  • This is my absolute favorite from the movie. As cleaned and as filtered as it gets. There's something to it, melancholic, bittersweet, happy but sad. I added some scenes to retrospectively showcase the ambient of the Hellenic period. Hope you'll enjoy it as much as I do.

The story of this film is something of a tragedy on its own. I was 17 years old the year it was released, I had high hopes due to my admiration for Stone as a filmmaker, my fascination with antiquity and film making. I'm probably writing some things you already know Dreamer but I wanna throw this out there.
This was Stone's long term passion project, he had been an Alexander fanboy since boyhood. It's a shame he didn't get release the film in its Ultimate Cut format, similar to Kingdom of Heaven, the theatrical version is a let down compared to what it should've been and ultimately became. I didn't much love the theatrical version at the time, but I didn't hate it. The film had so much going for it, yet had a hard time coming together. The overwhelming negativity was still undeserved and since revisiting Alexander in it's proper version in recent years, it's become quite clear that this film deserved much more acclaim.
Films like Troy were getting good reception at the same time but compared to Alexander is a simplistic children's movie. I suspect audiences weren't generally interested in the take of Alexander which Stone had, a far more mature and ambiguous take on history. Other great films such as Master & Commander: On the Far Side of the World, although it received acclaim from critics it did not get much notice from general audiences. People seemed more interested in spectacles rather than character driven period films. Alexander has plenty of spectacle, but the focus is more on the story and character interplay.
Had this film been released today, or even as a series, it would get a very different reception and probably far more positive. I'm sure the pansexual aspect of Alexander had some part to play in its negative reception, but the theatrical version was too trimmed and streamlined to make the story and Alexanders character interesting enough. Either way, in hindsight it's pretty ridiculous how utterly panned this film was, to almost ludicrous levels and the soundtrack is vastly underrated. In a fair world this film should've been considered for many high level awards, especially for set design, costume design, music, cinematography and such.
The film still has its flaws, but time often turns flaws into endearing qualities, the occasional overacting, overdone dialogue and strange moments are no longer as off putting as they once seemed. Revisiting the film so many years later, I got a completely different experience with it. I also found a new reverence for its attempts at historical accuracy, although Stone does some condensing and minor changes, plus his own theories on Alexander's demise, it's incredibly accurate for a sword and sandals film.
Sad tale, this film is much better than it got credit for and I do sense a slight change in attitudes towards it which will likely increase over time. It used to have a 5,4 on imdb but now it's up to 5,6. Mild change but that's how it starts. Underrated classics of the early 1990's like Last Action Hero and The Last Boy Scouts were in the 5-6 range in the mid 2000's but have gained over 1 star since. Had I been asked in 2004 whether Alexander would be better 20 years later, I would have said no, but here we are.
This is a unique film of its kind and deserves a re-evaluation.
P.S. I think you've done great stuff on this channel.

By far the most underrated soundtrack of all time. It's absolutely mesmerising. Should have won the Oscar. RIP Vangelis. He was a genius.

The film is epic and one of my favorites in honor of a great leader and one of the greatest generals of all time..but don't forget the innocent victims and the unknown heroes who in real life and history are much more tragic...and who gave life and name to Alexander the great. Thank you

@@thesuperyou2829 I agree. Thou shall not kill. Looking from Christian or another religion perspective. But there was no such religions back then...war was an oridinary thing so imagine being born in that time. War and butchering is all you know. Average age of death was 25yrs. You'd die either of war, illness or starvation. Every dream has a price but not every dreamer is willing to pay it.

For me this film is the Lawrence of Arabia of modern film. People to stay away from it because of the bisexual content, bisexuality has even today not been properly tolerated, but this is an extraordinary epic which deserves to be recognized as such.
