I so agree that reading a variety of supplementary material can add to the reading experience, not just “explain” what is going on in the plot. Knowing more about the history and allusions, etc., just adds to the pleasure!

Then I reached the part about the toxic disturbance that haunted your reading and I can understand that very well. I still fret about events occuring in my former school district. Pat - I enjoyed your tag Tuesday - which was full of beautiful, touching anecdotes. Offering even more depth to the previous sharing of your reading. The letters written to your father were especially moving. I still engage in conversation with my parents inside my thoughts. Each phase of life is such an adjustment. I was sad, and a bit lonely, on the first day of school, when Teachers were returning to their places at school for inservice and planning. Experiencing and realising for the first time, that I would not be participating. My place, after so many years, had been filled by someone else. Where does this knowledge and experience that I have acquired go now? I pondered that for quite some time. It was a strange experience. But I relished my freedom when reports were to be written, evaluations were due and long conferences were to be scheduled. No longer required to participate in those long, unproductive meetings, I was expected to attend. It was a period of adjustment! We long to belong, to connect, to engage and to contribute still!
I am currently reading - How to Read a Book by Monica Wood - in which their is a poignant quote - “I am a reader. I am intelligent. I have something worthy to contribute.”
I thought of you, and many of us, who find ourselves in a new phase of life - when you discussed the madness of the meta universe! The human mind and longing for meaningful connection is no match to an AI generated algorithm.
Happy reading Pat! PS: North Woods is completely riveting!

Pat, wonderful to meet you, and thank you for doing this tag!
Your clear, calm demeanor reminds me so much of my favorite teachers in the past. Like having someone whom you know will understand and be patient, whose wisdom resides in not just concepts but emotion.
Have you seen public performances of Ulysses before? I recently attended a reading of sections of Ulysses (with accompanying music) at the Hammer Museum for Bloomsday, and it brought to life much of the cadence, humor, and compassion of the text. It is a work that never ceases its impressions and means of knowing. A third-time read on your part is hugely impressive!
Your ongoing dialogue with your father sounds wonderful. Thank you for sharing that.

Hi Ruben! It’s lovely to meet you too! As soon as I saw Steve Donoghue do this tag, I knew it was one that I needed to do too. I’ve tagged quite a few people, and I’ve already seen several more people posting videos. Really thoughtful videos. Thank you for this lovely comment. You’ve made my whole evening!
I did see a live reading of parts of Ulysses long ago, but never the whole thing. Still, it was very moving. Don’t be too impressed by my third reading of Ulysses! I think I really struggle with it as an undergraduate on my first read. My second reading, in graduate school, was an extraordinarily powerful experience. I was actually dreaming about the book that time! But I’m coming back to it this third time, many years later, and in some ways, it really does feel new (newish) to me.
Thank you again for this lovely response. I will look forward to getting to know you better!

I don't listen to audio books, but in future if my mind is too clouded to allow me to read this sounds like an effective way to clear it up. I too wake up early to read. Concentration best in the mornings. I've never understood people who read in bed, at the beach, or in a "comfy" chair. Never could do it. I need a chair with armrests. Hello Pat, what a wonderful video from beginning to end. I loved your answers so much. I started annotating when I began college at age 38, so I always associate notetaking with school. However, lately, I found I need notes to really appreciate the unfamiliar reading that I’ve been doing since joining the community.
This will be my fourth year as a creator on book tube and I remember overdoing it the first year. It’s natural to want to join all the events and buddy reads. You will find your own pace with time.
I am a nonfiction writer, so for me writing is part of my DNA. I’ve always kept a diary, not of books, but of life and poetry since I was a little girl.
I never thought I would annotate if I didn’t have to, but I also find that I get so much more out of reading when I write things down. I don’t look at the CZcams studio because I don’t want to get depressed 😊
Hope you don’t mind my long comments because I’m known for them . i’ve recently started a gratitude journal and I know I’m grateful that you started a channel. Even though I’m older than you, you are a mentor for me. I don’t know if I told anyone this, but I was forced out of my senior year of high school because I got married. A beautiful video. It was very moving about the letters you wrote. Reading is connection. I have heard when people retire from a beloved role, it can be likened to a loss. I too also had one very bad period where I could not read. My main comfort of reading was lost to me and I was paralysed by grief, unable to read. So glad you started this channel. I didn’t talk about it in mine , but I also feel like I read less in retirement because I have all the time in the world and reading can be easily put off for a few minutes which turn into hours.

Well, it was only when I first retired because I was still so tied to the people and to the terrible things that were happening in the district. Once I got out of that head space, though, my ability to focus on my reading came back. Now, I’m reading more than ever. But it took a while to get here. Book tube has helped tremendously in that regard. I’ll look forward to your responses, Greg! 😊

  • @ellenmadebookclub

I was completely spellbound through this entire video, thank you for sharing that Pat. The letters to and from your father brought tears to my eyes. And even though I haven’t retired, I have had some very consuming and problematic work environments that have taken over my whole being, so I can relate to the difficulty of letting that go after leaving. It’s really hard, especially when you care a lot, as i know you do.
As for your poetry, the numbers are not important, the feedback that you get from people is. I don’t always watch the poetry videos, I don’t always feel like I have the capacity to take it in. Sometimes I do, and then I’m really happy you’re doing them, because I would never watch or read anything about poetry if you didn’t. And I see the comments from people loving your readings. There are also always those who watch but don’t comment, and they might be having an even more profound experience. Just like Angelia, Michael and Steve didn’t know how they would be helping you, you don’t know who is benefitting from your videos. So do it for the silent kid at the back of the class who never seems to care, because it might be the highlight of their day. And, of course, do it for you. I see the light in your eyes when you’re reading something you connect to, and that is what its all about.
I love this video so much. I don’t know if I will do the tag, I couldn’t think about my own answers while listening to yours, but if I do I will let you know. 😊

Thank you for sharing, Pat! ☮️🩵📚
    P.S.
I know you follow, and enjoy dozens of channels, but I am so glad to hear you found “Heidi” from “My Reading Life”, she and “Doris” from “All D Books” are a couple of my long time faves…along with many of those you mentioned, (and Steve, of course, the reading guru for most of us.) 😊
    Take care, Pat!
    Abrazos! (Hugs) 🌸
