  • I discuss the recent challenge in a county in Florida to Alan Gratz's middle grade book, BAN THIS BOOK. The challenge resulted in the Board of Education voting 3-2 to remove the novel from its elementary and middle school libraries. Although the challenger claimed that there was sexual. content in the book, there is, in fact, no sexual content anywhere in the book. The book had previously been vetted and approved twice by a committee of school officials and parents, first when it was purchased and second, when it was challenged by a parent. This committee voted to include the book in the district's elementary and middle school libraries. A Board of Education of five members, voting 3 to 2, removed the book from all school libraries.

Hello Pat, What’s happening in Florida is absurd! The parents who object to the banning of these books should be required to write a book report and be graded on each book they want to ban. The grading should include grammar, logic and civics. Great video an important topic. Aloha friend.

If something like this was on a TV show, it would be so absurd as to be unbelievable. The fact that it occurred is very scary. I love how groups like Moms for Liberty name themselves in a total opposite way to their actions. I live in Connecticut. Arguably the most liberal state in the US. Makes me think of set theory in maths... if all the empty sets are in a set. It is a complicated business banning books. Obviously we can all decide to ban a book from ourselves by simply not reading it. So, banning books is really one person not letting someone else read a book. Interesting and complex topic, particularly when it involves the young and when political parties choose a position.

SO many thoughts on this! The irony of banning this book. It sounds a really great book, such a great idea. I love middle grade books, although we tend to just call them "children's books" here. A great read is a great read, whatever form. I honestly don't understand the whole banning culture. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think we have it here. Historically the odd book that has been deemed offensive has been banned, of course. Also banning of Anne Frank's Dairy of a Young Girl upsets me. It's such an important book. Great video, yet again.

I think you are right, Helen, that this is a strangely American phenomenon at this time. It's only happening pervasively in some states, but where it is happening, I think it is having a devastating effect. There is NOTHING that could be deemed offensive in this book. It's about a little girl who learns to stand up for a cause, and she gains a voice in the process. The challenger claimed it had inappropriate sexual content. It does not. It has no sexual content it whatsoever. The author dedicates this book to librarians everywhere. In some of the places where this kind of challenging and banning is taking place, librarians are being pursued and attacked relentlessly. It's beyond disturbing....Thanks, as always, for watching and for commenting.
