I don’t understand how this works? How are the ball bolts different? How does reversing the bracket on the other end make it open by itself? Good installation tutorial but can you tell us why it works?
They are different spring loaded shocks which provide the automatic lift when the latch is released.
Hate tonaskmthis way but anything like this for the 2012 beetle?

Does the trunk open every time you unlock the car, or only with the "trunk"-button?
+Boris Poorn The trunk only unlatches if you use the trunk button. The unlock button will just let you activate the latch manually.

Will this work on mk4?
All any car needs to do this is a trunk unlock button on the key fob. All the kit seems to be is just a set of much stronger support arms. OEM ones are designed to be strong enough to hold open the trunk, but not lift it themselves. So be warned I've done this in the past with a Celica and it opened like a catapult, but mannnnn was it difficult to close. Don't do this if your short or weak, because it was physically impossible for my gf to close it. Also be warned that if you park outside they'll lose strength over time anyway. Especially in the cold.

every time I let it open on it's own something snaps ;(
This should come like this from the factory. Could anyone tell me if it is difficult to close? Only reason I want this is because I have nerve/tendon damage that limits my abilities :(
If it ends up being difficult, I'm sure you could mount in a nice pull down leather or vinyl handle to make it easier to close. ^.^
