Welcome back to RBR and to the first drive of the new #GLC! The newest version of the best selling #Mercedes car today!
The GLC has really evolved into a beautiful car since it’s loose origins in the boxy GLK. Last gen was so popular it dethroned the C Class as the most sold, most desirable Mercedes, and the AMG version held accolades of the fastest around the Ring for a huge amount of of it’s life cycle.
Our new gen is upping the ante in every area, while adapting for the world’s shift towards EVs. And what better version to test than the plug-in hybrid with 100km Electric range - and the most powerful one in the standard line up: the GLC 400E hybrid!
Today I take a thorough look at what makes the new gen of hybrids tick, and how the practicality is: then check out all the different driving modes and why you’d buy a plug in GLC.
Like any best selling product: the GLC is very important to #MercedesBenz and it’s customers. So they’re throwing the kitchen sink at this generation. And what I mean by that is, they’re not rewriting the book in a massive way, because the last generation’s formula was frankly brilliant.
So once again, they’re using their best platform and best tech - all shared with C Class and S Class, the new MRA2 platform, shared with the C and S and it’s one that’s been optimised for electrification. So with the GLC, every model is either hybrid assisted or full plug in like this car. They are also all 4wd as standard, and the 9 speed gearbox.
The hybrid element at minimum features a 48v car system, using an ISG or integrated starter generator, between engine and gearbox, providing immediate 200nm torque and a bit of horsepower before the combustion engine takes over.
The full hybrid is more interesting, crossing the world of both combustion and EV. It has a 31kw battery packaged better in the rear boot than the predecessor, and a permanently excited internal rotor synchronous motor - which gives 440 Nm torque and 100kw and 135BHP. And a decent 86MPH as max on EV mode.
The GLC gives you a choice of both diesel and petrol hybrids, and our car today is the GLC 400E plug in with - 381 hp, 650 Nm, 61miles range. 0-60 5.6secs.
But Vs a non hybrid, weighs 400KG more! 2355 kg makes this one Porky car. So it has new suspension, a new four-link front set up, with a multi-link rear. It has improved ride quality and and you can also get the Airmatic suspension with active dampening, this comes along with rear axle steering for the first time, of up to 4.5 degrees - more than C class.
Design Wise - It’s 6cm longer, with 3 of that going to the boot space, and the rest is the same as the predecessor which I’ll compare it directly to. We'll also compare the normal GLC to the plug in in terms of boot space lost by the battery section.
I’ll also preview for your the 2023 GLC 43 , the upcoming GLC 63S 4 cylinder (with exhaust sound) and the coupe version. Huge thanks to Wilcobloc and for the spy video of the GLC!- / wilcoblok
So let’s find out what the new GLC is like today, and see if the heavy plug in hybrid is for us!

That’s exactly what I want from a car! A good electric range but the ease of use with petrol.
And who cares about 0-60? It’s an suv and 5.6 is fast enough for daily. Amg variants are we’re speed are important. That’s why I don’t see the point in Tesla. Their fast, really fast. But in any other category, Mercedes is better.

Nice review indeed, but he missed to mention that you need to connect/charge your phone with a cable. What's disappointing for the price.
He also didn't mention how well all the security systems work. In some cars, all the ongoing warning sounds are annoying.
Last but not least, doesn't have it a heads up display? 😊

  • @zeedustrakok
    @zeedustrakok Před rokem +4

Based upon your review I’d say the GLE300e will be the pick of the range. With over 300hp it is fast enough and it is mainly a comfortable car. Big downside: with the current prices it might just be out of budget. We’ll have to await prices.
I would go for the smaller wheels due to the added comfort. No offroad driving, but construction sites might prove the features useful.

Great review. This is a perfect example of why some of Merc's decisions get me so frustrated- why can't this technology that's applied to the GLC, be applied to the GLS? Merc created the EQC, and now the GLC 400E. Why couldn't they try to electrify the current GLS, whether it be full electric or PHEV? The EQS SUV isn't really a substitute for the GLS because the 3rd row is cramped and there's very little boot space behind the 3rd row when in position. This strategy makes even less sense, when Range Rover has plans for a PHEV & full electric versions. And it's not like Merc will just drop the S-class interior into the GLS, which I also find frustrating
