Thanks for the tips Frank. I was using the animal grade pellets and have noticed they were as you mentioned too soft and they get dusty as well. When i do a clean out i’ll after the breeding. I’ll be getting the hard wood pellets. Thanks a bunch !!!
These are much better quality and the wood pellets for animals are too soft.

I’m also trying to go antibiotic free and know it’s important to de-worm before breeding season. I have 3 in 1 and Coxiworm which are both antibiotics for de-worming; what do you recommend instead? How about showing your breeding hens for the next video because this one was awesome 👌
I have my hens in another loft and they look great. Maybe I can do another video once they are paired. I am happy you like my videos but that 3 in 1 stuff is an antibiotic with wormer.

71 is a special bird. He homed from a tough 500 mile race and stayed out for 20 minutes. He finished second. When he went in I realized he had a bad respiratory infection. He flew and scored at 508 miles and could not breath. That is why he was in a daze when he got home. I retired him and he recovered with rest.

Some great looking birds, Frank. I see you have all the nest boxes open. Don't you have problems with a male taking 2-3 nest boxes? Free mating sounds excellent, but how exactly do you do that? The females use to go to their old nest boxes (more than to their old mates) and unless you have a new section where the female has never been before, she might choose the male in the nest box she used in the past and that is not really free mating. A video about this would be nice. I would also like to see how you proceed with the yearling males when you let them get nest boxes when you move them from the young birds to the mature birds racing section. Often I have males that get more nest boxes and some don't get any.
Great question and I am sorry for this confusion. I use two breeding lofts and mate certain pairs in nest boxes to change mates. I can close the doors between sections until the pairs are mated to new mates. . I will make the loft three sections and put the pairs in each section until they are mated. I can also move a cock or hen to the other breeding loft to help my break up pairs. I have been able to swap them around fairly easy with my lofts and sections. In both end sections of that loft I will leave the 9 cocks that own the boxes in the section and add the hens. I do worry about them taking multiple nests because the loft has way more boxes than pigeons. The middle section boxes are small and most of the birds have two nests in that section. Hope I helped a bit. Yearlings may end up on the floor in a corner or in a nest.

The white bird I highlighted is a pretty good one. He is the last bird my father wanted before he passed away. My Dad never got to see the pigeon. He has sentimental value for me. There is one grizzle that is super nice and I may try him again this year. The hawks tend to take the odd colors early but once the odd colors make it to the young bird season there is not a problem.

Late hatches at the end of the season off the breeders or even the race team are the best place to start. They are the less expensive and there are plenty of stars to pick from.

Hi Frank, question for you regarding the pellets. 1. Do they break overtime? 2. Do you rake everyweek or get rid of it completely after some time? 3. Do you carry alot of residue in your shoes after returning from the loft?
They do break down into a saw dust over time. I remove clumps of droppings and kick the pellets around when I am in the loft caring for the pigeons to cover the floors. I change the pellets maybe every two months. They do get in your shoes but I never wear my pigeon shoes in the house.
Super good tour, Frank. I've been using rice hulls for floor litter. They work well, but do blow around, so I appreciate the explanation on the hardwood pellets from TSC. How many pairs do you breed from and how many rounds do you usually take per pair?
The wood pellets do break down and get dusty over time. I change every couple months and remove clumps. I will breed from maybe 50 pair. I also have a small breeding section of about eight pair of Van Reets.

I pair in January and breed right through the heat of the summer and the body molt into September. Maybe 7 rounds. The birds have all the minerals they need at all times. This is most important.
@FrankMcLaughlinPigeons That's what I expected you would say. It seems like most people take only 2 to 4 offspring from a pair and as a result do not test them very adequately. Needless to say, I expected that you probably did at least 5 rounds.

for de-worming I know you said you 2 to3x in the fall, but do you do back to back deworming or wait a weeks in then deworm again? and also when do you start your breeding? Hi Frank. How come you're planning to do a line breeding with the Sharika pigeons?
I am inbreeding them this way for sale only. I will not keep any of the inbreds. Everyone wants inbred pigeons and they bring the best prices. I am breeding from a couple children to my other Best Kittel hen but she was mated to 1st AU Convention winner who is Sablon Geerinckx. I will breed from crosses if they turn out to be good.

I can certainly talk about that. A pigeon that has performed at the top over and over is most likely going to be a great breeder. No guessing on that one. We know the genetics.

