll make the decision.
Same boat
Nice one Bob, on the ball as usual 👍. I reckon I'd try to find the extra bucks for the RS. I've a 2010 ST and surprised to see what looks like the same dash on this, I'd have thought the suspension and brakes would have been a big enough step to merit the R - RS.
Yep it’s a surprise move but at least they’ve made it cheaper!
@@motobob that's true, and tbh I've no problems with the dash. I do like the idea of being able to connect the phone for navigation mind you.
I recently got the 2020 RS, simply amazing bike.
But I hate not being able to see the revs easily on their new TFT display. It’s a terrible limitation.
I would love a simple round tach like they had on the previous generation, or even the analogue one from this new R.
Bought the R today. Because I turn the phone off and tuck it away whilst riding...obviously a personal choice and it's there to use when I'm off the bike.
I m for the R. Thanks MOTOBOB for the video info
I'd go with the R, ride for fun and don't really need a TFT screen also I think this black looks way better than the silver or matt black on the RS
I like to have the best example of anything i buy, but as ever, finances dictate what i end up with. The S.T. is such a brilliant bike, it wouldn't matter to me which model i owned. A huge amount of info in 6.35, well done!
True! Thanks Steven
Look at the Triumph Thruxton and the Triumph Speed Twin. Two very beautiful analog clocks that tell you everything you need to know. This is how it should be done. TFT displays are a solution looking for a problem.
I’m a big fan of those clocks too
When can we expect to see them at the dealers?
Cool to see all that footage from my home town. Rad video man.
Looks like a great place to ride! Especially the tiger 900 promos which I believe they also shot nearby?
@@motobob Best motorcycle city in the world in my opinion, although I'm pretty biased living here and all. Will have to look at those tiger promos a bit more closely haha
If the technology is increasing safety, it is most welcomed. If it is convenient, then it is a matter of choice and it might depend on the kind of riding you are doing. Great video. Cheers.
Cheers!
Awesome Bike I Hope I can Ride This in the Future
The spec is everything you need and nothing you dont.
For me;
Speedo
Tack
Fuel GaugeMy Mean Streak 1600 has no fuel gauge, just a warning
light that comes on 200 mi early.
If I had a track bike , I'd want to add;
Quick Shift
Slipper Clutch
Steering Damper
Great video as always. Very curious approach by Triumph. Pop Quiz! Can anyone think of an example where a manufacturer has purposely regressed a piece of technology on a new model?
Good question! I’ll watch this thread...
The higher spec breaks and suspension are worth the extra dosh on the rs all day long
True - it's cost more than £1,400 to fit them yourself, that's for sure
I got the RS model for the top brakes and suspension. It would be interesting for triumph to provide more customizable bikes. For example, an R model with top brakes and suspension.
i prefer the old analog look, but... its the same as the ones from the 675 '13 - '16 which i find a bit lazy for a new model. Then again i would love to have navigation build in aswell, but for now i have a nice garmin with a good mount installed and it works well enough to find my way. Personally i'm looking for a second hand speed with the analog tach... just because i never buy new to save some cash.
Nice video! I think its strange they got rid of the TFT screen But kept the quickshifter.. should be the other way around imo. The screen could not be that expensive compared to a quickshifter? The Z650 has a TFT and still a great price.. But it’s good that more brands make simpeler bikes. Basic but good. Technology is great but in the end it’s still the feeling and how a bike handles what matters.. Cheers!
I was in until you said they eliminated the TFT screen...
Save yourself a few extra grand and get a 2018 R.
I wish they would go back to the classic round headlights
I love all the tech of the RS, but the price and spec of the 2021R model sold me. Added to that I got a £500 clothing and accessories voucher for free. Added some nice extra bits with that.
the r met black colour scheme looks much better than the rs silver and the troublesome matt black paint on the rs ,analogue clocks will do fine
Did a testride with the RS , that’s all premium stuff for your money. And I don’t like those analog dials of the R.
That’s only cool on an old bike (or car) in my opinion.
I’ll take the RS any day !
Definitely prefer the R version also has more power sooner than the RS I have a 2014 R version and love it
Need to take into consideration that the R comes in the low seat height. The RS is actually taller than the S and R, makes a difference for us shorties 😋
TBH. I want both! I want a more pure driven ride, but I do like tech. That why I run with multiple bikes.
Great review - Thanks for sharing :-)
Yes this is a naked bike not a Goldwing, I have a 2016 street triple RX analog gauges and like the looks of analog for a crotch rocket. My tiger 1200 xca has a TFT and that's where it's meant to be.
I'd take the RS every day of the week. The styling is better. The new tech is really useful - especially the Nav.
