    Tax write-off is about the only reason to pay near $100k for a truck.

      I don't think most people understand how a tax write-off works. You pay a little less in taxes because you paid MORE on something. The write-off only saves you a fraction of what you pay. So paying for something frivolous that you don't need is still wasting more money than you are saving and doesn't make sense.

    One thing to note is the GMC is going to come standard with things like the technology package that you would have to equip on the Chevy so that is what is up with the initial massive price difference. If you spec them similarly a Silverado and GMC can be about 2-4k difference in price sometimes even less.
    The previous Colorado and Canyon for example had a price difference of 400 dollars if they were similarly specced.
    Still find the GMC to be a little over priced over the Chevy. I think that increased cost comes from interior "upgrades" and that is it. I kind of prefer the ZR2 interior over the GMC AT4X interior simply because that white in the premium offering of at least the Canyon AT4X isn't going to age well. The Black/tan interior in lesser Canyon models though is definitely a superior look to the Chevy models though. I also think the ZR2 nameplate has more brand recognition than the AT4X.

      The tech package on the 2500 is not standard for the 24's. I just built one (AT4 diesel) and it's about 1300 more. The AT4 is about 2-3k more than the ZR2. Add 9k for the AEV versions of both BUT the AT4X is around 100k where the Bison AEV is 93k.

    I think it has to do with its position in the line up. The ZR2 HD is positioned below the high country which is below the AT4 in the GMC line up. The AT4x is positioned between the Denali and the Denali Ultimate, making it higher end from go. I always buy GMC so I am bias, but when I ordered up my 2024 AT4 it was a better bargain than the Chevy High Country. At the end of the day GMC, as you said is positioning itself as higher end. I personally like the way GMC package their trucks making them much easier to order imo.

    The interior of the GMC is still just nicer. You get a 12 speaker Bose stereo vs a 7 speaker Bose. The GMC comes w/ the Tailgate stereo. You get the 16-way massage seats that Roman doesn't like. HUD! Also, to match major included equipment, you have to add the tech package and power steps to the Silverado. That reduced the price difference to about $8k. Still a lot, but less.
    The fact that Chevrolet still wants to charge extra for adaptive cruise on a truck starting over $70k is amazing (just like charging for cruise on the Colorado TB!)
    On the cheap end, the price difference is a $1000. You get LED headlights and chrome bumpers for that.

    I mean, these are incredible works of engineering. They’re luxurious work machines that can tow and carry heavy things, transport yourself, your friends, your family, your colleagues etc hundreds of thousands of miles in comfort and relative safety. You could probably survive on most of the things you spend money on. You could live in a tiny house or a cheap apartment and eat sale food. You could not have internet or phone service or even electricity if you really tried. But you and me and all of us are humans. We work and we spend the fruits of our labor on what we want and need. More so on the former. So who cares. A more luxurious feeling or better looking truck is a choice even if it’s largely the same as another but for more money. It’s yours, his, her, my money. We do what we want and/or need to do with it.

For me I will stick with another F250/350 lariat and get a Carli level suspension, 37's on a 9" wheel and yes, I'll take another 7.3. It will ride better than a Tremor, ZR2 and my favorite way over priced GMC HD. It just won't look as good as the GM's but I can get all that done for low 80's. I have decided go with the LT trim with leather and a center console for about 1500.00 less than the GMC. Those options are not even offered on the GMC in the double cab long bed. Just more chrome. Its about a Tax write off for business owners like an s corporation. You can take 100% depreciation in the year purchased. So 100 grand in gross earnings is lowered by costs of the truck. Say 75k
    When you consider small business owners are paying north of 10 grand a quarter in estimated taxes on estimated earnings ( not including payroll taxes)...well uncle Sam is getting paid for doing nothing while you hustle ...taxes are excessive. A nice new Truck is excessive yes..but it could save you as much 20 grand in taxes...
    Pay sam 20 or 25 grand extra this year or get a new Truck?
    Taxes are our biggest expense. Vehicles cost money, an endless pit.
    Its a double edge sword...

  • @buckhorncortez
    @buckhorncortez Před 8 měsíci

    Tax write-off is a simplistic rationalization. The problem with that line of thinking is ultimately it becomes an asset and you end up paying taxes on the vehicle as an asset. You'd have to turn the truck over every 3-5 years (depending upon state tax laws) for the truck to work as a tax write-off.

  • @Gubers

    I mean this is not the full story. I am looking at a GMC Sierra 1500 Elevation with 3.0L Duramax pretty much fully loaded. 13,400lb tow capacity and excellent mileage. $58,000 with the promotion right. That’s the best deal I’ve seen on a truck that nice with that kind of capability in like a decade. A Silverado of similar spec would cost $thousands more.
    Just don’t buy a brand-new truck from the factory without a good promotion or big incentives and you can get most of these GMC’s for reasonably similar prices. And they are worth a bit more IMO anyways because they are a little bit more premium and look better too.