2] can you show the loft ceiling from inside and show the loft from outside?
3] what's the size of the loft?
That loft is 36 feet and I use the first section for storage and gives me a double door system for the pigeons not to be able to get out. It is only a chicken wire roof and a ridge vent. The wire is rubber coated lobster trap wire. I will try to make a video from the outside. I like the 1/2 inch by 1/2 inch better than this.
Hi, does it get below freezing where the loft is located ? is the aviary metal mesh ok for the birds legs in winter or you recommend other materials in extreme cold for the aviary floor ? I was also wondering how to deal with cleaning the interior in extreme cold is the wood pallets a good solution so the droppings don't freeze on the wood floor directly ?
We have extremely cold winters and the pigeons are on wood perches or nests. The droppings do freeze and the wood pellets help. I will clean on the occasional warm day.

may i ask? what do you find is the advantage of the pelleted wood? (you buy the stuff they sell to burn, right) as opposed to any other bedding?
I buy the stuff sold to burn. Out of all the bedding I have used over the years I like this the best. You could put it down much thicker but it is a pain to clean out. If you put one bag in when it breaks down you get three bags coming out. lol

Sir why do you put wood pellets on the floor? to keep the floor dry?
Pellets keep the floor bone dry and the pigeons are more comfortable on bedding than a bare floor. I do keep bare floors in the race team to keep dust down.

I have been vaccinating the old pigeons once a year for PMV/Salmonella/Brochal. I vaccinate the breeders before the breeding season and the old bird race team a couple weeks before the old bird season.
Great video, the birds look super healthy 😍 You refer to the natural health of the birds and no antibiotics 7 times in the video. Never in their lifetime. Does that include no Virkon S? With the convention birds (from birds all over the country) you mentioned in a past video individually treating with antibiotics and flock treating with Virkon S. Do you do the same with your own race birds? Do you use a Virkon S flock treatment with your own race team or the breeders? Just curious… I will take the white inbred cock at 4:45 if you really don’t like the color 😉 Again the birds look super!
I do use the Virkon S with my own pigeons a couple times per year. I last used the Virkon S 1/2 USA teaspoon to the gallon five days end of summer while I the birds were still breeding. I do this rarely with my own birds.

Hw many rounds do you allow them
I will pair in January and let them breed right into September. They breed right through the heat of the summer and breed through the body molt. Plenty of minerals and strong immune systems. Does not hurt them one bit. The top birds will raise maybe 7 rounds.

I have some mealy Staf Van Reet birds that are in their own section and they raise reds on the dark check hens. In the other breeding loft I have a red chocolate. Mostly neutral colors for the race team and one loft races.
I've noticed some of them holding their wings under the tail from min. 2:32. Is that telling anything
The one cock is getting old and he is a bit fat. That is why he dropped his wings. The Shakira bird was just caught that way for a minute. Wings were over tail a few second later.
Mr. Frank, how many weeks before you change your wood pellets?
I leave maybe six weeks or so. If they are dry and the bedding is fine you can leave a long time. I remove the clumps and move them around with my boot to cover bare floor spots.

Both are the same pigeons. Daniel and Dikke Prins were two brothers and are behind all the pigeons in the family. I had a son of Donker Witpen Daniel.

why do you put wood chips down?
I use the Wood Burning Stove Wood Pellets. Lofts stay nice and dry and pigeons are much healthier on a deep litter. I do not like or have time to clean regularly.

I usually will remove the clumps and kit them around with my foot. I maybe change the pellets every couple months.

The stuff makes the best compost ever and breaks down into a loam when the pigeon droppings are added. My soil must be rich with all the minerals I give the pigeons. lol

I know there use to be a club in Braintree at an old timers barn/garage where everyone would meet he was wonderful to me and my father but it’s been more then 15 years I’m sure he isn’t around anymore but he use to take his time to teach me when I was little and my father who barely spoke any English at the time.

Really, Frank?! You primarily free mate your birds?! I’m just beginning to get interested in starting a loft, no birds yet, but having been around dogs, horses, etc, my whole life, nobody in those crowds free mates anything. Total heresy! 😂
I’ve been watching your vids the last couple of weeks and getting a kick out of the way you do things: flying celibate hens with no cocks in sight; minimal roadwork; simple feeding; no inbreeding ; no medications, etc. About 180° from what everyone else preaches. I haven’t gotten them all watched yet but I will!
You're right, it is considered heresy in most animal breeding circles, but a lot of good racing fanciers do use a lot of free matings apart from a few special pairs and often get their best results from the free mated pairs. I tend to suspect that the natural inclination of the birds are to select the strongest, most vigorous mates they can find through natural selection and like a lot of wild birds it results in hardier offspring than our own intervention in selection is likely to create. It's not something I do, but I've known many old timers who stocked only the best that they bred and always allowed free matings. Those old timers swore the birds made better choices than they could.
You will find my methods make this game much easier. I used to spend so much time mating pigeons. I do not live at the lofts so I cannot lock pairs in nests easily and rotate pairs. Most of my champions came from free mating but I am breeding from all high quality birds. Over the years I let my best racers free mate and raise some babies. Turns out those pairs are also terrific. I feel a free mated bird is happier also and more enthusiastic to raise babies. I do make special pairings in individual pens. I find pigeons breed better in a group.

@@FrankMcLaughlinPigeons The late Paul Bradford who bred Rollers for 60+ years usually used free matings. He used to say that the worst breeding seasons he ever had were the ones where he picked the matings. I've only ever done it with teams of fosters, but I have noticed that they seem to have more success rearing young and breed more steadily than the pairs I picked.
