That sponsor ad was so smooth!
Great job, love the content.
I was at work and I had gotten tired of listening to nord commercials in the break room and finally cracked. I got Nord for 59:99 for the next year.
6:10 - FWIW, instead of _semelparous_ and _iteroparous,_ you start using something like _K-selected_ and _r-selected_ as the contrasting terms for the two types of species, without having them on the screen or enunciating them as you would a new term. This made it hard to hear the second set of terms as synonyms for the previous terms.
It was waaaay confusing (although not important to life in general) for the ear to hear that "our" species are the ones who are small and reproducing quickly. I then remembered a Wikipedia article I edited years ago by chance, rewound your video, and realized, "Oh wait, those ARE those weird terms that begin with letters!"
I'm not even sure if I've got the terms written right.... I think only one of them is capitalized so when Google dictation gambled on the K, I decided to leave it like that.
I'm a subscriber, bell ringer, and thumbs-upper of your content. Thanks for all of your distraction from the illness that made me retire from being a tech writer ages ago at age 30. Your content helps my mind get out of my body for a while, which helps immensely!
Hey man, can you tell us something about killer whales killing other whale cubs? I was kinda surprised at their brutality
I want a tiny pet octopus and I once did an AP English essay on the responsibilities of having one
Fun animal fact: The more excited a bee is about the location, the more rapidly it will waggle, so it will grab the attention of the observing bees, and try to convince them. If multiple bees are doing the waggle dance, it's a competition to convince the observing bees to follow their lead, and competing bees may even disrupt other bees' dances or fight each other off
Cool.
I posted the wrong one!!!! Lol sorry!

If octopi lived long enough to teach their offspring what they learned the hard way, they probably would have gotten to where we are technology at the very least, we all know how smart octopi are when they only have a year to learn everything from scratch, if they at least got the chance to learn from the parents, they could probably even surpass us with enough time
i have envisioned what is the consequence if human intervene and somehow deactivate the self destruct button for octopus and making it live longer atleast 50 year. what i can think of octopus can evolved to become human equivalence in the sea if they live longer than 3 year they exhibit intellegence and use of tool with enough knowledge that accumulate because the longer they live and being able to pass the knowledge to the next generation octopus will overrun ocean and can evolve to be able coomunicate with human because with tentacle they can use sign language that they will develop because the longer livespan

You do realise that's not the definition of jihad right.
Should be noted that, while humans are (very) K-selected, this exists on a spectrum and some are more K-selected than others. There are all sorts of traits in humans that are indicative of r-selection or K-selection, and certain things that happen to us while growing up not only affect which side of the spectrum we're on, but which side our _kids_ are on through a process known as epigenetics.

Fun fact:
when an octupus is having a mid-life crisis,
it eats it's arm from boredom
or panic
so that's why squidward has 6 arms
I find it funny that the kangaroo mouse that likes to “cook” is called a anti-kindness and a group of ravens is called a kindness.
"Life is pain no matter what you are” that last quote is true on so many levels.
this is the "Woah nature, you crazy" family guy gag come to glorious life. Keep the hits coming!
I always thought it was curious that male octopuses would try so hard not to be eaten by their mates (some of them try ripping their naughty-off while it's still inside the female to make a getaway). You'd think if they were going to die one way or another, it'd be better to go being useful by feeding your mate, and presumably your kids by proxy.
Also, I recently learned that one fish which is the opposite end of the spectrum to the salmon would be a coelacanth. They're only sexually mature at 55, meaning they don't hit puberty until after their midlife crisis (they apparently can live for 100 years, meaning that Pokémon was definitely on to something when they called relicanth the Longevity Pokémon). And once they're finally able to get pregnant, it takes them 5 years from conceiving to give birth, so they'll be having their first kids at the same age a human is old enough to be a grandma.
Coelacanths are pretty weird, they apparently barely have backbones, instead having just one long column of spinal disc jelly like modern-day jawless fish.
And that's just the beginning of what I recently picked up on fish evolution after enrolling for a vertebrate zoology course and falling down a fish-related research rabbit hole. The world of fish is quite bizarre for sure!
Good going mate.
And thanks for the sacred info
Very interesting info! I'll have to look them up, I've never heard of this. Thanks for the unique education!
It's been found that octopuses can feel fear and pain, and there's nothing more frightening or painful than being eaten alive. I imagine. I mean I wouldn't know firsthand obviously. I don't think there's anything with emotions and a functioning nervous system that won't generally try its hardest to avoid getting eaten (at least not that I know of).
That is really interesting about coelacanths though. I didn't know that.
I heard coelacanths were presumed extinct but a fisherman caught one and realized they’re still out there.
A similar thing happened with the black footed ferret, they were said to be extinct until one day a dog brought home a freshly dead one to its owner.
@@weird_art_kid
Plenty of animals have been presumed extinct but reappeared later.
What sets the coelacanth apart is that it was previously only known through the fossil record and presumed dead long before dinosaurs were a thing while most other resurrected species were one percented by humans.
I pride myself on my knowledge of random things but I swear, I didn't realize I know NOTHING about animals until this channel...I've learned so much, keep up the awesome job man!
Semelparous is simillar to Monocarpic in plants, like "century plants" such as talipot palms and agaves.
Annual plants produce mass flowering before dying..
Blue balled and red pilled too. Laughed so much that knocked my air out.

He's amazing, comedic gold
Being Claimed by post nut clarity sounds like ascending to another plain
Not such a bad way to go, at least for an octopus
There are some deep-sea cephalopods that live a while longer after mating (at least the mother) because being cold and under pressure slows everything down. It's fun to think how they might change if they didn't die after reproducing and could teach their children.
@@Eloraurora They would be well on their way to becoming the dominant species!
Well starving and dying from infection or being eaten up definitely doesn't seem like a good way to go, _just because of post nut clarity_

I’d love for you to talk about the grackle one of these days! It’s a type of bird native to the southern US and parts of Mexico iirc. Where I live, they come out during the spring and absolutely take over every single parking lot for a while.
I looked it up and it says the antechinas can live up to 3 years in captivity. Also the female doesn't tend to survive giving birth, so they both get screwed by.. well, getting screwed.
Males also sometimes do survive the mating season (though it is very rare for most Antechinus species). Not sure what you mean by females usually not surviving giving birth, if that were true then they'd have trouble maintaining their population as the babies need the mother to survive long enough to be weaned at least. Though it is true that a many female Antechinus (again, varying by species) don't survive long enough to give birth a second time.
@@Ryodraco perhaps they mean that female antechinas don't survive giving birth in captivity?
The antechinus is a cute little bastard that loves to bite. Fyi they're also a dasyurid, that means they have the dental formula of carnivores like cats and dogs, while being the size of a mouse.