All I need is a fuel Low indicator light. The rest of the none sense is junk when I’m riding. When I’m riding I’m in a battle, Super man never looks down at his smart watch during a fight.
Always wait for a top spec second hand
Everything that matters seems better or at least the same .You dont save that much tho really so guessing they wouldve had to raise the price a fair bit to have the improvements and the tech
Prefer thge r model. Triumph going the right way imho. Thx for review
Cheers Frank
The my ride apps and screen does not matter to me.
But just for the better brakes and suspension I'd pick the RS.
Let's see this summer 765 RS v.s. KTM Duke 890R
Is it a good first bike?
It's definitely aiming at MT09 / XSR900 etc.. potential buyers as it's in that ball park, and I have to say it would be extremely hard to resist! After many-a-bike... I bought an XSR900, then a Bonnie T120 and a Royal Enfield Classic 500 (3 cyc - 2 cyc - now 1) 😮 I still own all three! "Less is more.... Enjoyment"! But I won't knock it, as some of the gadgets are safety features as well as fun! Who doesn't love a QS!!?
Steve Febvre difference is the fit and finish and attention to detail on the triumph are leagues better, and the bike is far more refined. The MT09 is fast but that’s it’s, I’ll spend a little more on higher quality any day of the week. My biggest gripe with the MT and XSR were how cheap they felt, suspension was way to soft for my 6’ 220 lb body... if I was to buy a Japanese bike I would stray towards a Honda CB due to there refinement and fit and finish being quite good, better then anything else in the Japanese lineup.
@@sleeper.simulant7327 9 times outta 10 on any new bike the suspension needs upgrading anyway unless your going well north of £10K. And Triumph are no better than the worst for it (especially on their 'heritage' or classic bikes). So It's no surprise to anyone. But I will have to disagree with your remarks that Triumph's fit and finish is leagues better over Yamaha's. Their bikes have come on a long way. I recently sold a Z1000SX which did show signs of rust quite quickly but my Yammy is still in great condition and feels solid & tight. My Bonnie T120 (2018 model) does not feel as 'well built' as the Yamaha by a long shot, even putting models, usage, etc... aside. We can agree to disagree.
Steve Febvre yeah, I definitely won’t agree with Yamahas fit and finish being on par with triumph, at all. Yamaha can’t put a tail light on a bike that doesn’t vibrate and send the people behind them into a epileptic episode, plastics don’t always line up perfectly it seems, and the components feel extremely cheap in comparison.... the MT09 felt cheap to me, fast though, ridiculously quick off the line, Yamaha certainly can build an engine... Going straight from a Thruxton R to a MT felt like a major step down in terms of overall quality, fit and finish, etc. Then against a Thruxton R is classes above lol.
All the TFT just another distraction. Bluetooth with voice recognition much less obtrusive and lets you enjoy the ride with/without music
I'm old school prefer no electronics. Great video MotoBob👍🇦🇺🍺
Cheers flip!
I’d swap my 2019RS for the 2020 R, I want power lower down
buy a ducati :)
@@avrc9285
Which one.
Compared to the Street Triple 765.
A heavier Monster that doesn't have power or torque.
The way more expensive Hypermotard SP which is completely different type of bike.
Or silly money big Ducati ?
KTM Duke 890R or SuperDuke 1290 R would be better choise either way.
@@villea1841 ignorance is bless..enjoy
@@avrc9285 That's not an answer.
Because you have none ?
Ducati against the Street Triple:
Monster 797
Less power and torque and more weight.
Cheaper
Monster 821
Less power
Bit more torque
Heavier
More expensive.
Hyper Motard 950
Avesome fun bike
Totally different category than the "nakeds"
Power is similar but more torque.
More expensive as well.
KTM Duke 890R is cheaper, lighter, more power & more torque than Hypermotard.
Also better brakes and electronics.
If you're talking about bigger Ducati, literbikes and above the new KTM Duke 1290R has 140 NM of torque so the Ducati have nothing on it when talking about low or midrange pull.
Even the X Diavel 1260 S is down on power and torque against it.
Let me put it this way. Numbers on a paper only tell u half the story.
Marvelous motorbike
The R is simply a fantastic machine and I think its better than the competitors for the absence of the game console dash.
Thanks to Fowlers Bristol for the comparisons test rides and great deal.
What's that intro BGM it's sounded so good
I wouldn't say that I prefer LESS tech per say, but I've lived without some things so I don't really want to pay MORE for that kind of thing. Great review as usual!
Cheers Mark
I would be happy if my bike had a fuel gauge.
