Leave your dust collector in the attic, drop a line down to a cyclone and never have to go up to the attic again, you'll just have e to empty the seperator collector bin in your shop. Solves all your issues and keeps your dust collector nice and quiet upstairs

And your attic gets insulated in the process as well!!! LOL It's PERFECT! HAHAHA I've been pleasantly surprised at how infrequently I have to empty the bag. I am up there maybe 3 times per year and the process of emptying it is actually not that big of a pain in the ace either.

@@ButlerBuiltWoodworking I have a 3hp laguna, I built a closet around it and put a cyclone seperator at each machine, cnc 16"jointer, planer. Bandsaw, im in a production setting so slightly different, when you run a 1000 board feet of white oak two dumpsters fill up quite quickly and emptying that tiny drum on my dustcollector got old real quick. Biggest benefit is keeping the filter clean as very little dust makes it to the collector, hence airflow stays strong and cleaning that is the biggest pain.

I have seen a CNC bit stop in the material because of a G code error. This caused the bit to burn the material, therefore, creating embers. These embers were sucked into the dust collector. The dust collector then caught fire. The reason the bags are clear is so you can see smoldering embers. Please be careful because having the machine in your house voids insurance and having a burning bag in the ceiling will be hard to remove.

Does the dust collector suck heated air from the shop to the cold attic? I live in a cold state and hate to suck my heated air out of my shop. Any ideas?

I can’t deny it certainly does pull warm air out of the shop pretty quickly! That being said though I recently insulted the attic/ceiling joists above the drywall and the benefits were two fold:
1.) the shop space takes much less heat to warm up and therefore unless I am running a very long carve or other operation on any other tools connected to the DC I have experienced a much less significant temp swing and the recovery time has been cut in at least half!
      And
2.) The added sound dampening is AMAZING! 😍 it’s honestly kinda eerie sucking up dust and cleaning the shop when you literally can’t even hear the dust collected turn on let alone hear the droning sound of the motor as it runs 😂
It gets chilly here in Boise, ID but I wouldn’t necessarily consider it to be a harsh winter climate (we’ll have 7-10 days in the teens to 20’s freedomheight but generally speaking we’re more frequently closer to 40 degrees so once the shop warms up and I get the 8” cement block walls warm the chill has a hard time setting back in with any significance or speed

Doh! Hit send a bit prematurely there 😂🤦🏻‍♂️😆 I meant to close that comment with a final thought and that is that if you have a small shop (as you can see mine is a one car garage measuring 15x20’ with just a 7’ high ceiling space is so precious that in my mind losing some heat temporarily every once in a while is an incredibly small price to pay! I would say I’m more concerned with losing cool air in the summer than heat but we’ll top out at 110 degrees of dry heat in the summer and we’ll go 3-4 months per year where the only forecast you need to see is the first warm dry day of the year and you can be sure the next 90-100 days will be between 90 and 115 degrees with barely a cloud in sight and rain showers being rarer than my hand cut dovetails fitting together cleanly 😂
The attic may not be the “ideal” place to put it but I’d have mine outside the shop regardless of the size of the shop from now on and I believe you’d have the same issues mentioned above regardless of whether you stuck it in the attic or beside the shop outside the walls.

Are there any potential risks placing your dust collection in the attic?