    The tax write off is ridiculous. It cost more $$ proportionately to get the bigger tax write off,,,. It’s ridiculous. The only time there’s a true benefit is with non-cash expenses. If you improve a building the business owns, you can depreciate that, but those costs increase the value of the building. That value generally only ever increases. If you are getting a depreciating asset, you are better off leasing! You lease depreciating assets and buy appreciating assets. Generally it’s better NOT to tie up your liquidity into depreciating assets,,, you simply reduce your buying power in the future of appreciating assets, you increase your cost of borrowing with a higher interest rate due to your business being in a less liquid position.especially with today’s trucks and their prices!! Just because you have the cash doesn’t mean spend it!! 😂😂. Pay your taxes and retain the earnings. There is a reason you have “retained earnings” on the ledger.
    Look at the extreme with companies like Apple,,,,. They have billions in retained earnings!! BILLIONS, but they still borrow to buy certain things. When it comes time to borrow lenders practically throw $$$ at them. Why? Low to no risks in the loan. The interest rates are the best on those loans.
    I dint understand this until my debts were almost gone with my ranch purchase & I started to retain $$ vs paying out almost everything to loan payments. The business had improved immensely as well. I reached about 8800 acres of land, 25,000 head of cattle for the feedlot and around 1500 head of range cattle on average. That’s not giant, but you consider my annual costs. I was borrowing $$ for the feeder cattle every year, and at a healthy interest rate, then I reached the point I could pay cash for those cattle,,,, think the costs on 25,000 head of cattle,,, at that time fall calves were $500 - $650 per head ($12.5 million to $16.25 million). If I paid cash for the cattle I was cash poor, asset rich. I could borrow $$, but the books didn’t look as good. It was a better scenario where I just offset the cost of borrowing with the interest received on my deposits! There was always a net loss generally (except when a fortunate decision on stocks pays out) and that loss could be offset on my taxes! That was a true beneficial write off because those cattle were worth as much as double my input costs per animal including purchase price, when it came time to sell them!! In about a year I paid my loan off, banked. Another $10 million + and was that much better off the next year and so on!!! When I sold my ranch, I had no equipment debt (it was mostly leased), but my assets were a low to mid 8 digits PLUS all of my retained earnings!! I had to invest heavily to reduce my tax burden & defer taxes and so on, but I was very cash positive!!
    That’s what I play with now! Because I didn’t spend every dime we had,,, I dug our business out of the point you were robbing Peter to pay Paul (so to speak). There were 2 shares in that farm/ranch/feedlot issued. One for my wife & one for me!
    Those write offs you can take on the specific asset purchases at the end of the year are incentives the govt applies to boost extremely important industries, like automotive, more than to reduce your tax burden. It’s ok to make $$ and pay taxes!! You pay those taxes BECAUSE you made money, improved your financial position for the next year and so on. Buying the “ranch” you have purchased,,,, excellent capital investment. If you were making more $$$ off the videos than you claim,,,,, then the new trucks are a great purchase, vs a necessary purchase to go on making new videos. It’s a catch 22.

      @AkioWasRight Před 8 měsíci +4

      You don't need depreciation to write-off a "commercial" truck, there's also a standard mileage rate which allows for a 100% deduction of mileage. On top of that, there are combinations of the standard mileage rate and the actual expense deduction that cover all the expenses of a truck throughout each year.
      Besides, a depreciating asset is still an asset. I mean, even after 5 -10 years, many of these trucks will still be worth much of the original purchase price. If you finance and deduct every expense each year, you will literally pay $0 to drive the truck and still be able to retain the asset, even if it's a $100k truck. Look, go buy a used, low mileage "work" truck. Even after 10 years, they are often still selling for $30k-$40k, sometimes more, which is not much less than they were new. Even high mileage trucks are still selling for tens of thousands of dollars. To gain tax advantage from that means big money being banked.

      First of all large companies like Apple dont pay taxes. They offshore revenues, by booking revenues to tax shelter countries like Ireland. They then have to borrow money to pay USA expenses because if they onshore those revenues they pay taxes. For regular business owners like myself, marginal rates in the 50 percent range make every truck luxury 50 percent cheaper. Our biggest expense is Tax and it sucks and pretty much guarantees our family while comfortable will not be rich and the rich folks who wrote the tax code have it that way for a reason, motes around their fortunes

      @@AkioWasRight - 5 to 10 years from now the market will have stabilized. The trucks will have depreciated as they used to. There are poor bastards out there already that paid as much as $7,000 over market MSRP for a Ram 150l Classic and now the dealers are negotiating on a brand new truck AFTER the 20% discount that’s now there on some models, 10% even on the “new Ram” body style. People are well over $17,000 backwards on the price with ownership of less than a year!! Haha. Ford is discounting their trucks and negotiating, Chevy the same. The Toyota dealers are selling the new Tundra at MSRP or slightly less. What’s it gonna be like in 5 years (excepting the ridiculous potentials for POTUS in 2024,,,,).
      I understand there are some benefits on the purchase of commercial trucks in the USA, the mileage applies even if the truck is a couple of years old, so is a moot point. The actual purchase is a significant risk, especially this fall.
      I had a very large Ranch and when I switched to leasing all my tractors, harvesting equipment, haying equipment, feeding equipment through 2 different AG dealerships depending on which had the machine I needed, my net profits soared!! Granted we were talking about a few million dollars in equipment, but all of my lease costs, to the penny, were straight write offs against the company income. No different than depreciation on a purchased truck. If the retained value of the truck, (tandems and Semi Tractors, exceeded the lease buyout by a reasonable sum, I bought out the truck and sold for a profit!! Same can even be done for the light duty trucks and up. The large Ag machines were still better off going to the dealership at lease end (every 2-3 years) they can just sell the machinery easier with the financing options they can offer. They maintained the equipment as part of the lease, in the field. If a machine broke down, they brought out an equivalent replacement or better for you to use to minimize the downtime. Owned machinery isn’t always that good as far as service goes.
      It doesn’t fit every business, but it fit mine from pickups and larger. I still bought our trucks because it was inevitable they would sustain body damage in the first 3 years. They were off-road 90+% of the time in rugged conditions and worked hard. Your costs to return them,,,, it would be hilarious really.
