should have used the tacking method as used in sailing ships....you tack back to home in a zig zag line also altering you height up as well as down...everyone thinks lower is better but the wind can change hugely just a 100 feet higher up. Been flying DJI drones for 5 years and i use this method a lot....had my maiden mini 2 flight today and i had to use it just to get it back, works every time and I've never had to force land any drone and I've over 10k flights

MY MINI2 DID A FORCED LANDING INTO THE OCEAN WAVES YESTERDAY AFTER ONE MINUTE OF FLIGHT AND BEING 200 FEET AWAY. I lost it 2 weeks after purchase flying in the area I have flown over 20 times before. I sent my old min1 drone over the water, hoping to look for it but it started force Landing that one also!!! This time I was lucky to quickly back out and land barely on the edge of the sand. The second time I realized that it had flashed a quick message about flight zone!! If there was a problem with the zone authorization then, it should've not let me fly many times in the past or at least should've not let me fly to begin yesterday instead of crash Landing it so quickly! This was ridiculous. Battery was full it wasn't that far but it crashed into choppy waves. I had not bought the warranty on it because it's cinematic mode was jerky and fast like the Sport mode so I was not even sure I would keep this drone. I had installed the latest software and firmware after I bought it. I doubt the company will care to do anything. You can see one of my videos here czcams.com/video/UctHno31WXY/video.html

I flew the other day to look at a large crane on a development about 500m away from my house. I had to fly at 70m to avoid any potential RTH issues hitting the structure. When I got to the crane I noticed the drone attitude indicator advising the drone was almost at 45 deg so encountering significant wind but as such no warnings at this stage. I decided to play safe and RTH.
On the way back like you it got buffeted something chronic so I am glad I decided to play it safe when I saw the early indication of wind advised by the flight controls.
Well done DJI for providing this info to the pilot. Mini2 rule of Mike don't fly in winds over 10mph :-) if your going any distance.

Dropping altitude makes a huge difference in the wind speed, the higher you fly the stronger the wind will be, drop well below 30m and you should make better progress.👍

Lowering altitude to avoid high winds --yes that's the manned pilot and correct procedure (not to say this owner might have hit wind shear at a lower altitude but that's another story). The Dji Fly app even gives instruction during the "emergency" to drop altitude then fly manually RTH. This guy kept his alt at 63 - 70m the entire time so no surprise this was the outcome.

It has made me think twice and three times before flying in anything more than a breeze now tbh.

@@DMProductions luckily I did, it blew over the few houses where I live and once I got it down to around 10 metres high I had a little more control and landed by the next field, what I've learnt in that scenario is try and drop the altitude as fast and as safe as you can and try not too panic, fighting against the wind seemed to work a little because it seemed to slow the flyaway down a bit, keeping the drone in line of sight is a must at all times otherwise you're panicking and running around in circles trying to find the direction it's blowing away in. I'm sure all of will come across something like what you did in this video so peoe should put their experiences in the comments so we can all learn a little from it. Thats still good for mini 2
i allways taught to fly upwind on parameters as its you straped in at 1000ft and verry slow around 25 mph in slight winds
As if wind picks up you will turn around and get home
same for drones but you as rightly said wind cam switch around near cost and in mountains
A good tip is to look at the wind speeds for now but also in a few hrs if it looks like its all over switching on xc weather or other wind sites in next few hrs then dont fly far and get caught out having flown paramotors and rc aircraft and now drones for 20yr in total
i have a bit more understanding about weather conditions as most new pilots need to maybe know why flying allways upwind on normal days is safe bet
But its great to show how easy it can go all wrong and showing on this video wat you can do
Keep the info coming for everyone flying you are dooing a great job informing pilots of the good bad and ugly thankyou barnsley john

Getting it to fly that far and back, is NOT the point. All drones, whether you are a qualified pro or a beg8nner, must be flown within visual line of sight, end of. The transmission range of 10km for the Mini 2, is NOT a target for other s to reach, it is confirmation that the signal is more than sufficient for the every day drone pilot.
Posting videos like this, is only encouraging others to try it, making it harder for the majority of us, to get drones a good reputation, rather than the one they have right now.
By the way, you can in theory, get permission to fly beyond line of sight, but I guarantee no drone pilot on you tube has ever applied for one.
Flying out over the ocean for miles, losing it as it is forced to land, before it returns. Flying in ridiculously high winds, NO DRONE, was built to take, is an idiots game, no serious drone pilot would risk.
If these people want to risk flying beyond line of sight, that's their choice, but posting it on CZcams, is a whole different ball game. It's illegal and CZcams is only encouraging illegal behaviour, by allowing such videos to be posted.
Sorry but anyone, who owns a drone and thinks this kind of behaviour is ok, should have their drone taken from them, as they obviously have no clue and are a danger not only to themselves but everyone in the vicinity.
