I tend to use arbitration until they enter their final year of eligibility and then sign long term so I don't have to worry about FA

Save before arbitration.
Go through what you think is fair value for a players contract and proceed until you can get a sense of how it played out.
Then I’d either return to my save or tinker with the contracts again.

I wish you could see what the players filed at prior to the arbitration hearings. Teams know exactly what the players are filing at before the trials in real life.
