Canada's 2nd Largest Airline: The WestJet Fleet In 2023

- As Canada’s second-largest airline, Calgary-based WestJet operates a fleet of over 111 aircraft. Having started operations in 1996 as a low-cost carrier, the airline is much, much younger than Air Canada - which itself began operations as Trans-Canada Airlines in 1937. Despite the age difference, WestJet has grown to become a serious rival for Air Canada - not just in the domestic market, but also when it comes to US, European, and Caribbean services. Today, we examine the all-Boeing fleet of WestJet, its journey thus far, and what will come next for the airline.

No mention of its regional service on Encore using Dash 8Q4 and their sub contractor Pacific Coastal Airlines using a fleet of 6 Saab 340B's
WestJet has an identity crisis. Originally they wanted to be the Southwest of Canada. Then they decided they want to become a full cost carrier to compete with AC head on, hence the 787 order and offering business class product. However, they've now done a complete 180 to focus more on their LCC roots, by reducing operations on the east coast, doubling down on YYC as their only hub, and cancelling the rest of the 787 order, but their prices are usually as expensive as AC. I just don't understand the direction they are going for.
787 is a low cost carrier’s workhorse. Just look at all these long haul LCCs popping up everywhere just utilizing 787s. If WestJet were to order 777, I would agree that they are going full-service. But with just 737 and 787, nahhhhh
I'm so used to seeing more modern 737 planes that I can't get over how small the engines were in those old ones.
Underpowered and small.
I call the -200s screamers, Canadian north use to operate a few, we’d see them flying out of yeg and yyc to the north a lot.
oh yeah the Classics
Amazing how fast the airline grew 👍🏼
And how fast its falling apart
I would like to see WestJet fly the 787-9s to Sydney to compete with Air Canada on that route.
Which one? Cape Breton or Australia?
YSSY Sydney Australia
It's possible, but I doubt we'll see it for quite some time. WestJet's summer schedule is very tight with over 7 transcontinental routes and only 7 Dreamliners - so they don't have a lot of room to add another long haul service at the moment. Sydney is also served from Vancouver with Air Canada, and with all of WestJet's long haul flights originating in Calgary, a Calgary to Sydney flight would be pushing the limits of a 787. Not that it isn't possible, just unlikely.
Westjet is a great airline. I love the warm and laid back attitude of the cabin crew.
As someone that Flys 30+ times a year on a westjet aircraft, glad to know they are doing well.
I have never flown Westjet, but I'd like to. As a Canadian, I'm proud of how fast that airline grew. I hope it expands from its Calgary hub to include Vancouver and Toronto as well, and possibly Montreal. May it continue to grow and prosper.
Vancouver and Toronto used to be hubs, Toronto was cut and Vancouver was shrunk from major operations after they put the focus on Calgary. Once they receive new planes, I bet Vancouver will come back with some major flights but since they are focusing on Western Canada I doubt that Toronto will ever become a hub again.
Great video 🤝
So it says in text on the video WS will operate 4 747 for their cargo but narrated that ir will be 737's. Which is it because I only heard 737's
Great
I Love flying with Westjet Airlines Boeing 737's I hope too fly with them soon Awesome Video!!!!
At 4:45 they say 737 BCF but the video shows 747.... I would love to see a Westjet 747 but I somehow don't think that's happening!
You didn't mention the B767s Westjet bought secondhand from Qantas. Then sold on to Amazon Air for cargo.
Note to self. Always watch the video to the end before commenting!
Hay good video love westjet but you didn't mention the 757s
They don’t have any 757’s
@@MaxwellAerialPhotography they had some from Thomas cook but they were retired in 2015 czcams.com/video/yIuU7GINMsE/video.html
@@MaxwellAerialPhotographythey did have 757s but they were leased
@@Crunchyalmondmilkthat still counts as westjet operating them
My carrier is decades old and I’m low key jealous a young carrier like West Jet has wide bodies
I know I’m late to this but in the video when talking about the 737-800BCF’s, the card in the video said 747-800BCF.
Can you do an Air Canada video ?
I flew in July 2023 on a WestJet 737 MAX8 on a return journey, my first on a MAX. I enjoyed flying on the aircraft, but one minor negative surprise was the lack of in-seat flight entertainment systems. Unfortunately, due to typical passenger noises during boarding, I couldn't hear the PA system and I didn't realize until after takeoff (and therefore cell phone flight mode) that an app was required to view content on personal devices. Given its ticketing price points being similar to Air Canada's, and with my flying on AC's A220-300's on my outbound journey, which had more robust in-seat flight entertainment systems, this was a minor disappointment to an otherwise satisfying flight.
I think they are now the largest. Swoop and sunwing
Next video on oman air please
such a good video
This video feels like a half story … it’s missing the recent 789 route cancellations from the east coast and the push back towards a more LCC approach once again
It’s simple flying lol
4:45 typo? 747-800bcf?
Westjet and Southwest airlines are the only 2 companies I will fly with. I don't trust Lynx, Flair, Spirit, Jetblue, Frontier etc
Ok
4:41 operates 4 747-800BCF ?
10:40 techniacally WestJet’s first trans-pacific route is Hawaii not Tokyo
All Boeing fleet .🔥🔥😍
Disappointing
@@wadehiggins1114 yea, for the anti-Boeing fangirl club.

