  • The prestige family SUV market is one that's been booming for several years, and the Mercedes GLC has been one its more popular offerings, meaning that it's been a big success story for Mercedes.
The next chapter of that story has just been written, too, with the arrival of the new third-generation GLC. The visual tweaks are subtle at first glance, but much more marked on closer inspection. The car is a full 60mm longer for more interior space and boot capacity, and the new platform can also house some pretty compelling new powertrain technology.
Take the GLC 300e plug-in hybrid tested in this CarGurus UK video. It packs a combined power output of a whopping 308bhp, yet with a large 31.2kWh lithium-ion battery pack, it has an official WLTP electric-only driving range of up to 75 miles. And those numbers make for pretty compelling reading. Vicky Parrott takes the new car for a spin to see if the GLC is as compelling in the real world.

Impressive electric range for a hybrid. Those prices though, £62k plus?!! Can't stand those touch sensitive controls on the steering wheel either!

I'm pretty impressed with that cold weather performance. I do like the GLC actually. Does it come with a 7 seat option?

I also reviewed the Mercedes GLC and I feel like it's more interesting than before! Better than what they did with the EQ classes!

Compelling about this is the rear weel rotation and some comforts. Otherwise not sure.

Throttling back the charging for UK spec cars does seem odd but then this car could be called odd. With a decent electric range it has to carry the weight of that engine and gearbox all the time but the same can be said about driving once the battery is discharged it has to carry that dead weight of the batteries. A really nice car though, Boot space is a tad over compromised and like many have mentioned there is too much touch control of basic functions but at least this one does it better than many. As usual a great review Vicky. I don't think I'll be making a purchase of one of these anytime soon.

Throttling back the charging is surely better for the batteries long term health?

60-70 miles electric range would cover 90% of daily driving but on a long motorway run, using petrol only, what mpg would this get realistically? It's a heavy car so I'd imagine the mpg on that type of trip would be pretty low.

I think they have quietly deleted from the UK range but it is still available in Ireland 🇮🇪 which is very strange as it’s neighbouring right hand drive market! 🤷🏻‍♂️

For PHEVs the new BMW X1 25e and 30e seem like much better options. Bigger boot space (490l), 50 mile electric range and about 20k cheaper.

Sadly ... Merc has the ability and knowledge ... to be a much better car / SUV , than its competitors but it rather be seen shortchanging its buyers with certain omissions

I dunno, diesels really are the pits in terms of the sound they omit. You have this lovely looking car, but at the turn of a key it sounds like a tractor. I get that might be such a problem with a hybrid variant, but I would still prefer the petrol-hybrid variant when purchasing a 'premium' vehicle.

Indeed, that's why after a miserly 3 year warranty, whose goner chance it.Mercedes should offer warranties like Korean manufacturers (they will eventually after Kia/Hyundai steal all their sales?).

Vicky is still so out of touch with the real world, the car starts at mid 50’s yet she thinks “most people will step up” to the mid spec car. Obv no cost of living crisis going on in her house.

Why does the presenter have to be so dismissive, gloomy, pessimistic and bored by her job. If you hate doing it then give up. I’m not buying one because I like other cars but it is a wonderful car in so many ways that would have seemed impossible ten years ago so for goodness sake cheer up a bit…and try to seem a little more interested and subjective.
