Amesbury and Military Light Railway - Railway Shorts

  • First in another playlist "Railway Shorts". There will be a little of everything in here from Light Railways, Branch Lines, and informative videos that don't fit elsewhere!
Today we tried to find as much of the old Amesbury and Military Camp Light Railway. Ultimately built by LSWR despite early competition from GWR. Both companies wanted to build a line across the plan but for various reasons this line only made it as far as Bulford Camp.
We didn't explore the camp or much beyond Newton Tony owing to the following:
    1) Amesbury station is now a Tesco Car Park.
    2) The yard for the above is a small Industrial Estate.
    3) You are not allowed to film or photograph close to Boscombe.
    4) We didn't feel it appropriate to film close to Boscombe camp.
Anyway... questions as per the video:
    1) Does anyone have any more info on this line other than what can be found on wiki!?
    2) What are we looking out for when trying to find old remains of a Roman Road?
    Enjoy.

Perhaps of greater interest is that not long after turning north from Amesbury for Bulford, the military railway also branched west to serve a stub to Queens camp as well as a longer route over Packway to Larkhill camp.
Beyond Larkhill the line divided again to head West North West to Rollestone Camp and South South West following Worthy Lane to camps and aerodromes at Stone Henge, Fargo Woods and Lake (crossing the now A303 in the process).
Traces in the landscape can still be seen on Google maps though recent work in Larkhill Camp has removed what remained there...

Allegedly the rail used as kerb edging on Maddington St in Shrewton came from the military railway.

When I worked at Boscombe Down there was part of the old railway embankment within the perimeter which could be walked. The line crossed the road from BD down to Solstice park where the fairground operators live.

Very interesting! Reminds me of the old Halton Camp Railway in Buckinghamshire.

    Super video, enjoyed it.
I walked route this some years ago in the early spring, and were able to see the footings of the signal box and the foundations of the railway cottages as there was much less undergrowth.

Adrian D thanks. We did struggle to find anything of significance here. A late Autumn/winter trip might be on the cards!

I was thinking why I like the Whitewick’s videos so much. Is it the unique gravel tones of the presenter - could be . Is it because I like Rebecca’s quiet and shrewd interjections whilst being a pretty, and attractive company - most definitely. The content and excellent information delivered with such enthusiasm - well absolutely. In all there so many positive comments I can bring to mind, so thank you again both I really appreciate what you do 👍🏻

Hello Paul and Rebeca if you go into Amesbury Tesco there is a pictorial account on the wall in the foyer as Tesco and the car park is built where the station was..

Grateley station still open but Paul and Rebecca the MOD have probably wiped out much of the Branch after it closed.

Hey guys, I hope you're keeping safe and well? I work at Salisbury Station as a train driver. Between Grateley and Allington there use to be a junction called Amesbury Junction which took you to Amesbury and beyond.
Another place to explore if you haven't already done so is the old Seaton Line. The station still exists and some route are still visible. Keep up the good work with the video

I live in Bulford, if you carry on past Bulford camp on the range road, you will pass a few houses called sling cottages, there is still track and part of a station there. 🙂 Great video guys.

Some rails exist where the old Bulford camp platform was, and some platform edge can be found, Sling Camp location has a platform deep in the undergrowth. Between Bulford village station and the camp the line is a footpath along the edge of the village estate. Between Amesbury and Bulford nothing at all, but at Boscombe you missed the bridge over the line carrying the old Marlborough Road, outside the fence so can be photographed, the track bed alongside the Airfield can mostly be walked.

That gate by the barrows was latched like that so someone on horseback could open it without getting off. Why anyone would want to ride through there is a mystery to me.

When did you swap the brunette you have in this film for the redhead you have in the current films?