Didn't Westjet operate Dash 8 Q400s?
They do but it’s there regnaol subsidiary encore
@@csgamer1904 Ah OK, thanks, was wondering why they weren't covered in the video.
And encore also runs 4 Saab 340s
@@csgamer1904isn't that westjet link?
@@Crunchyalmondmilk yes operated by Pasco
Your facts are a little twisted. WestJet was founded by David Neeleman and based off of the model of Morris air, which he cofounded with June Morris. Southwest acquired Morris Air tand as part of a noncompete clause, Neeleman move to Canada to found WestJet he has since founded a total of five separate airlines.
So are they not going to take delivery of the last 3 787-9’s?
I heard the last 3 are built and painted
One was delivered to Air Canada in the summer of 2023, the other two are likely to have the same fate as they already have Canadian registrations set aside for them.
Swoop has since been dissolved, its assets absorbed by Westjet
In all likelihood, WestJet will remain a Boeing only operator for some years to come, especially since all their new aircraft and fleet renewal are being done with Boeing aircraft.
I once flew on an old WestJet 767 from Barcelona to Toronto. I can't say that it was a great experience, but it wasn't terrible either. Perhaps the experience would be enhanced if it were on a Dreamliner.
Funny that Westjet started as a "low cost" and eventually became full cost airline, so had to launch "Swoop" as a low cost subsidiary. I guess eventually Swoop will become so expensive that will need to launch another low cost subsidiary
Swoop was created to compete with Flair, it’s Canada’s other Ultra low cost carrier.
@@grahamrothphotography there’s no such thing as ultra low cost carriers in Canada.
@@MaxwellAerialPhotography haha, compared to westjet and Air Canada I'd say Flair/Swoop/Lynx are. I flew to Toronto round trip for $158 and Van for $90 round trip last year with flair
Contrary to such belief, I was donning on Pearlstein vs. Scudder 429 2d 1136 (2d cir 1970) which, does not for some reason appear on these short. However, a 401 U.S. 1013 following 12(b) is possibly a bankruptcy statue in favor of the employee's & airlines-bona fide employees. Lisa
WeatJet just took over Sunwing
Westjet has cancelled all Europeon flights out of Toronto and i don't think they will be bringing them back.
They won't be, as Calgary, where they now have their focus, has a fair bit less Air Canada competition and is an undersaturated market so its a win-win for both AC and WS.
Continue loyal with Boeing
go Boeing!
Westjet is a shell of the company it once was. Pure nightmare to deal with now.
I think westjet should get a220s because they are made in Canada
No they have 737s
I think A220s would be a great replacement for their aging 737-700s that as of now have no certified replacement.
Bob who ?
In my opinion Wester is the best airline in the world
WestJet use to be great, now they’re falling behind Air Canada, and more about profit these days since Onex bought them.
I don't fly MAX.
Westjet: regular airline prices, budget airline service.
If I'm doing an all boeing fleet it will be 727s,747s, 757s and 777x, definitely not max and nightmareliners.
Go ahead , who is stopping you. ?🤷
I will nock semen 😂
Then your airline would fail because one the 727 is an old airframe needs three pilots and needs more fuel due to its three engines and two the 777x isn't even in service yet
In maintenance, we call them "Borderliners." But honestly, even with all the new tech teething problems, their low fuel consumption still compensates for the many repairs they require. Even the yearly overhauls of the GenX engines necessary on the 787-10 aren't really that much of a cost problem (right now the first stages of the high-pressure turbine burn up pretty quickly on the -10). Though it does require a lot of new parts and man hours. And to be fair, Boeing customer service is very good.
The 737NG has been fantastic in general, but the 737 MAX is a dog though. Glad the airline I work for chose the A320 and A321 Neo to replace the 737NG.
why do you have outdated planes in your fleet but only 1 new plane?
and not every single 737 is a max
What a terrible airline. People complains about Air Canada, but I think Westjet is a lot worse. I have used Westjet twice in my life, one time to UK London and another time to Cancun Mexico. Both flights were massively delayed making me late for one full day for both trips. No compensation for the expensive resort/hotel I booked in London and Cancun. No compensation for the local tours. I have to make drastic last minute change on my itinerary. It is time for Canada to let other airline in to compete. The Canadian air service is expensive and sub standard compared to anywhere else in the world.
You mean Air Canada, the government funded airline like CBC
Meanwhile I flew roundtrip to Heathrow in October 2022 on WestJet and it was on time both times. Can't come to a conclusion based on two flights.
Air Canada is better. Comment made by Air Canada and the Star Alliance fam
Wait Canada is actual country ? I thought it was a meme.