@@bikersoncall oh goodness it's a gamechanger! In ny youth it was an inconvenience not having a fuel gauge. But in my old age that's a deal breaker. Unless its a Honda Hornet. Then all bets are off!
i wan the rs with the analog instruments of the r ... probaly the smarter choice will be a 890 R
I ride to unplug. Well done Triumph!
Less techs.....i'm not watching a screen , i'm watching the road and whats on it.
I rather like the little 'T' embellishment on the 'eggs-aust'.. I wonder if the next models will adopt the new firing order a la the new Tigers.
The word from the triumph guys on the tiger launch was that they did it because customers felt that the tiger was a bit lacking off road because of the low end feel, or lack thereof. So I wouldn’t expect it to come to the road bikes. However, I would LOVE to hear what the rocket would sound like with that firing order
I highly doubt they will with the streets, that engine is perfect as it is. That’s what sets it apart from yams MT’s, actually has a top end.
Does the R have different riders modes and wheelie control?
yes
Great video fantastic bike 🇬🇧👍
Cheers RP
Analog gauges make me sad. Even a simple LCD screen is preferable to me than a needle. I'd happily plop down the extra cash just for the better screen and connectivity, nevermind the other electronics. Got my eyes on the Aprilia RS 660 for part of that reason. Going to be great competition for this bike and the Daytona.
Cr racefit exhaust sound
pure beauty
Why is only the right headlight lit in every video on this bike?
That was a good review
Both great bikes. RS for me. 👍
R for me, would never use the electronics/connectivity of the RS.
Would go for the RS. Would hate to have any regrets. 👍🏼
Ditto BA
Thing is I've read that the RS isn't as friendly on the street as the R due to its track bias in terms of tune. As someone daft enough to buy a fireblade for commuting (guilty) I'm no longer sure that all of the bells and whistles make for a better ride most of the time..
Good video not shower witch I would go for.
when will the 1160 be announced?
No word yet but I’ll cover it when I hear of it
I need LESS tech, in Thailand, where I'll be riding, you really need to concentrate on all that is around you..and coming at you, tech is ...if I need to pull over and check my location. Not while on the bike. Love the price and it looks...speedy !
Like most things in life it would come down to money. If I was struggling to afford 9k then the R is still a great bike, but if I could comfortably afford 10k then the RS is a no-brainer because you get better kit for a 'bargain' price.
That's a fair summary. You well mate?
@@motobob been ill but nothing serious. The bandit has gone! Now bought an old 500 twin as a project. Hopefully as a riding rebuild through the year.
@@robbikebob sounds like fun! what bike is it? look forward to some progress pics 👍
@@motobob that's the plan. I don't know whether to do progress pictures, which may have huge intervals between them, or wait until I'm well underway so I can put pictures up more often. It's only an old kawasaki ER5, but I'm hoping to make a scrambler type thing out of it...
Yes, no need for a R2D2 bike. No riding modes, no phone...you know what I mean. :-) I think Triumph will find some new customers with this one.
That's my next bike
The R models have nice colour schemes than the RS.. Why wouldn't Triumph give us proper gloss black on RS...
I like the silver grey and red RS... but not so much the black and yellow
I think Triumph are going the right way, it's trying to please two groups, let's see how this works out. An interesting move that might influence Triumph's thinking about the launch of the 1160?
I don't think you mentioned keyless on the R - is this a thing on the Street? On a Speed its something I don't think anyone asked for and is problematic as far as I can see from the forums. It was difficult on my Speed test ride too.
I don't have keyless but from what I hear you still need it when you fuel up. Pointless.
I'm hoping the R still requires a key and it's the one I'd go for.
Yeah I think keyless is a bit pointless to cos in London you need the steering lock (and more) wherever you go, so you always need to get them out anyway. On the scrambler 1200 the steering lock is even located on the top yoke I think. The only bike I’ve tested that makes it work well is the Goldwing - the steering lock is electronic and the luggage automatically locks and unlocks as you approach or leave the bike. It all works really well.
But as far as I know, no there’s no keyless on the street triple.
@@motobob Well let's hope not but I fear it's coming.
I'm very pro on technology like quickshifters, mandatory heated grips/seats, intelligent suspension or rider modes but meh over tft, phone, music and turn-by-turn, and very anti, gimmicks like keyless. But then I have a small brain that needs all it's focus to ride a bike.
It would be nice if manufacturers asked about our preferences instead of going all arms-race about it and jacking up the price. So it's a good move by triumph in offering cheaper back to basics alternatives (21st C basics that is).
MOTOBOB on the speeds/tiger 1200’s/rockets the steering lock is keyless.
Who rides a bike to listen to music and take calls? its all about freedom and getting away from the everyday norm for a while. The only sounds I want to hear on my bike are the engine and exhaust note.
